ARRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHH!
I had a sales rep visit me a work last week and her daughter is a Freshman at Belmont. She thought her daughter may be the only one from Connecticut there.
I was blown away of photos of the campus. Apparently a bunch of country music stars are grads and the school has some solid financial donor backing as a result.

The pictures are not misleading. My office was about 3 miles away from the Belmont campus, it is very impressive.

Freaky... even though it was technically phrased as a question, the Mrs. already told
me that.
Attractiveness of campus aside, I'll be surprised if MU wins this one. Belmont executes incredibly well in the halfcourt, and has shooters that can really punish mistakes. MU was very poor last night with their discipline defensively, both with overplaying and fouling. Plays right into a veteran team's hands.
On the other hand, Belmont hasn't been a great defensive team, and MU has more size and speed. Crucial for Luke to stay out of foul trouble in this one. He and Henry will be a handful for their frontcourt.

Belmont is good but they did manage to lose to Eastern Kentucky,Eastern Illinois, Jacksonville State, Morehead State and Wright State (twice) last season.
If they are hitting 3s and we put them on the line a ton it will be a very tough game. They will have trouble stopping our inside game assuming Luke and Henry can stay out of foul trouble.
ps Maybe we should change our name to Eastern Wisconsin or Marquette State for just 1 game? 8-)
Stupid question, but is Belmont the same as Belmont Abbey? The same school that Al began his coaching career at?

Then you might want to prepare to be shocked. 10 years ago a talented but young MU team lost to Winthrop in the second home game of the season. Winthrop was coming off an NCAA appearance and returned everyone from that team. Just like Belmont. Returning everyone is a HUGE advantage at this time of the year and those guys did win 20+ games last year. I actually wouldn't be "shocked" if MU trailed most of the game.
So better be prepared. By the way the team that lost to Winthrop, a few weeks later beat #2 UCONN and went on to go the NCAA tournament. So if we lose, as I fear we will, don't go crazy. Young teams take time.

Belmont and LSU are the two games I am most worried about losing in the non-conference. This is a very, very tough team to start a season with. Also, don't expect this Belmont team to be intimidated by the Bradley Center. These guys have gone into both North Carolina and Stanford in the past few years and come away with wins.
Defense will be the story of this game. We need good man-to-man defense to limit their shooters and need to take advantage of mismatches against their defense. Fouls will be huge. Can't be sending them to the line all night long. I'm hoping for a win, but this is likely to be the toughest season opener in a long time, at least since IUPUI, who had a lead midway through the second half against Crean and the Three Amigos in 2007.
So what if we blow them out by 25 then. Is that a testament to the "we're back" mindset or belmont just had an off game.

Looked into this and it is a pretty impressive list. Florida Georgia Line (both members), Canaan Smith, Josh Turner, Lee Ann Womack, Trisha Yearwood, Steven Curtis Chapman (not country, but was huge in the Christian music scene a little ways back). That's just some of the more notable ones. What are they doing in their music school?

Where the hell did you get this?
Belmont was a 15-seed last season with an RPI of 105. If MU wants to avoid a disappointing Selection Sunday, this is the type of game that they need to win. Obviously, there's a lot of basketball to play but a home loss to an OVC school could end up being the difference between the NCAAT and the NIT at season's end.

Not necessarily either of the above, nor would a loss (even by double-digits) a sign that the season is over. But this is the type of team known for springing early season upsets and has done it (with these players on the roster) to bigger and better teams than we are putting on the floor Friday. Simply, this isn't a game we should take for granted.

from the cbs rankings:
58. Belmont: The Bruins made the Tournament one year ahead of schedule behind a miracle Taylor Barnette 3 against favored Murray State. This was always going to be Rick Byrd's next great team, and there's a chance he leads them to 25 wins with leading scorer Craig Bradshaw looking like the favorite for OVC player of the year.
63. Marquette: Henry Ellenson is the star incoming recruit, but this team is going to get improved performance from Duane Wilson and Jajuan Johnson. Still: very, very young group.
not sure the MU team 3 years ago (that got past davidson on a neutral court with a small miracle) would have had me feeling completely confident about this game. that said, this isn't the team of 3 years ago, and if three years from now we're still ranked behind belmont in the preseason polls we have issues...but here and now...it's as tough of a home opener as i can remember.

1) Belmont is very good and experienced. It'll take our best effort. A full house makes a difference.
2) It's actually an outstanding university but I refuse to give them any props prior to the game. Freakin community college until after we administer the beat down.

I don't know...we've had some scares from teams with similar profiles in recent years. Southern in 2013, coming off a NCAA appearance, gave us a good game. NC Central in 2012 was within 3 with 10 to play and kept it fairly close. Bucknell in 2010 had us on the ropes before Davante Gardner exploded late and got everyone excited about a rotund freshman.
If you have a good team (like we hope to this year) these are games you should win, yes, but if you look past them, these are the exact types of teams that excel at springing the upset. Just ask the then-12th ranked Tar Heels from 2013 if Belmont is a team you should never think twice about.

They have an outstanding music program. They have done a few televised christmas concerts on PBS the past few years. If they play basketball as well as they sing were in for a game.

Well, those championship game appearances were fairly significant in making Butler a nationally recognizable name, which Belmont (despite regular success) is not. Butler is also a bigger basketball school. Hinkle seats over 9,000 and the Bulldogs draw 7,700 per game. Belmont's arena seats 5,000 and draws about 2,700 per game.

If Belmont controls the tempo and hits their shots, they win. They have faced tougher teams than MU on a regular basis. They are experienced. For MU to win, they need to force tempo, turn Belmont over, limit their own turnovers, stay out of foul trouble, control the boards and shoot better from 3. Will experience triumph over young skill?

