Coming to Brookfield.
Now if we can just add an In-N-Out Burger, a legit deep dish pizza (Gino's would be my preference, but wouldn't hate Lou's or Giordano's), and get global warming to get rid of 90% of winter and add that to summer, this would be the greatest city ever!

Nailed it, but it's still better than anything in the Milwaukee market.

When I last had it probably a year and a few months ago it was still great. And there's really nothing in Milwaukee that provides anything similar to what Portillo's has, so this is definitely a big win.

I find that funny in the interesting sort of way cause Gino's is my absolute least favorite of the 3 and it's not even close.
Right by my house, too! A Cubs victory tonight would be even better news. I am totally with ChitownSpace on the pizza -- Gino's is better than anything we have up here (other than Pizzaman thin crust) — but it's Lou's all the way and it's now even close! Highlight of my upcoming weekend of daughter's soccer tourney in Schaumburg is the team meal at LMs.
I always thought Gino's was 1 but pretty much the same as Lou's at 2, and Giordano's a fairly distant 3, but still pretty dang good.
Recently I have only really eaten at Giordano's, so it's been a few years since Gino's and Lou's. If I remember correctly, one has a sauce that doesn't really have very big pieces of tomato chunks in it, while the other seemed to have a sauce with almost entire slices of tomato in it? If this is the case, which was which? I don't like tomatoes, so I remember that being the difference in which one I liked better, and I thought it was Gino's that did not have the big pieces of tomato in the sauce.
Big time jacked over this. Cannot wait for them to open. Best part is nearby the crib.

Give Pizzeria Scotty (http://www.pizzeriascotty.com/index.php) a try. Their Chicago Pan style pizza is awesome, and I'm partial to the Pepperoni Supreme toppings. If you get an order of their Deep Fried Garlic Bread Sticks you'll be hooked.
It's not as good as Lou Malnati's, but better than Giordano's (imo).

Yeah, In-n-Out's not happening. It's completely family owned, no franchising, and the family is not particularly interested in expanding this far east.
Lou has better sausage patty, but Gino has better crust.
Toss up for me.

I've actually been to that Gino's. When I would have nights out at the camp I worked at in Burlington, my dad would come up and we'd drive there for pizza. Honestly better than some of the Gino's joints in Chicago. Wonder if it has to do with amount of people.

Even though I think the name is kind of lame I agree about Pizzaria Scotty being pretty good including the Chicago pan style. Our go to is still Marco's on 27th near College, love that sweet sauce: http://marcospizzamilwaukee.com/

Gepetto's in Oak Park used to make a good deep dish back in the day. Legs, are they as good as I rember!

I live close to a Malnati's and a Pizano's. Prefer the latter.
Pequod's in Chicago on Clybourn kicks all the other deep-dish pizzas' arses. (I think there's another Pequod's in Morton Grove or Skokie, too, but that's it.)
Mmm. Mouth watering as I think about it from here in N.C., where there is NO pizza worth eating.

I'm not much of a deep dish fan, but Art of Pizza on Ashland in between Diversey and Belmont is also very good. We discovered it by accident living nearby. Their delivery radius isn't huge, but they can compete with anyone.

They have 2 in Cali and 2 in Arizona I believe, but other than that, everything is Chicagoland. I believe there is a Tampa location opening next year. Wide expansion wasn't so much a goal, the locations opening outside of the Midwest have been to cater to displaced Chicagoans.

Actually, it started out as a mobile hot dog stand in Villa Park (suburbs FTW!). jsglow has actually met Mr. Portillo. He had a great story about the many banks that denied him a $750 loan so it could have running water. Once he was super successful and they came knocking on his door begging for his business, he derived great pleasure in telling them all to go pound sand.
It got bought out by a venture capital firm within the last few years. I don't know if they expanded to California before or after that, but my guess is that they opened there first because of all the Chicago transplants that live out there that apparently couldn't get a decent hot dog to save their lives.

Very cool story and thanks for sharing. I knew some of the history but your post made a bigger fan of the joint. I am going to have to watch myself and not overdue once it opens.

