Title: Wisconsin Thoughts
Post by: tower912 on December 12, 2015, 02:28:27 PM
1.   Great win.   Mmmmm, crow.    Tastes like rodent.
2.   All hail the twin towers.
3.  Make your bleeping free throws.
4.  Haanif is a complete player.    Great, game changing defense on Koenig.
5.  Better team without Traci or JJ on the floor today.
6.  Quit giving up so many bleeping offensive rebounds.
7.  Down to a 7 man rotation today, and basically 5.
8.  Got away from feeding the bigs when Wiscy made its run.    Getting the bigs a touch in the post needs to be made a requirement.
9.   Best defensive effort of the season.
10.  A win over Wisconsin is the best early Christmas present possible.
11.  Well done, Warriors.

One big thing.

Sandy, JJ and Cheatham combined to hold Koenig and Hayes to:

18 pts on 7-29 shooting

That is huge.

Hell, put a bullet on #3 also. Haanif played a great game, but that free throw at the end was ugly - his upper body was actually moving away from the hoop.

4. Haanif had at least two turnovers when WI made ther run at the end. A bad pass and a travel. He is going to be really good, but he still makes freshmen mistakes.

Lumping JJJ in with Traci today is like me comparing Michael jordan and Mark Madsen.

JJJ played some great D on Hayes. Made some nice buckets and few good feeds and Hayes got all the no calls.

He wasn't great but you act like he almost lost us the game by playing.

I'm not surprised we let the rodents back in the game just based on being in the road and being so young. That said, I love beating UWM more than anything else in sports. Mmmmmmmmm.

Henry- two baskets under 2 are huge - big time player making big time plays at big time moments

Impressive without traci in first half

Make your free throws

At about 12:30 left in the first Half Cheatham scored a bucket on a 1 on 1 transition play finishing through Koenig's D.  After he made the bucket he turned to run back on D but turned his head back and said something to Koenig real quick.  Not one bit intimidated by a junior who started in a National Title game.  Love that kid's attitude.  He'll get used to the speed of the college game and the turnovers will go down.

Always good to beat Wisconsin, especially in their place.

I think they have 11 non-conference losses there in the Bo era, and I swear we have like 4 of those but I'm not sure.

Free throws...Jeebus.
Henry and Luke were solid.
Worst Wisconsin team in at least 10 years, but they will still knock off a few teams and are dangerous there.

Overall, just good way to start the Holiday season.

Peace

Free throws were just brutal.  6 for 14 with two frontend misses under five seconds.

Got crushed on offensive boards, 14 to 6, but some of them were missed threes that just landed in Wisky's lap

MU only took five three pointers.

Carter, well..... 0 points, 0 assists, 4 turnovers.  Get em next game.

Cohen/Cheatham played awesome defense and Cheatham will be very, very good in few years.

Skill set of Ellenson is just remarkable.  He will be a very rich kid next year. Start looking for a PF Wojo.......

Great learning experience for a young team today.

We definitely have 3 of the last 5 at their place.  2007 with Dom James swatting the crap out of Hughes at the buzzer despite us being up 5 or 7.  2011 with Derrick Wilson starting as a freshman in place of Cadougan.  And today.

Non-conference losses, I believe you are correct. This was our third win over Bo at the Kohl Center. 2007 and 2011 were the others. So...pencil in a win in 2019?

Can't win with 5 guys playing 40 minutes each. JJ had multiple positive contributions off the bench, as Haywards pointed out. You are reaching lumping JJs game and play today with Traci.'s  Team had some nice stretches with JJ on the court. But its your "game thoughts" post, so carry on...

We had periods where we were really on top of things. When we had the 14-point lead, I was actually nervous because I felt a bit too invincible. What I love about this is this team now KNOWS they can win on the road. Road games at Creighton, Seton Hall, DePaul, and St. John's will likely go a long way to determining how our season ends. Glad the boys now know they can go into a hostile environment and come out with a W.

