Bucky was BEAT DOWN by tOSU tonight. Lost by 10 but the game was far from being that close.
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game?gameId=400914945
(tOSU scored 83, one off the most points Bucky allowed this year ... that would be 84 by MU in December)
Bucky is 1 - 3 in their last 4 and are now 1 game behind Purdue in the B1G. Bucky has led the B1G everyday this season until tonight.
Choking down the stretch.
Bucky also should have lost 2 other games right before they're stretch. In one game, they were down 7 in the last minute, and the other team couldn't make a FT. In another, they had an equally crazy comeback.
There goes Milwaukee as their tournament site, most likely. Won't get their own Pod.

The rodents played well early in the year, especially against Marquette. Now their play is awful. What ever happen to Hayes, the self proclaimed best player on their team? He looks like he should find another line of work. He stands around flat footed, doesn't jump or run and is a poor shooter.
Stop getting my hopes up for a one and done for the Badgers, people.
You know what's gonna happen. There'll be a "team meeting" and the team will suddenly play way better, get on a winning streak and be the talk of the NCAAs as they unexpectedly beat a bunch of teams. >:(

If they can hold onto the 5 seed, I actually like them to go down to one of the top MM in the first round 5/12 matchup - Middle Tennessee, UNC-W, Akron, Nevada, Texas Arlington, Monmouth - one of those.

A little surprising since they were a 5 seed at best with the Top-16. That was before starting their slide, unless the Maryland win separates them from the 6 seed pack.
As someone who hasn't bought tickets yet, but plans to, I'm rooting hard against Bucky in Milwaukee.

The NCAA is all about selling tickets. If there is ANY chance in hell of UW playing in Milwaukee, the NCAA will make it happen. Fannies in the seats are much more important than punishing North Carolina for 30 years of blatant academic fraud.
Starters are playing a ton of minutes and they get on offensive droughts because of a lack of shooting. 4 of their top five in minutes are also seniors.

While true, I don't think the NCAA will want to penalize a highly ranked opponent forcing a road game on them. I would be pissed as hell if that were my school.
Question. Is Butler allowed to play in Indy as that is not its home gym?

He's fallen back into old habits from last year. He looked like he found himself earlier this season, but he's slipped back into doing too much.
To be fair, no one except Hayes thinks he's the best player on that team. Happ is a bad man.
I'm kind of curious about the how Gard is viewed in Badger land. He brought that team back last year, but they were talented and Bo was checked out. They lose a lot of players and it seems like they've been lost any time Koenig has been out or not played well.
His recruiting seems to be pretty good, and they seem to always have guys step up. Just will be interesting to see how they finish the year.

Agree. Not getting my hopes up.
There are some truths we should hold to be self-evident at this time of the year.
Michigan State, having been left for dead because of a non-con schedule that included four NBA teams, will get in.
Syracuse, having been left for dead because the old man has finally lost it, will get in.
Bucky, having been left for dead because nobody can shoot in February, finds its stroke just in time to reach the second weekend in March.
What else?
They'll be fine. Trice and Iverson will be nice pieces with Happ next year, and Kobe King is really good.
What will determine how they do is how guys like Illikanen, Pritzl, Thomas progress.

My Badger friends are cautiously optimistic. Part of their problem is that the recruiting coming off the Final Fours wasn't as good as it should have been. They are going to need to have some people step up an fill roles that they haven't been used to filling. So I think Gard will show how he can develop players through next season.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why they never offered Sam Hauser a scholarship. His shooting is exactly what that UW team needs right now. From what I understand, the only reason we got him was because of this mistake. And it could cost them his brother too.

I believe Butler could play in Indy. Remember a few years ago Villanova cut back on the number of games they played at Wells Fargo so they could play there in the tournament if they were in that region. I think that was a regional site and not the first 2 rounds but don't think makes any difference.

now 1 - 4 in the last 5.
If they choke their game against Iowa at home this week, they are at serious risk of winding up in 5th place in the B1G
From January 1st until last Wednesday, Bucky led the B1G. And in the space of 6 days they can go from 1st to 5th with an Iowa loss.
Can you say "8 seed" meaning they get the 1 seed in the next round of the Tourney (assuming they beat their 9 seed first).
If FTs are about confidence, then Nigel Hayes is hopelessly lost ... he was 4 for 12 in FTs today!
Revel in their pain. Koenig does not look like he is recovered from his calf strain. Sparty was able to guard Happ without doubling. When a team has size on the wings to contest Brown and Hayes, can guard Happ without doubling, and have quicker guards than Bucky......
They've looked pretty bad for awhile. Whoever gets matched up with them in the tourney has got to feel pretty good.

