i love tradition, but warriors fans need to reflect on it, not dwell on it. a coffee is no longer a quarter and marquette is no longer the warriors....

from a MU fan that wanted me to relay the message

robmufan

i like the way its put.  Though the "lets go warriors" chant will never die, the one thing that does need to stop is the tomahawk chop.  It started a couple games ago and it just doesn't make sense for us!

muwarrior87

agreed, told the guys it doesn't make sense, some of them like it, dunno why.

augoman

interesting..., the tomahawk chop, of course, was never used when we were Warriors.  What is truly missed, are the drums (DUM-dum-dum-dum-DUM-dum-dum-dum.) used whenever we were pressuring a team.  Drove their coaches crazy.  One actually remarked in a Sports Ill. article about tough places to play, " ...and those damn DRUMS!".  Now, THAT was pressure.

Drums would be amazing, unfortunately the Big East has some pretty strict rules about noise makers which sucks!

muwarrior87

last year the cheerleaders would do the drum noise w/ their cones on the floor...dunno why they cant do that this year or havent. I've tried asking them but they just have said they get yelled at for it.

The only thing more ridiculous than constantly beating the nickname issue dead horse is when people think they need to regulate how others cheer for their team. What a joke. What the hell was the point of that post anyway?

Let me make this real clear. Some identify with Golden Eagles. Most identify with Warriors. Each have their own reasons. Let it be. Posts like that are worthless and only rile things up more.

Not that I didn't want Warriors, but you all are starting to sound like the hippies with Kerry '04 stickers still placed on their jalopies

the point of this post seems to be exactly that, "let it be."

and talk about riling things up, easy killer.

The subject of this thread is: "enjoy the game, not the name."

What do you think people are doing attending games? I promise you that at least 75 percent of them absolutely loathe the name, therefore it has to be the game they're enjoying.

My point is why even bring it up seemingly out of nowhere? It's not like it hasn't been said, and it's not going to change anyone's mind.

fair enough.

i do see the pradox in starting a new post that argues to stop dwelling on this fact.

Chicago_inferiority_complexes

Really intelligent idea for a post ... a post telling people who support one nickname that they need to stop wasting time talking about the nickname. And you wonder why people would respond? How does riling things up by bringing the nickname debate out of nowhere help people 'focus on the game' etc?

Not trying to rile things up, just thought it was an interesting perspective from a source looking at things from the outside

This is my first post on muscoop.com. I am an avid reader and enjoy the great discussions about Marquette basketball. With that being said, since this is a BLOG, the person can post whatever they please about Marquette basketball, of course within reason. If it causes you that much distress, pass over the post. (The concept of moving forward) Secondly, the issue of the warrior name vs. the golden eagle name is constantly threaded throughout all posts (with subtle grace or bitter, rehashing of the past). The main idea "enjoy the game, not the name." I hope they are enjoying the game. After all, this is what's important. Life is about maturing and evolving - it is inevitable, and the bitterness (that sometimes arises) which revolves around the "Warriors" name should not be dwelled upon. When you post a reply, talk about how great the team was, is, and will be (I know most of you do but for the few) but don't lecture us from your soapbox about why a name is better. The game is the most significant factor. The name does not define you. Rather, the spirit and action being taken place is what makes Marquette basketball great ('77 championships and the progressive development of a fantastic program since 2000). The name has changed but the spirit of the warrior still lives through the spirit of the fierce golden eagle. Go with that; enjoy that, and enjoy the game. Don't live vicariously (bitterly) through the past or you will end up missing the present. All right I am hopping off my own soapbox  ;) That said, I hope to see all of you in San Antonio, TX in March.

muwarrior87

...which makes me think of a sign I once made:

Fight like a Warrior, Soar like an Eagle!!

baltimoremufan

Muwarrior that is a fantastic sign (pure brilliance) and should be given out to all students courtesy of Marquette Athletic department

Irv the Working Man

I disagree.  There are a number of arguements for people continueing to be upset about the name change...

1.  The poor handling by the university of the situation and lack of concern for key constituents (alumni and students)

2.  When I paid tuition, I was in part buying into the Marquette brand and identified with the Warrior.  They have my money but I do not have what I paid for (in part)

3.  Students still call them Warriors - I don't know why, but maybe it is because Golden Eagles is weak.

baltimoremufan

Fair enough Irv

The school did handle it poorly and it was a shame that they didn't listen to the voice of their students (current and alumni) but the school has the final say.

Secondly, I want you to return any materialistic items that you possess that have undergone a name change. If you own a Cingular phone start a class action suit (sarcasm) because Cingular has merged with AT&T and hence the name has changed to AT&T. The examples are countless. Marquette did not sign a contract your freshmen year, that listed off its responsibilities to you - eternal bliss and reassurance of things to stay the exact same. Marquette's aim is to educate you and create an environment that is conducive to that, sports and other things are just amenities that make the school more enjoyable. I am sorry that you feel you have been fiscally taken advantage of.

Ask Macy's how their name change is going over in Chicago!!

If they were smart, they'd change back. This is a VERY similar situation, especially since I consider "Marshall Fields" to be equally as offensive as "Warriors."

when I was young and attended Big Five games in the Palestra - 1970's-1980's.  Streamers would be thrown upon the first basket made. The sky would be full of streamers.  The officials would have to call a 5 min timeout to clean the floor.  Did MU ever get into this at the Mecca?

In the early 80's it was rolls of TP.
