i love tradition, but warriors fans need to reflect on it, not dwell on it. a coffee is no longer a quarter and marquette is no longer the warriors....
from a MU fan that wanted me to relay the message
i like the way its put. Though the "lets go warriors" chant will never die, the one thing that does need to stop is the tomahawk chop. It started a couple games ago and it just doesn't make sense for us!
agreed, told the guys it doesn't make sense, some of them like it, dunno why.
interesting..., the tomahawk chop, of course, was never used when we were Warriors. What is truly missed, are the drums (DUM-dum-dum-dum-DUM-dum-dum-dum.) used whenever we were pressuring a team. Drove their coaches crazy. One actually remarked in a Sports Ill. article about tough places to play, " ...and those damn DRUMS!". Now, THAT was pressure.

Drums would be amazing, unfortunately the Big East has some pretty strict rules about noise makers which sucks!
last year the cheerleaders would do the drum noise w/ their cones on the floor...dunno why they cant do that this year or havent. I've tried asking them but they just have said they get yelled at for it.

The only thing more ridiculous than constantly beating the nickname issue dead horse is when people think they need to regulate how others cheer for their team. What a joke. What the hell was the point of that post anyway?
Let me make this real clear.
Some identify with Golden Eagles. Most identify with Warriors. Each have their own reasons. Let it be. Posts like that are worthless and only rile things up more.

Not that I didn't want Warriors, but you all are starting to sound like the hippies with Kerry '04 stickers still placed on their jalopies

the point of this post seems to be exactly that, "let it be."
and talk about riling things up, easy killer.
The subject of this thread is: "enjoy the game, not the name."
What do you think people are doing attending games? I promise you that at least 75 percent of them absolutely loathe the name, therefore it has to be the game they're enjoying.

Exactly

My point is why even bring it up seemingly out of nowhere? It's not like it hasn't been said, and it's not going to change anyone's mind.
fair enough.
i do see the pradox in starting a new post that argues to stop dwelling on this fact.
Really intelligent idea for a post ... a post telling people who support one nickname that they need to stop wasting time talking about the nickname. And you wonder why people would respond? How does riling things up by bringing the nickname debate out of nowhere help people 'focus on the game' etc?

Not trying to rile things up, just thought it was an interesting perspective from a source looking at things from the outside

This is my first post on muscoop.com. I am an avid reader and enjoy the great discussions about Marquette basketball. With that being said, since this is a BLOG, the person can post whatever they please about Marquette basketball, of course within reason. If it causes you that much distress, pass over the post. (The concept of moving forward) Secondly, the issue of the warrior name vs. the golden eagle name is constantly threaded throughout all posts (with subtle grace or bitter, rehashing of the past). The main idea "enjoy the game, not the name." I hope they are enjoying the game. After all, this is what's important. Life is about maturing and evolving - it is inevitable, and the bitterness (that sometimes arises) which revolves around the "Warriors" name should not be dwelled upon. When you post a reply, talk about how great the team was, is, and will be (I know most of you do but for the few) but don't lecture us from your soapbox about why a name is better. The game is the most significant factor. The name does not define you. Rather, the spirit and action being taken place is what makes Marquette basketball great ('77 championships and the progressive development of a fantastic program since 2000). The name has changed but the spirit of the warrior still lives through the spirit of the fierce golden eagle. Go with that; enjoy that, and enjoy the game. Don't live vicariously (bitterly) through the past or you will end up missing the present. All right I am hopping off my own soapbox ;) That said, I hope to see all of you in San Antonio, TX in March.
...which makes me think of a sign I once made:
Fight like a Warrior, Soar like an Eagle!!
Muwarrior that is a fantastic sign (pure brilliance) and should be given out to all students courtesy of Marquette Athletic department
I disagree. There are a number of arguements for people continueing to be upset about the name change...
1. The poor handling by the university of the situation and lack of concern for key constituents (alumni and students)
2. When I paid tuition, I was in part buying into the Marquette brand and identified with the Warrior. They have my money but I do not have what I paid for (in part)
3. Students still call them Warriors - I don't know why, but maybe it is because Golden Eagles is weak.
Fair enough Irv
The school did handle it poorly and it was a shame that they didn't listen to the voice of their students (current and alumni) but the school has the final say.
Secondly, I want you to return any materialistic items that you possess that have undergone a name change. If you own a Cingular phone start a class action suit (sarcasm) because Cingular has merged with AT&T and hence the name has changed to AT&T. The examples are countless. Marquette did not sign a contract your freshmen year, that listed off its responsibilities to you - eternal bliss and reassurance of things to stay the exact same. Marquette's aim is to educate you and create an environment that is conducive to that, sports and other things are just amenities that make the school more enjoyable. I am sorry that you feel you have been fiscally taken advantage of.

Ask Macy's how their name change is going over in Chicago!!
If they were smart, they'd change back. This is a VERY similar situation, especially since I consider "Marshall Fields" to be equally as offensive as "Warriors."

when I was young and attended Big Five games in the Palestra - 1970's-1980's. Streamers would be thrown upon the first basket made. The sky would be full of streamers. The officials would have to call a 5 min timeout to clean the floor. Did MU ever get into this at the Mecca?