Yes.
The private equity firm that bought Portillo's has made it clear they plan to expand Portillo's into a much larger chain, probably akin to Culver's, which is now in 20+ states. I wouldn't be surprised to see Portillo's expand throughout the midwest fairly quickly.
I live in Chicago and enjoy Portillo's. Their hotdogs and Italian beef are good, and the chopped salad is excellent. But it isn't as amazing as some people make it seem. It is one of many decent choices in the "fast casual" market.
As for the Chicago pizza debate, of the big 3, Gino's is my favorite. However, there are many independent pizza places in Chicago that are better than the "Big 3" for deep dish. Pequod's and JB Alberto's immediately come to mind.

It was Boston Chicken back then. Whole place couldn't have been more than 300 square feet. Carryout only. Had the decor of a grade school cafeteria line.

Same with pinks hotdogs-family owned since 1939, and probably wouldn't want to expand this Far East either. Big west coast following. On my top 5 places I have to hit when in Vegas-outside of planet Hollywood. Pastrami burrito dog and the bacon burrito dog are killers
Since we are on the subject of eating establishments, Sunday morning, Mrs. C and I went to grab some breakfast and do some grocery shopping at a brand new HyVee. Holy cow, was the brunch good! Just fantastic. I mean top quality. The prime rib, carved to order, salmon, shrimp cocktail, the omelet station, the eggs benedict....
They also run a bottomless bloody mary deal on Sundays. $10 for all you can drink. They make their bloodies with Zing Zang. Included in the price are free toppings.....shrimp, thick cut candied bacon, pepperoni, pepperjack cheese, and an assortment of veggies for the vegan crowd.
At least I can rest easy knowing that Portillo's isn't going to rip off my "Milwaukee Dog" recipe:
Benny's "Milwaukee Dog"
Everything good about Chicago (kosher beef dog, celery salt, onions, tomatoes, pickle, sport peppers, poppy seed bun) with much less pollution (regular relish, not the radioactive stuff) and none of the pretentiousness (you want ketchup, done; you want deli mustard, done; you want none, done).

Still going strong and not bad--but my local go to pizza is Armand's. New place Forno Rosso on Harlem near Diversy is excellent for the opposite of the deep dish experience--wafer thin crust - Neapolitan style - in brick fired oven (1,000 degrees)--takes about 90 seconds to fire up a pie.

My Pizzeria Scotty experiment went pretty well. The deep fried garlic breadsticks were definitely a hit. The Chicago style pizza was very good as well. I prefer the crisper, buttery crust of Malnati's vs. the more doughy version at Scotty. The sauce was outstanding. Definitely will go back and appreciate the recommendation. Always good to try something new.
I'm going to try to go out to the Brookfield location Friday night. I'm wondering how long of a wait there will be. The thing that makes me hopeful that it won't be long is that all the locations in the Chicago area are always packed anyways and it moves along just fine.

The ordering system they have at Portllo's is a thing of beauty. Both inside and outside, I have never waited an unreasonable amount of time no matter how long the line is. It is a Six Sigma wet dream.

Agreed. The efficiency is great. Hopefully it's just as efficient in Brookfield and the crowds aren't too crazy. I don't think it will be, but wouldn't be shocked if it was.
I lost my mind on a recent trip and ordered the French Dip at Friday's, hoping it was at least a little like Portillo's.
It sucked the big one, was full of fat and gristle, and I ended up eating about an eighth of the sammich. I should have complained and demanded my money back but I was road-weary.
All it did was make me long for Portillo's all the more!!!!!!

LOL - Fortunately, not even close. BMI = 22.0. Moderation is the key.
Maybe I am just spoiled because I have lived within a 10-minute drive of a Portillo's for the last 28 years, but I don't get what the big deal is. It is good, but certainly not worthy of its cult status.
It's just like the whole Krispy Kreme obsession a few years back. When I was a kid, there was a Krispy Kreme literally next store to my Catholic grade school. It was simply where we went to get donuts after church, and nothing else. Years later, I found the amazingly long lines at their new Chicago locations to be highly amusing.
I hope Portillo's doesn't suffer the same long-run fate.