Of course an inexperienced team like ours could lose to a good, experienced team like Belmont, especially if Belmont is making shots from all over the floor.
And of course folks here (and elsewhere) will go into Panic Mode even though, logically, they shouldn't. Since when is fandom logical?
I did not watch one minute of any Italy games or of the exhibition game the other night, partly because I was busy but partly because I was "saving myself" for actual games that matter.
So I am psyched to watch this game, to see HE in a Marquette uniform in a game that counts, to see Cheatham and the much-discussed improvement of Cohen, among other things. I am having a few fellow Marquettians over to the house to watch.
Regardless of what happens, I won't get too high or too low. I very much remember the losses to Winthrop and Green Bay, remember the ridiculous amount of angst, and remember that both MU teams went on to have fun, successful seasons.
And regardless of what happens, I will still very much be looking forward to my trip to Brooklyn with Mrs. MU82.

MU opens at -3.5
Not that it really matters, but I saw they opened at -5 and it has since dropped down to -3.5

Who are the NBA players?
Henry is bringing Wally wherever he goes 8-)
This is going to be a solid test for the team starting out the season. Looking for some good performances from Luke and Duane. Also JJJ will be motivated for a good showing against a team from his home state. Sandy will also be a tough match up for them.
I will be happy for whatever we get from the freshman.
Just get the W on the board and move on.

Uh huh...you never hung a tie on the door at Schroeder?
I lived in Tower my sophomore year. True story:
A girl was helping me with my Russian homework -- yeah, effen Russian; what was I thinking? -- and we were sitting close to each other and flirting and all of a sudden we were making out.
But my bed, as always, was covered with clothes and generally a pigsty ... so we were on my roommate's bed!
And we're getting pretty hot and heavy, big-time making out, hands down each other's pants, etc, and my roommate opens the door. He sees us and immediate turns around and slams the door.
The mood is broken, though, and soon enough I walk the girl back to Cobeen.
I get back and my roommate is in the room and he says, "Did you have to do that on my bed?"
I pointed to my pigsty bed and started laughing my ass off. He couldn't help but laugh, too ... but he also told me to never do it again. He also told me to put up a sign or something if I had a girl in there again.
My roommate, who majored in engineering, got a job with ConEd right out of college. But within a year, he realized he had a calling, he ended up going to seminary school and my buddy Bill is now Father William.
So yeah, I made out with this girl on Father William's bed.
Marquette memories!
Bad visual. I think I'm gonna puke, hey?
Nobody needed to know any of that...I am scarred for life.
That kind of turned me on, especially since I was picturing a hot Russian chick. Then it really fell apart.

Can you blame him? There are some things you cannot 'un-see'

That's why it's called the Holy See.
Y'all are funny.
So the idea of a college guy and college girl making out, with hands all over each other, is totally shocking, huh?
Maybe Father William isn't the only one who should have gone the clergy route.
Oh, and she wasn't a hot Russian chick, but she was cute enough. And tall. Tallest girl I ever dated, nearly 6 feet, same as me.
I know ... that last paragraph really made some of you sick. And now I'm gonna go for the kill:
We held hands sometimes!

Nothing shocking about the story... we all have our own. But without pictures, we're forced to imagine the scene (whether voluntarily or involuntarily), so apparently it's either our image of you with someone hand's in your pants, how we think you define "cute enough" for a Russian chick, or the implication that whatever occurred was enough to drive a man to seminary.
Hot Russian girl? I pictured a Russian girl with a slight mustache wearing a babushka.

Man, I got a hard time wrappin' my noodle 'round LXXXII's fairy tales, ai na?
She wasn't Russian. The class was Russian.
But I am laughing out loud at the way y'all's imaginations are runnin' wild.
About that class ...
As a Journalism major back then, we had to take 2 years of a foreign language. For some reason I still don't know, I chose Russian over something that might have actually been useful in my career, Spanish.
Anyway, my freshman year it was pretty fun and the instructor was an American with a great sense of humor. I got an A my first semester and a B my second semester.
My sophomore year, the instructor was a old Russian guy who had the sense of humor of a doorstop. The class was drudgery. I didn't give two shytes about it and he didn't take attendance, so I usually didn't bother going. Most of the grade was based on translating crap he gave us to read, and I'd get the assignments from that girl or another friend. I got a C/D in Russian III.
In Russian IV, my second semester sophomore year, I completely tuned out. The girl helped me a little but not enough to put me in severe danger of flunking. (I guess maybe if I was studying instead of canoodling, I might have done a little better.) I turned in my final paper and it was a disaster.
The instructor called me and told me to meet him in his office. I thought he was gonna tell me I flunked, which would have meant I'd have had to take the damn class again my second semester junior year -- a fate worse than death.
I showed up and he told me: "The only way for you to do better than a D is to take a verbal exam and do well on it."
I said: "So, if I don't take this exam, I only get a D?"
He said: "That's right."
I slapped my open palm on his desk and said: "OK ... I'll take the D!" I turned around, walked out and never saw him again.
That D was as good as an A+ to me!
Oh, and BTW, that girl and I broke up right near the end of the semester and I hardly ever saw her again, either.
Dasvidanya, y'all!

I think I've seen this movie before, only the professor was a woman, and she wasn't a great actor.

When writing that up, I purposely used the word "verbal" instead of "oral"!
Tonight is a basketball game. We need to stop comparing sports to actual armed conflicts.

Agreed.
I've always hated the "sport as war" analogy.
I'm pretty sure Parisians don't care very much about tonight's Marquette-Belmont game.

Bump. Belmont controlled the tempo and hit their shots. MU shot lousy from 3.

Exactly. I think all who know me agree that I appreciate the difference between France last night and our little basketball game.

Yeah, but to be fair, you kind of have to agree with her, unless you favor the couch ;)
Da power of da poosay, hey?
