Sorry all news articles were from a couple of months ago, this was released just a few minutes ago.
We launched a video game league almost 10 years ago. We were too far ahead of the curve. It didn't last long, but it was an interesting space to be in. Been noticing it has taken off again.

Ya there were many reasons why the direct tv league failed. Being ahead of it's time wasn't one of them. The insane cheesyness level was probably the main concern.
It seems like now is the right time for something like this to actually be successful. One of the most popular online games, DOTA 2, had something like 4.5 million viewers watching The International which is the games largest annual tournament.
Twitch has gotten to be a pretty big thing. Owned by none other than Amazon.

Yup, you can make some decent money on twitch if you're good. It's amazing how many successful Internet companies have emerged over the past decade. Heck, look at the company roosterteeth. They made a whole company based on their Machinima Halo series.

Perhaps, but the point was that we thought at the time this could be something...that was nearly 10 years ago.

Rooster Teeth is owned by Fullscreen, which is a joint venture between AT&T and Chernin. ;) I've been involved a bit for the last 12 months on the OTT side.
IS it really a sport if you sit for long hours playing in front of a screen?

There is definitely extreme hand eye coordination, strategy, etc. Sport? No. Game? Yes. Similar to bowling, darts, pool, some would argue golf, etc. I'd definitely put it into the category of skill, physical ability, mental ability, etc.