In the early 80's it was rolls of TP.
For BaltimoreFan -
Don't want to pick a fight on the name issue, but your AT&T / Cingular reference is not apples-to-apples. The Marquette name has not changed.
This is more of a bait and switch. Alumni (we) paid to for the Marquette Warrior, not the Golden Eagle. All of the traditions and pride that we purchased have been taken away with no regard to the consequences.
Think of it as signing a long-term cell plan with an awesome phone, but the coverage sucks. (Again, I am not picking a fight - this example just seems more appropriate.)
As for the contract, eternal bliss, things not changing etc. - you are right - except that things did not just change, choices were made.
I love Marquette, had a great experience, received a great education and I would not be on this board if I was not passionate. Still, the name Golden Eagles sucks and the school handled this poorly.
I agree this topic still fuels the fire
However, as a warrior graduate and parent of child who will be graduating on Sunday, I have learned to put away the anger. She'll be a golden eagle. I can never change that.
I sometimes feel the lack of unity in our cheering at both home and away games is we will never have a cheer with the word "eagles" in it, or anything other than "we are Marquette". Listen to the badgers and other schools, they have a multitude of cheers and the students learn them at football games, etc. It's loud and in unison.
Other schools have their percussion section playing different beats for specific cheers. I would assume that's taboo while there's play on the court, but when the clock is stopped, we should be loud.
I am over 40 and loud at the games. I stand and yell. Sometimes I bring a sign. I get the evil eye from others my age. That really irks me.
Just because you are over 40, you can still be a fanatic. (I draw the line at face paint, though)
I love my team & my school, no matter what the name.
PS If the school is not going back, at least they could start showing the clip from the Hudsucker Proxy which shows Tim Robbins' character doing a "go eagles" cheer (which is hilarious) At least we could take humor with the nickname.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
Listening to all of this complaining about the name is like listening to Rosie O'Donnell whenever she opens her mouth... You hate to hear what she has to say, but you still listen to it (read it in this case) just to see how ridiculous it is!
Its evident that everyone that "hates" or "can't stand" the nickname are adults, but whenever i read these posts, all i picture is some crying like a 4 year old "But Mommy, I don't want to be a Golden Eagle!" Then everyone else trying to tell the complainer to get over it is the Mom responding "well, i'm sorry, that's just the way it is, you will learn in life that there are just some things you can't control"

I disagree with this. I think we do have unity, it's just the games haven't been too much to be excited about at home yet. When we've been in close games so far we've been playing terribly, and when we've been blowing teams out we've been clearly the superior team, so it's easy to not cheer as much. I think when it comes to conference games it will start getting louder. I don't think the lack of our name in our cheers hurts our cheers, UW doesn't cheer their name, it's just "Let's go Red" and then dancing around. I'd rather not have our student section look like a musical...sitting in theirs for the game I thought it was one of the dumbest things I've seen. I will agree that they were more enthusiastic than our fans have been this year, but I'd be willing to guess our fans would be more enthusiastic if we were playing Wisconsin at home instead of Utah Valley State and IUPUI. Once big games come I think big crowds and big noises will come.

Wow.
I'm trying to get my mind around the notion that you think pride and tradition is something that is bought.
I guess I mistakenly thought that it was earned based on actual on-court success over time by the coaches and athletes who actually put in the practice and played the games in order to achieve it.

Amen. The issue is pretty close to dead, and stuff like this only keeps it from finally going away altogether. What's done is done.

ummmm...we once made....i'm sure all the blood was my doing.... *i figured i'd chime in on the subject without actually relating to it or causing more "arguing", i have certain reasons for hating the eagles name, none of which being the name (it may be bland but oh well...), more for what it stands for*

coverage: performance
name: NAME!

Should I stop dwelling on my freshman year girl friend years later too? We are our memories. The fact is, many schools are remembered by multiple nicknames. UCLA: Uclans and Bruins. Georgia Tech: Yellow Jackets and Rambling Wreck. Northwestern: The Purple, Fighting Methodists, Purple Haze and Wildcats. Arkansas: Razorbacks, Hogs. And on and on.
The name "Warriors" in itself is literally not offensive--let's get real. The symbolism and cartoon nature apparently are to some--I can see that. I find our nation's capitol's NFL team's nickname infinitely more offensive. And--although used as counter argument often in these debates--how weird is it to have a nickname after an ethnic group--like "The Fighting Irish"? Maybe we should end all the debate and settle on the "Golden Poles"?
To me, really, it doesn't matter that we have multiple names as what is important are our memories at MU and what we carry forward--which is different for every student. Any attempt to "correct" this will only end in total failure. For goodness sake, our school fight song references "A-hoya" which is either a version of Georgetown's nickname or a word no one remembers what it really means or some Jesuit secret code word or a bag of cookies. Maybe it means Chief Golden Eagle, the First Warrior, in Latin. Who knows, but that is my story and I am sticking to it. Enjoy the ride, it defines us.
does anyone know if there was a debate when we changed from hilltoppers to warriors?
very true maxpower...you made some kickass blood coming out of Bucky's ripped off head on that sign!
i would like it to be the avalanche
"What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet"
I know people feel passionately about it, but its just a name. It's still MU. Its still an urban university in Milwaukee. It's still run by the Jesuits. It still has a (renewed) hoops tradition.
That's it.
I will never claim than MU did a good job handling the situation, but I can forgive because the school has done so many other great things (for me, and in general).
I'm proud of the Warriors, I'm proud of the Eagles. Hell, I'm proud of the Hilltoppers (which I still think is a pretty cool name).