They did and it was a gutsy win on the road (first time for many of the guys). Marquette really, really needed this one. This won't be a "good win" on section Sunday, but it may have been a "bad loss". I can't see the Badgers finishing above 500. So, good win and hope they continue to get better. I think each player is starting to mold into their roles.

-Team looked composed after first two possessions.
-would be nice to find Sandy involved a bit more throughout the game, but he sure seems to show up at the right moments
-Carter should have been out there at the end.  We needed a true ball handler and distributor.  Forget the early struggles.
-Fischer seemed shocked that the refs weren't calling stuff down low at the end.  He needs to go up a bit stronger in traffic.  But he's been so huge!
-glad to see we didn't force up endless 3's.
-FT's....come on now.  Should have won by more
-still, great win

Had you told me Hayes and Koenig would go a combined 7/29 from the floor with 6 total rebounds, I would have expected a 15-point blowout win. Great defense on their stars, weathered the contributions of Showalter, Happ, and Brown.

Great to see us deal with opposing home court, should help instill experience and some confidence later.  Missing front ends on the other hand....  The "W" streak continues, hopefully a few more should follow.  Realistically, all games a threat but not another serious challenge until 1/6 (and only because another road game)??

I expected Henry to put up numbers. Maybe not quite 16.7/8.8, but numbers. I expected Fischer to be the best center in the league. I expected Duane to score. But I didn't expect this from Sandy. And while his all-around numbers are very nice (9.3 ppg/4.1 rpg/3.3 apg/42.1% 3PFG%), his defense has been the part of his game I've been most impressed with. I think he will be one of the keys to our season, knowing he will likely end up drawing assignments like Hart, Blueitt, Bullock, and Dunham.

Reading JS comments, on any story, is the shortest route towards rooting for the apocalypse.

Oh, I know. But I did love this one:

<<The one point that disturbs me about MU is their willingness to accept the one and done frauds like the younger Ellenson. Nothing personally against the kid, just universities, like MU, who pretend to care about student athletes.>>

Because UW wouldn't have taken Henry if he wanted to go there. Nor did Bo go hard after Looney and Stone. Bo and his disciples hate the idea of 1-and-dones ... until they actually succeed at landing one.

Only played 7 today.   The rest of the cupcake season should be devoted to getting the bench ready to contribute.   I worry about too many players playing 35 a game.

They're 19 - 21 years old. At home they play for hours every day. Now, they play twice a week.

How many days in a row did Kemba do it?

My biggest takeaway was we are the better team IMO. Been awhile since I thought we had better squad. Never felt we were going to lose the game for the first few minutes on.

Always good to beat Wisconsin, especially in their place.

I think they have 11 non-conference losses there in the Bo era, and I swear we have like 4 of those but I'm not sure.

Close .. 3.  Not bad.

What that shows me is that pretty much everyone played within themselves.  Hank was the only player to shoot under 50% on the game.  That is outstanding.

17-2 on fast break points.  Nice to see a MU team looking to run opportunistically off of defense.

Points in the paint + FTM = 42-17  in MU's favor.  Great, great defensive effort.

Thought the long break in play to fix the shot clock cooled MU off.  That was at the same basket in that game a couple of years ago when the basket and overhead clocks were misaligned.  Buy some new cables, please.

Great environment, great to see a sullen Badger crowd.  The beer tasted colder, post game.

Bobby Knight used to say something similar (when he wasn't choking guys or throwing chairs).

I can't remember his exact quote, but it was something along the lines of "If 19-22 year olds can't handle playing in 4-minute bursts between 2 1/2-minute TV timeouts, they should find another sport."

Lumping JJJ in with Traci today is like me comparing Michael jordan and Mark Madsen.

JJJ played some great D on Hayes. Made some nice buckets and few good feeds and Hayes got all the no calls.

He wasn't great but you act like he almost lost us the game by playing.