Both brothers who played for UW celebrating wildly with the IOWA bench.
Hayes went all hero ball attempting to one-hand it right off the rim, with no box out, and it harmlessly sailed right over his head and landed in the exact spot he vacated. His ill-timed jump was completely unnecessary. To make things worse, he didn't recognize Bohanon spotting up behind the arch and closed way too late. Hayes spends all his time coasting, whining and standing over his opponent on every dead ball.
A complete disaster of a senior senior season, and true cancer to the team.
If Gard had Wojo's ba11s, he'd sit him on the old hardwood for a spell! He doesn't.

Difference between UW and Xavier.
Xavier had a small margin with good players.
They lost Davis, Sumner, Bluiett (who needs time to get back in form).
Macura is good but not a star type and not ready to be the leader.
So they imploded for lack of talent.
But UW has their people...just not playing like winners anymore.
Lessons for MU...need to keep depth...don't depend on just 6 guys (we don't and that's good). Need to have even intensity all year to be successful.

Had my brother played for UW, we would no longer be speaking.
Ethan Happ needs to really think about his future. He is ALL UW has next year. Having no shot outside of 2 feet will really limit his NBA aspirations, so he might want to consider another school. The UW train is at the end of the line.

I hope so, but I feel like this has been said about UW many times. Yet every year, some benchwarmer who looked like a wasted scholarship the year before ends up becoming a stud. Bo had that magic. Does Gard, his hand picked successor have the same ability? We will find out next season.

Different coach, different times. Gard won't have Bo's magic. I'd be willing to bet Gard won't be coach in 3 years. His fanny will be getting toasty in two weeks if his team decides to mail it in, in their first round game.

Back-to-back national championship games with no title.

DAMN! Bocephys beat me to it
LOVE THAT
I would definite sit Hayes on the bench. He hurts the rodents with is careless play. Besides he can't shoot, can't jump and doesn't run.
I think the train has left Madison and fans will only have football to root for in the next few years. Their basketball program is trending downhill and the only saving grace is that the entire Big Ten also stinks.

I hope so, but I feel like this has been said about UW many times. Yet every year, some benchwarmer who looked like a wasted scholarship the year before ends up becoming a stud. Bo had that magic. Does Gard, his hand picked successor have the same ability? We will find out next season.
Also, I think it's interesting that we are Bucky's 2nd or 3rd best win this season behind @Minnesota and possibly Maryland at home.
Badgers have 17 players listed on the roster. To your point above, it will be interesting to see who emerges for them next season.
This is where I am an Aristotelian. On the one side we have people posting here saying the Badgers can just get a new coach and they still dominate basketball and another group says the Badgers will not be going to the tourney for the foreseeable future.
My guess is the reality lies somewhere in between. Those who think that losing Bo Ryan, one of the great basketball minds, will have little impact on the program were underestimating him. And those who think without him they are done are underestimating the Badgers program. After all, Wisconsin has a TOP TEN athletic budget.
I do believe though the Elite Eights and Final Fours are going to a distant memory. Though they still will be factor in the Big Ten and the country.

I can agree with that! They won't be bottom feeders, but the days of Final 4s & Big Ten Champs are OVER. People are already grumbling about Gard. The next few yrs will be fun.
Hayes has really amazed me in a negative way. Watching him as a freshman, he looked like a future stud. When he added the three as a sophomore, he looked terrifying. I thought he'd be the next Badger beast that went from unheralded to All American.
Oh what a difference a few years makes. He has completely failed to continue his growth and become the player he looked like he could be. Not sure there's anyone that much better coming behind him, either. At least after Happ, that is.
ND sucks

A decent string of success over the last couple decades.
Back-to-back national championship games with no title.
A big-name coach who catches everyone off-guard by jumping ship.
Teams that are in the top 10 one week and out of the rankings a couple weeks later.
Insufferable fans with short memories who think their program is the greatest ever.
Congratulations, Bucky. You're the new Butler.
Bucky played in back to back title games?
Bucky Sucky!!!!
Question now is if we close out the season with two or more additional wins, go strong into the NCAAs.
All the while the Rodent continues his mediocre ways, losing to Minnesota and winning none or one game in the BIG tournament.
Who gets the higher seed??????

He bought into his own hype and thought UW needed him more than he needed UW. Complacency and entitlement will take great promise and turn it into hot garbage, like Hayes.

Bucky is 22 - 7 and we are 18 - 11.
For us to get a higher seed, we have to win 23 games (which means win Creighton and win the BET). Or, Bucky has to lose 11 games .. which is not possible because the most they can lose from here is two.
So, if we win the BET then, yes we could get a higher seed. Short of that, no.
MU currently picked as a #9 seed in the South playing #8 Michigan State. I couldn't copy the USA Today bracket.

