Heldt for SOTG.

This shitty Nova game gonna go late too.

A fast paced game so far.
Cheatam just dumb
Haase looks twice as big as Heldt
Nice move Theo
Chat room is up
Has a freshman ever not been called for a foul when setting a screen at the top of the key?
Nojel Eastern with the turnover the first time he touched the ball, no surprise there 8-)
Ugly game.
Gotta figure out how to score in the lane against these 7 footers. Might need to bust out the floaters.
Heldt is really killing our offense. He's not a threat as a pick and pop or as a roll man. All he can do is catch a wide open dump off (maybe). He needs to either take and make 12-15 footers, or find a nice spot on the bench. Purdue doubles every screen.
If that's the calls Haas is gonna be getting...
Somebody teach Heldt the flop during his next time on the bench
Zone now

You were saying?
Pending a replay that looked more like a karate chop
I'm pleased we have been making some stops....
Haas is basically an extra large Luke Fischer.
As I figured most here overrated Purdue.
Just not sure we can score over their big uncoordinated fu ckers
Never teach the flop
Haanif should probably stop driving right into traffic
The defensive effort is there. Hard to complain. Purdue's size is disrupting MU's offense. No clean looks. Ah, well. As long as MU keeps working on defense.
Did the scouting report to Cheatum mention there is always a 7 footer on the court every time he drives?
Block party
Heldt playing like a clown
HC is exactly the same player.
I like Haanif's effort so far. Size matters. Length matters. Going to get a look at small ball now. Not optimistic.
Better stop the bleeding soon or this could get away in a hurry.

I personally never questioned his effort.
We can't compete with this size. Our only shot is to trade 3's for their 2's. Ugly D on that Edwards drive
I know we wanted Markus to take more shots this year, but his shot selection is leaving a lot to be desired.
Hey Wojo...theres this thing called zone defense..ever heard of it? You cannot guard them man to man..CHANGE IT THE F up!
Zone doesn't tend to do that well against a good 3 point shooting team like Purdue.
Purdue is longer and thicker at every position. There are no open shots. MU's only hope is to make it rain. MU's defense looks worlds better than last year. Not enough so far.
This is ugly.
I like the energy that Elliot is bringing.
Quote from: Herman Cain on November 14, 2017, 08:29:06 PM

Yup. So far so good.
MU can't compete going against quality centers like this, when the only thing your starter (Heldt) does is set picks at foul line and your backup (John) commits a foul a minute. Watch Heldt on offense when he returns, thats all he does and no one throws a pass to him.
Plus shooting like 20% doesn't help either. Maybe some threes start going in, keep it close till half and then more threes in second.
Hey, nice run now as Hauser playing center. Nice......
I'm liking GE
All of this kvetching, all of the bad shooting, all of the physical dominance by Purdue and their size and here we are. 2 pt game at the half. Defensive intensity is world's ahead of last year. Hauser rocks.
Uhhh that was a goaltend
Students look like they are into the game.

Defense seems fine. Nice to see against a decent opponent too
Night and freaking day difference on D. Way more discipline and energy
Was about to say, I thought the defense was pretty decent. People are never satisfied.
Rowsey smh
Purdue isn't very good. Unfavorable match up for us so we probably lose without consistent offense. More experienced Theo and Frolling would help.
But not worried about them in the BIG10 as a side gopher supporter.
We got this
Sam at the 5 helped turn the game
I am looking forward to seeing Froling mixed in with this bunch.
Theo's 3rd hurts. He's a player for sure. No fear as a freshman.

I don't know that Sam would have been as effective against Haas as he was against Haarms. Haas would have just backed down, turned and shot over Sam just as easily as he did over Matt. Goaltend on that last play.

Umm what game u watching? Best defense MU has played in 4 years right there!!
Nice defensive effort, especially given the inability to score until the final 3 minutes. Plan may be to up the pressure to spark the offense, which might also help stop the points they were getting by just shooting over our guys inside.

