As predicted the Marquette basketball fan base has dried up with a watered down conference and a big miss on the coaching hire. It's sad to see no more sell outs even when playing teams like Wisconsin or #1 Villanova on Saturday afternoon games.
The Wojo honeymoon is over and the word is out among recruits and rival coaches alike that he can't coach or even get teams with highly rated recruits into the NCAA tournament. So don't expect any more exciting recruiting classes. Yes we'll see a Hauser type here and there but that won't even get us in the NIT with his coaching (maybe with Bo Ryan or Bobby Knight we could but Wojo isn't close to them).
Marquette as a university has no clue either in that they think it's OK to charge twice as much for an education as a Big Ten school and then provide the paying customer half as much. For example at Madison there are 4 times as many alumni to network with. Madison allows students to load up on classes in real estate or other specialties that get you a job in the real world while MU forces you take 6 classes in Theo/Phil (one of each would have been suffice) that essentially steals from students who have no interest in becoming a priest or stand-up philosopher (only Mel Brooks seemed turned that into a paycheck). Further MU alumni are the most worthless group I've met who never return calls or even try to create a forcible entity like the Wisconsin Real Estate Alumni Association does in Wisconsin, Illinois and elsewhere. Finally MU's career resources group should all resign so they can lower tuition. I can't believe the only companies they could find to recruit graduating seniors were 100% commission paying insurance companies.
I would never send my son and daughter to Marquette as I've had way more responses from Wisconsin and ND alumni over the years than I have with MU alumni even though I'm not one of them. Even the paid MU staff don't return calls/emails even when I'm trying to help them.
This lack of strategic thinking has permeated the entire university and more and more alumni and even casual college bball fans will continue to skip games while also ignoring ridiculous flyers asking for alumni to pay for some other kids scholarship while they had to pay full price themselves.
I say shrink the school, shrink the tuition, give the kids real world training and teach them the importance of networking and helping your own once you graduate. Essentially a value added proposition that will pay more dividends than a Big 10 education.
In bball it's clear we won't ever be the program we were under Buzz 4 of his 5 years as the power structure didn't like all the cornrows even though the fans did with large turnouts and regular stays in the top 10. Our old bball niche was to be the polar opposite of Madison bball instead of trying to be Madison Light like we are now under Wojo. Once again a very dumb strategic decision instead of being the inner city team that has worked so well throughout our past history.
It's time to start playing in the Al with less empty seats and find our new niche as a low tier Big East team similar to DePaul that makes the NCAA once every ten years. We'll never be what we were in the Al days or the recent past so the sooner we realize this the better. Our leadership isn't proactive enough to change our basketball and overall university destiny at this point no matter how many delusional posters will try to convince themselves otherwise. Maybe some smart and strong alumni will rise up and create some winning strategies to get the alumni excited with pride again like Gov. Walker did. However our bball days are set on cruise control straight down for the foreseeable future.

"Yes a tremendous opportunity....nothing like an all catholic league....but worse yet an all catholic league minus Villanova and Georgetown. That wreaks of low mid-major and the end of Marquette basketball as we know it."
That was our esteemed poster in 2010. Hasn't learned a new tune in 6 years.