Yeah the Krispy Kreme thing is kinda funny. I first had some in Nashville around 1990 when I was in law school, and thought they were pretty good, but not exceptional.
Fast forward to 2003 at the FF in New Orleans - on one corner outside Jackson Square was Cafe du Monde; on another was a brand new Krispy Kreme. My wife and I walked right into CdM and had a great order of hot, fresh beignets...and looked on in amusement at the long line to get into KK.

Agree totally about Krispy Kreme.
Portillo's ... during the 16 years we lived in Chicago, we went there maybe 15-20 times. It wasn't very convenient (our nearest one by far was downtown) but it was very delicious. Going there required effort and was a bit of a "treat."
We've been out of Chicago for 6 years and haven't had a decent beef sammich since, so I probably romanticize Portillo's a bit. If I still lived there and three opened up within a 10-minute drive, yes, the "specialness" would be gone.
BTW, if you live in an area that has Houston's restaurants, or vacation where there is one, they have an incredible French dip sammich. It is prime rib, very lean and sliced thin, and the au jus is wonderful. Of course, it costs about 4-5 times as much as a Portillo's beef sammich does!
Al's Beef. None finer.

I frequently went to the location Clark and Ontario. The food was good, but not really worth the long lines at lunch hour. I eventually migrated to the Rosebud where they had a great $5 burger special at lunch. Would enjoy going there and having a burger on a hot summer day and watching the US Open or British Open golf on the big screen.

Augustino's granddaughter graduated from Marquette in 2014 and is friends with our daughter. We've long said Auggie should open a location on campus. Jimmy John's, Subway and Cousin's would fold like cheap tents. Fantastic deli sandwiches.
It's human nature to treasure novelty and things that are difficult to obtain.
That said, portillos is good, but not amazing.
Many independent shops that do it better. I highly recommend Ricobene's on the south side.
Portillo's chocolate cake and eclair cake are both fantastic, as is their cake shake. But all 3 are very rich. I love their strawberry smoothie as well.

Many years ago, my friend was the regional director for KK. I took my boys and the neighbor kid to a new store opening. My friend treated them to all the donuts they could eat. 3 dozen plus donuts later, I drove the boys home with them having the biggest sh1t eatin' grin.

I don't know what Crisco is, but can it really be that much cheaper than Krispy Kremes? I think I paid like $6.75 for a dozen Krispy Kremes the last time I went.
If you eat them while they're fresh and hot they're fantastic. If you let them get cold and soggy they're horrible.
Has anybody had Portillo's ribs? They advertised them as having some award in Chicago, not sure what though.

The KK-branded stuff in the grocery stores and gas stations is crap. But I'd take that over Crisco and sugar any day of the week.

Krispy Kreme is good stuff. People might not realize they are made from taters.
I will admit that while living abroad for so many years Krispy Kreme is one of the things I missed. Right up there with Q and corn-fed American beef.

Mettawa (first one south of the border). Not sure if New Berlin's in a different "territory" (despite essentially being 60 +/- miles away)... purchasing is very provincial and boundaries are arbitrary, so not only do you might have a different ship day, your bellies may be sourced from a different supplier.
It never ceases to amaze me talking to my step-brother-in-law about Costco's supply chain and logistics.

They take a week to cure, but you won't be disappointed.
After a good coating of my secret recipe dry rub, I slapped that thing on the smoker Friday afternoon and let it sit over cherry wood until midnight at about 180-195F. Then I finished it off in the oven at 210F overnight. Fu%K you, Folgers... walking downstairs in the morning to that aroma would have made Ghandi hungry. The thing essentially fell apart, which is exactly what I was going for, and 10 lbs of belly turned into 3 lbs after the family party on Saturday... it probably would have been gone completely had I not run out of pretzel rolls.