I agree with this analysis. JJJ made a lot of very important contributions to our win today. In fact without those contributions a victory would have been much more difficult. He made some nice drives, had some nice assists and was a quick athletic presence defensively and offensively. He did a good job on Hayes and did what Wojo asked of him.  He gave us 14 hard fought minutes.

I really like the commitment to going into the post and the willingness of Henry to stay down there.  That is this team's identity.  If they committed to scoring in the post and playing solid defense like they did today they will be in nearly all their conference games home and away.  I don't know if it was an adjustment the Badgers made or our guys getting tight at the end but at about the 9 minute mark of the second half we suddenly stopped going inside and of course the lead dwindled.
We've got to keep pouring it on when we have a lead.  Seems like Wojo's teams that last 2 years have gone away from what built the 2nd leads.  Got to find a way to finish particularly on the road.

i thought the issue ~9min mark of the second half was a bit of exhaustion and Wojo pulled Henry out right after (or right before) then sat Luke for a shockingly short breather.

Agree with the inside game being a big key to conference play but the guard quality we will see in conference is a whole other level from what they've seen so far.  Games 2 and 3 at G'Town then Prov (IIRC) are going to be great learning opportunities against incredible guards.

Amazing that we defeated a team with 17 players. How do they get around the NCAA scholarship rule? I know they have at least two walk-ons, but do they have four? And the large roster doesn't include the non-qualifier who can't dress for games. So he's No. 18.

Will Decorah (http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/2015/10/1/9432995/wisconsin-basketball-adds-walk-on-will-decorah), Jordan Smith (http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/2011/5/6/2157180/jordan-smith-will-walk-on-for-badger-hoops), Matt Ferris (http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/wisconsin-basketball-recruiting/2014/3/22/5535336/matt-ferris-walk-on-wisconsin), Zak Showalter (http://www.uwbadgers.com/news/2012/3/27/Badgers_announce_Zak_Showalter_as_walk_on_for_2012_13_season.aspx), Aaron Moesch (http://www.wearegreenbay.com/sports/high-school-sports/southwests-aaron-moesch-to-walk-on-with-badgers), Jackson Bax (http://host.madison.com/wsj/sports/college/basketball/men/badgers-men-s-basketball-uw-adds-walk-on-guard-jackson/article_6b4a7388-2ae8-556a-90ea-0d495ab17ab2.html), and TJ Schulndt (http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/wisconsin-basketball-recruiting/2014/5/13/5713936/t-j-schlundt-walk-on-wisconsin-2014) all initially walked on at Wisconsin. I am fairly certain Van Vliet (the kid sitting out) is on scholarship, and I believe Smith and Showalter are both on scholarship now. That brings them to 13. I remember a few years back, Syracuse had something like 21 players on their roster. The Orange have 18 this year. They could have challenged Wisconsin to an all-walk-on game.

JJJ was good.  He is good in limited minutes unless he is hot from the field.

I am going to take it easy on Carter because of the early foul trouble - and I thought the second foul was bogus.

Duane will another solid effort.  32 minutes doing a lot of the little things.

Agree on all fronts.

Funny thing about JJJ ... I was watching with about 20 other Warriors at our event in Charlotte and when JJJ came in in the second half, I declared that unlike some who gave up on him, I really like him. I was acting very proud of myself.

JJJ then committed two fouls, missed a layup and forgot to defend Koenig, who made a 3. Thanks for making me look like a dummy, Jajuan! (Still like you, though.)

Carter deserves a mulligan. He's a kid and he's allowed to have a bad game after a very, very nice stretch for us.

Duane has been solid all season and I thought he showed great maturity on his shot selection and role yesterday.

Wasn't there about 5 seconds left on the shot clock when he took it and about 8 seconds when he started the drive?

The shot clock was winding down, someone had to do something.  He drove, which is a good play.  The defense responded well so he had to take a tough shot with the clock winding down.  Yes, we were fortunate to make it, but it really wasn't a bad shot.