Can anyone interpret this bit about Walker? He excited alumni pride at MU? Can't recall that happening. No doubt, he excited people to say "that guy didn't graduate, he's an alumni?"
Wait. Was it a personal opposite day for Duane and he actually crafted the most intricate opposite essay of all time?
Al's first year record: 8-18
Al's second year: 14-12
Al's third year: 21-9, NIT runner-up (George Thompson's first year as a Soph)
I remember those empty seats at the old arena going to games with my folks. They did not stay empty much that third year. I believe next year will be in line with Al's third year; it will be even better if Henry becomes a Soph.
OP should head over to the politics board, seems like he'd be a Trump supporter.
I was hoping for 2-3 more wins out of this team but with no SR's I was not 100% sure what to expect. I think WOJO is growing as a Coach but I think he has more growth to do. I don't like when I hear his huddle speech's its more ranting then coaching. But we were 10-4 in close games this year so it could have turned out way worse.
I think the schedule was not very good this year and I hope they learn from it.
The AD and President are a huge upgrade over who they replaced and getting a Brand new stadium and a flagship Physical therapy program should help both the BBALL and the School. Butler, Crowder and DJO as JUCO's are by fair and away the exception to JUCO and not the Rule. Those 3 are probably 3 of the Top 10 biggest Impact juco's in the last 10 years.
I think MU is in as good a position as could be expected considering the Big East blew up (ended up in a highly funded Conf) and they made 2 really bad hires that probably set the school back but they have rebounded.
Allot of schools struggle. U of I , IU, DePaul, Boston college, Miami football. And the List goes on and on. Everybody wants to win and be a top 20 program and only 20 can do it and 100 are trying to do it.
I'm Optimistic that even without henry we will be a solid NCAA team next year.

I always wonder if the coach's huddle is affected when they stick a camera and a mic in there. If I were coaching, I am not so sure I'd be wanting to broadcast our strategy. Isn't that why football coaches cover their mouths when they are on camera?

Ok I've read the board talking points and I've seen the light.....
*We were a young team and next year we'll be significantly better even with with no Henry and no impact new players.
*Wojo is still learning how to be a head coach and there probably is no good reason why he was bypassed for so many other head coaching jobs while being an assistant at the most publicized program in college basketball for almost 20 years.
*It was smart of our president to give the highest profile, most expensive job in the university an extension even before conference season of his second year. After all ND showed the world the merits of such a "smart" move when they gave Charlie Weis a 10 year deal after his first year.
*Building a humongous, expensive sports facility to study endurance will lead to an incredible ROI for the university and society in general. After all academics and politicians are the masters of allocating capital as when things don't work out they can always ask their alumni for more donations or just raise taxes on their patrons who aren't paying their "fair share".
The future is bright indeed! Next year we might actually win 1 of 3 against mid major Xavier!

Hard to read, but I think his real anger is that he can't break into real estate because the Marquette alumni never call him back and he had to take philosophy instead of some real estate course...which evidently would have provided some great opportunity. Hate to break it to you, but you don't need a college degree to say "that looks like a nice house." perhaps if you paid attention in philosophy you could at least make a coherent argument with your misdirected anger.
Turned on the Badger vs Nebraska game. What a different level of play. It's like watching slow motion. Marquette can easily dominate ante either team. Hayes cannot jump. He stands around flat footed. Very poor basketball.

OMG! MU charges $38K per year now? It was $12K when I was there which is the equivalent of $21K in today's dollars.
No wonder Millenials love Bernie Sanders so much as I would too if I could get free college and not be saddled with debt in my 20's and beyond. A super expensive MU degree can get the same entry level 100% commission smiling and dialing job with no benefits that the real world is providing to Triton Junior College grads as well.
Thank God the government guaranteed student loans so capital providers no longer underwrote debt based on credit scores, % of debt, drop out actuarial rates, etc. Instead once the government said we would guarantee this debt then everyone was eligible for loans. With everyone elgible for loans demand was high and with high demand the universities jacked up their costs. With more revenue they started building palaces to themselves with new buildings with amazing architecture for such luxuries as a new Theater School.
It all sounds very similar to the housing bubble when Fannie Mae was a buyer of subprime debt that Wall Street would package together in tranches and get their buddies at the rating houses to bless it as AAA.
I smell a huge bubble brewing that is going to pop and end ugly like all popping bubbles do. Our government has more contingent liabilities than it can support and there are going to be a lot of people asking for their debt to be partially forgiven and it will be no longer be so easy to get a highly leveraged education. Once all this happens prices will drop to where they should be.
Too bad common sense is in such short supply in the world today.

I LOLed.
Scary enough, I agree with the general gist of duanewade's concerns about a higher education "bubble." I do think we will see some radical changes in the next 15 years. The rest of his rants though....pure gibberish

Love It.
I see a lot of posters on this thread that we haven't heard from in quite awhile.