Agreed. Pluse since Dick & Sharon sold, I feel the quality has gone down. Beef sandwich from there used to be consistently good, now half the time there's no flavor or barely any beef on the sandwich.
Would be curious what people's favorite beef sandwich places are. Of the bigger names, I think Johnnie's is the best. Al's is unique (not great or terrible), Mr. Beef is a bad sandwich.
I guess I have to pay more attention to my surroundings. Then again, aside from Urlacher and Electra, I don't know who any of these people are.

Rosati's is actually two competing franchises, both with the same name, two different websites, fairly different pizza. We have both near my house, one time my wife mistakenly ordered from the one we didn't like, we both looked at each other surprised when it was a totally different pizza from what we expected.
I honestly don't know how to tell them apart, other than the one that I like is really good.

My favorite is the Dennis Farina autographed picture. He died before the Rockford location even opened.

I guess it depends on what you're comparing it to. If you understand that you're going to a fast food joint and not an extravagant high level supper club or something it's pretty dang good. Is a burger from there good compared to an Oscar's Pub burger? Of course not. But if you compare the burger to other like burgers (fast food), it's pretty high up there. I'd put it on par with the likes of Culver's or In N Out but worse than a Kopp's. Their Italian beef is pretty much solid for any type of restaurant, fast food or not. And hot dogs are pretty much a food that you'll only find at a fast food restaurant. Their fries alone I wouldn't say are good, fast food or not, but add the cheese sauce and they become solid fast food. Their shakes, smoothies, and desserts are all solid, in my opinion. But again, that's for a fast food setting. Compare that to a Simma's Bakery and of course the dessert compares horribly. But compare it to a Culver's shake and it holds its own, in my opinion.

London offers cosmopolitan fare.
Despite what people say about British cuisine, they're referring to native dishes but not the available food stops and restaurants that can be had throughout the city which are accessible and delicious.
One word: Nando's. If you're in Chicago, you may have already had it.

Any comments on their ribs? I make my own quite often and they are very very good. And yes, sometimes they end up In the smoker. So for me to order ribs from an outside establishment, they are up against a pretty high standard
Ya'll want a secret I just learned-your fav rib rub, onions and Guinness beer(this is the new ingredient I just picked up) in an aluminum foil covered pan-oven at 225 for 3-4 hours or until the meat is just pulling away from the bones. Grill, meat side down until crispy as you like, turn 'em over and slather with Stubbs original bbq sauce and you will wet yourself eating these bad boys
Note:you'll need a long/wide pancake spatula to handle them as they are pretty tender and will fall apart a little on you until you get them crisped and sauced up

They are Midwest suburban style ribs. Pretty ordinary. Probably steamed until the meat loses all taste.

Twin Anchors or bust when it comes to Chicago ribs

Um, move this crap into the "which smoker to buy" thread.
Also, I have never had their ribs. We have an amazing BBQ place not far from our house where we go if we are jonesing for some smoked meat.
Smoked meats can be discussed anytime, anywhere.
Fat Willys when it comes to Chicago ribs. No suburban crap

Ron Swanson agrees with this analysis.

Yep. Flip flopped after reconsidering the power of the beef.

Portillo's for me, two weeks from tomorrow! Can't wait.
Don't go to a Portillos that just opened. Really rude help. Poorly planned. Not a good look

I didn't have that experience at all during the times I've gone to the new Greenfield location that opened this spring. Everything seemed very professional and organized.

We went to the soft opening of their 50th store in Woodbury, MN. on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Free food, free T-shirts, and free chocolate cake to go. You had to have signed up for their email list and when pre-registering for the soft opening you picked a half hour time slot to visit with your golden ticket that came in the mail. It was very busy but was really no different than any other Portillo's experience in the past. Half of the workers were brought in from Chicago to work the opening and train the other half who were new local employees.
What rudeness and chaos happened when you were there?

Is it because you asked for chili and got indignant when they didn't have it?

Went again last night order was wrong and hot dogs had to have been made 15 min before we got food in DT. Big dog buns were mush.

I went on day 2 and, aside from the 45 minute wait, everything seemed fine. orders were correct and food was hot. Pro tip: park across the street and walk up
Cabelas lot.