People seem to forget about situation.

Similarly, JJJ guarding Bronson on the 3.  I'm pretty sure he was doing exactly what they were told.  When Hayes has the ball give help and force him to stay out of the pain.

Bronson backed off to NBA range, which left too much ground to close.  Again, not really a bad play as that was what they were coached to do.

Cheatham is better than I thought he'd be at this point. He needs polish and experience to really star, but he can already drive to the hoop, score outside, and play quality man defense. Wisconsin was on to his baseline drive yesterday and took it away a couple times, that was well-scouted, but when he adds a few moves to his repertoire, he could be scary good. It wouldn't surprise me when all is said and done if he's the most decorated college player of his recruiting class.

After a day to reflect on the win I really think they can end up being very good this season. I felt we were going to be a surprise in the country and feel we will be a top 20 team a few weeks down the road. Very hard to stop two NBA caliber 6-11 guys. Cheatham is the real deal and I am excited for first time in a couple of years.

One last note, last two years you could not pay me to go to game (did go to a few) and I will money to watch HE play. He is a special player. While I think he is 100% one and done, I actually hope he stays another year because I think we could be very, very good a year from now if he hangs around.

I agree Haanif is rapidly becoming my favorite player.  I see him staying all 4 years and by the last 2 being one of the marquee players in the BE.  He has the potential to be the kind of player that you feel you know and is the face of MU for a while.  We really haven't had someone like that on the team since Lazar.  Jimmy and Jae were great but there is something special about a 4 year player.  You kind of experience the program through him while he is here.
Go Warriors.

That's part of why I'm not assuming Henry will be back, because when I think of next year's team with him...oh man, I start to get a warm tingly feeling in my nethers. Can't get too excited and be left with nothing.

The Marquette Effect:

http://host.madison.com/wsj/sports/college/basketball/men/badgers-men-s-basketball-sophomore-guard-riley-dearring-announces-he/article_83773c40-7a56-5009-8787-f0a637613bd9.html

Dearring, a third-year sophomore guard, announced the departure in a statement on his Twitter account on Sunday night.

"I am truly grateful to the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity, but I feel it's best for me if I continue my career elsewhere," Dearring said. "I want to thank all my current and former teammates for all the great memories! I want to thank all the fans for their support. I will cherish every second I was able to spend here but I need to move forward. I wish the program the best of luck in the future!"

Dearring appeared in 18 career games for the Badgers. He played 45 minutes and scored 13 points during that time.

After redshirting and playing sparingly last season, the door was open for more playing time this season on a young team. But Dearring, who was slowed by injuries his first two seasons, was quickly passed up by freshman swingman Khalil Iverson and has played a total of six minutes in three games for the Badgers (6-5).

The 6-foot-5 Dearring was a finalist for the Mr. Basketball award in Minnesota as a senior after averaging 19.2 points while leading Minnetonka High School to a 20-5 record.

Dearring was the second player to commit in UW's 2013 recruiting class. He followed Bronson Koenig in a class that eventually grew to include Jordan Hill, Vitto Brown and Nigel Hayes.

UW was the only high-major program to offer Dearring when he committed in July 2012. His other offers at the time were from Drake and Illinois State.

Dearring is the third scholarship player to leave the UW program since the end of the 2011-12 season, joining transfers Jarrod Uthoff (Iowa) and George Marshall (South Dakota State).

Sorry - didn't know where else to put this, but glanced at a Badger Board post, and wanted to share:

When bo gets tired of coaching, it will be a great loss for everyone; not just badger basketball. I selfishly hope he'd be interested in doing TV studio work or something because (when he wants to be) he's just as witty and charming as Al and I'd like to continue seeing Bo on TV.

Bo has about as much charm as a prostate exam.

Saw that too. That was phenomenal. Aside from 2 wide open 3s. Koenig sucked today.

One of which was JJ falling asleep on defense.