USA TODAY Sports Bracketology: Wisconsin is the most vulnerable team this March
The Wisconsin Badgers are imploding.
Big time.
Losers of five consecutive games to unranked opponents, the Big Ten's best team — once upon a time — is no more. In the same way Minnesota, on an eight game winning-streak, is trending upward, Wisconsin's trajectory this March is as down as it gets. Ironically, the Badgers close out the regular season with a matchup against perhaps the hottest team in the country in the Gophers.
Thursday night's disastrous loss to Iowa, which saw Wisconsin yield a 12-1 run and the Hawkeyes hit a game-winning three-pointer, was just the latest head-scratcher with this team. Meanwhile, Iowa has surged to be the first team out on the latest bracket.
The question of whether the Badgers get their groove back has been a theme for a while now and that story line will undoubtedly elevate in the Big Ten tournament, where Wisconsin won't be the top seed since Purdue trudged ahead to claim the Big Ten regular season title outright.
Whether riddled with injuries, namely to point guard Bronson Koenig, or facing a late-season identity crisis, the Badgers — now a No. 8 seed in USA TODAY Sports' bracketology — are the team most opponents would be happy to draw on Selection Sunday. That wouldn't have seemed the case earlier in the season, considering Koenig and Nigel Hayes provide the Greg Gard-led Badgers with more postseason experience than most teams.
Wisconsin's struggles are both helping and hurting the Big Ten, which the selection committee made clear it's not impressed with via its top 16 seeds preview a few weeks back. Bubble teams like Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State and now Iowa have used wins against the Badgers to add to their marquee win compartment of their résumé. While it's inched most of them off the bubble, the win won't be holding as much weight anymore on Selection Sunday.

Koenig might be trying to pump up his NBA chances. 19 pts 0 ast against Iowa. I don't analyze the Badgers to much but this is common in Badger losses. You go Koenig. Score high.

Yes, it is not true in the strictest sense. I was answering the question about us getting a higher seed than Bucky. I was arguing that we would have to win the BET (and Bucky fold quickly in the B1GT) in order to get a better seed. I was pointing out the different records as an example of why it would take us winning the BET.
Was at the game Sunday, Koenig went off in the second half and the game wasn't even close at the end. Hayes, Happ, and Iverson are still struggling making free throws.

Well the Cubs were down 3-1 and came back to win it all and back in '77 we choked at the end of the season as well only to come back to win the NC. I wouldn't get too giddy over this poor stretch of games. Strange things happen in sports all the time.

You know what's gonna happen. There'll be a "team meeting" and the team will suddenly play way better, get on a winning streak and be the talk of the NCAAs as they unexpectedly beat a bunch of teams. >:(
Prophetic.

There ya go
I've said all year that UW was a contender for the Final Four (as others here have bashed them).
Koenig and Hayes have led this team to at least the Sweet 16 all four years at UW. An 8th seed (Minnesota was a 5 seed) was ridiculous.

They start four seniors, this is their last run for a few years.
Koenig, Hayes, Brown, and Showalter are all starters
Combined:
Minutes 113 (56% of the 200 minutes per game)
Points 43.2 (59% of the 73/game they average)
Rebounds 13.4 (36% of the 37 per game they average)
So I'm calling it now, their NCAA streak ends this year.
Yes they have Happ returning. They can only go so far with Happ and a bunch of question marks, including Trice and Iverson.
See MU last year, could not make the tourney (or the NIT) with first rounder Ellenson and a bunch of question marks. See LSU last year, they could not make the tourney with No.1 pick Simmons and a bunch of question marks.

Lotta game left. Respect the process. I'd take their "choking down the stretch" every year. A conference tourney finals appearance and a S16 (maybe more?) is, in no way, choking down the stretch.

Yep, and here's what we in the newspaper biz used to call Smuggles' "nut graf":
I'm having a hard time believing next year's team is better than last year's team. And last year's team could not make the NIT with a lottery pick.Later in the thread, Smuggles actually did what he almost never does ... ate crow.
It's nasty when people use one's own statements against them. Much easier when one employs one's own alternative facts. Like his idol now pretending to be president, Smuggles does this often.

The original point of the post above was Wally was forced off the team. Everyone here said it was to make a spot of some wonderful transfer coming in. I was fine with all of this.
Then Kalif Young went tp Providence and we wound up with nothing but an empty chair. My comment above was this is how a 8 - 10 team stays 8 - 10. When you aren't putting in the work that the rest of the team is required to put in, I have no problem with the coach deciding your scholarship is no longer there for you. Said it at the time, holds true still.