Theo with 3 PF, Heldt with 2 and ineffective defense--we may find out in the 2H if Sam can defend Haas
Cheatham had three shots blocked on drives, all left handed. Just like last year in BE games. If keeps it up, more Sacar and Elliott.
Theo is a big guy, but lets hope he can stay on the floor, he will be needed.
Additionally we should hit heldt at least a couple times on his rolls. He is pretty adept ar finishing on the roll. Key tonthe first half was we went at Haas 2 times nnhe fouled both times. Hit heldt a few times on the roll and go at Haas. Offensively haas is absolutely huge and can finish need to tey to front him n apply ball pressure to deny the penetration pass. Best way to stop a post presence is heavy ball pressure

Make Haas move his feet and he sucks.
That little bump he has on Markus for his first foul amateur.
Gotta make him move and get him out of game
Didn't see the St. Mary's game. Theo looks like he will be a beast when he gets a little more experience. GE looks like he will be fun to watch about 30 pounds from now. I worry about Hannif. Warriors shoot a little better in the second half and I like our chances. Stating the obvious but MU could use Frolling, soon right..... Go Warriors.

I do not understand the Haanif criticism. The offense is bogging down, he takes it aggressively to the rim and gets swatted by a 7'3 guy and some see this as proof that he hasn't gotten better ?!?! 7'3! I want Haanif taking that opportunity every damned time! They aren't all going to be 7'2 and 7'3.

Heldt getting absolutely dominated by Haas every time he touches ball. Not sure why we aren't doubling on him, or at least fronting him.
Too much dribbling on offense.
Wojo is the least creative coach I have ever seen. Is he a moron? It was obvious in the 1st half Heldt couldnt guard Haas 1 on 1..so his halftime adjustment is....wait for it..to do EXACTLY the same thing. Brilliant freaking coaching right there Wojo.

Exactly.
Zone won't solve the problem. Doubling is the only hope. Heldt is a waste, might as well play someone who won't bring the offense down. He'll be much more playable against non-aliens.
Sacar looks OK, but it was clear on his 3 that he doesn't have confidence in that range. Elliot and HC need all the minutes there.
Heldt is overmatched. It won't be the last time. Thankfully, there aren't that many 7'2 widebodies out there to make Matt look puny. Froling will be an extra 5 fouls on defense.

Probably as bad as that double team
We fronted Haas the entire first half. We were only down 2 at half despite our offense being atrocious. We shot what? 31% in the first half? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Doubling Haas was disastrous. Going to zone would have been worse. Fronting with Hauser seemed to have decent success. If we had the offense going in the first half, we would have had a double digit halftime lead.
Zone against an elite 3 point shooting team with our lack of length? They would have killed us. Our man to man and allowing just 2 pointers is what kept us close. Having to double in second half killed us, think Wojo did it trying to prevent Heldt and Theo fron fouling out. Did not get it to work. Heldt is who he is, backup center, that is why Wojo got Theo, Morrow and Froling. Howard has to be smarter than fouling out the way he did too much of a valuable weapon to go out like that. Sam had to expended too much energy on D. Wojo was not bad, he switched defenses, did a goid job subbing and we had some really good open looks that didn't fall in first half.

Agree 100%. I thought we played well against a really good team who will most likely win the Big Ten. It was a humbling but learning experience for our young players.
The key word is "young." We are very talented and will get better as the season progresses. We will win 20+ games this year, but, will sustain a few bumps and bruises along the way.

Color me unconvinced. Purdue's 8 turnovers and the 2 blocks (Elliott, Rowsey) that looked more like steals were the only reason we were close.
If I'm calculating correctly, Purdue shot 51.7 eFG% yesterday in the first half. There's not much correlation between turnovers and defensive efficiency, so while it worked for us yesterday in the first, I'm not at all convinced that will be a sustainable plan in the long term.
Now 51.7 is better than the 52.2 we allowed for the season last year (still below average), but not by much. And obviously, the 70.4 we allowed in the second was disastrous. And much of that first half was with Haas and Edwards sidelined with foul trouble.
I think at this point, the jury on the defense is at best still out.

I'm an optimist. But I'm with you on this one. I find nothing encouraging about giving up 86 points (including 54 in the second half) and losing by 15 at home. Just the opposite — I find it extremely concerning. That's putting it mildly. Last season, only one team (Georgetown) defeated us by 15+ at home.
That doesn't mean we can't or won't get better. I simply haven't seen any evidence on the court yet.

Actually, the loss to G-Town was at their place.

And it wasn't our only 15+ point loss of the season, we also lost to Michigan on a neutral court by 18.
Our last home losses by 15+ were Seton Hall (20 points in December 2015) and Iowa (28 in November 2015).

My mistake. Not sure how I got that mixed up, but thanks for the correction. Even worse.

They will not win the Big 10.
Time will tell. I believe Purdue is the best team in the Big Ten.
