Ha-ha what did you expect?
Way too dramatic a national anthem for a country like Iceland. I was expecting something from the Frozen soundtrack.
Marotta sure is a short ballplayer.
No idea what to expect from this game. It's a professional team, but not sure how they compare to guys like Fischer, Duane, and Ellenson, who you would think would all be stars if they played in the lower European leagues.
EDIT: Starters are Fischer, Henry, Duane, Sandy, and Traci.

Sandy's release point is still too low. Traci Carter is going to be good.
Always nice to see officials in yellow t-shirts and shorts.
I'm digging the Marquette Golden Bears.
Some sloppy passes in traffic so far. Worked well on the Carter assist, but otherwise just turning it over. Wondering how the range is impacting the team. Need to close out further, also shooting from further. 0/3 for us from 3 so far, I believe Haukar (used to this line) is 2/3.
EDIT: 3/4 now for Haukar from deep.
Traci has looked pretty solid.

I'm liking the new TC already.
Burn those shoes. Bad luck and ugly.
Very poor passing.
Very ticky tack calls, but you have to move your feet.
Is "The Philly Kid" a good nickname for TC?
Are the announcers coming in each on separate channels? I'm only wearing one headphone and can only hear one guy talking.
We're basically losing to my rec league team right now.
Henry needs to move his feet a lot better on D.
Refs gotta let them play a bit. Of course there's going to be contact, it's preseason. Gotta let some of it go.

Yeah. It's weird. And they talk at the same time a lot.
Traci Carter looks good so far. Has some range, can pass in traffic, keeps his head up at all times, nice handle, and good ability to pick up speed. Still making some freshman mistakes, but he looks very solid. Also has a very college-ready physique. Surprised how strong he looks for a true freshman.

Is this Creighton? why take a two when you can take a three?
Haukar clearly the better team so far, which makes sense since we've never played together. Way too much iso ball for MU
30 to 23. But the scoreboard reads 28 to 22
Traci by far has been the bright spot. However, I have loved Luke's defensive help
I'd say that Luke has been the most solid. Nothing exceptional but making some nice passes and good power moves under the basket. Playing like he's been there.
Marquette's offense struggling to get the ball down low without Fischer. Haukar definitely packing it in. We'll need to be able to hit threes, because I have a feeling with those two down low we'll be pounding the paint quite a bit.
Free throw shooting not helping us either, I believe we're 5/10, splitting every opportunity.

OK guys, what's the score. I am in an airplane high above Wyoming right now.
Trailing 43-37 at the half, but Marquette finishes the half on a 10-4 run to cut the lead in half. Included a 6-point trip that saw Duane score on a drive, steal the ensuing inbound and score again, draw a foul, then after missing the FT (ugh, 6/15 in the half?) Luke got a putback.
Nice flurry there at the end of the half. Could be winning if we knocked down free throws.
Henry looks a bit overmatched. Traci looks pretty good. Duane looks good.
Defense needs improvement. It got better towards the end, but way too many open layups off of backdoor and flex cuts for a 10 minute stretch there.
A little surprised Heldt hasn't seen the floor yet.
Off topic-
For you long toothed fellas
Was John Ellenson a good shooter/physically tough?
Who's #32?
Not disappointed in Henry so far but he doesn't quite look like any of those guys you'd see at Kentucky. I knew he wasn't gonna be Trey Lyles or Jahlil Okafor but he seems to be struggling with the physicality down low.
Thanks Brew
Haven't been able to watch the game being stuck at work, but it looks like people should've listened to me when I said Traci Carter would be just fine running the show. The kid is very good. Had he not been injured for the entire most important evaluation period, he would've been a top 60 kid.

Believe it or not he's actually really improved in the last year.
Considering the first time playing together as a team, the European ball/rules, not a terrible showing. Improved as they got closer to the end of the half.
Really don't like the lack of air conditioning in the building. Wet spots, players are slipping.
Alright here we go. Big 3 Sandy.

Traci. Confident, good ball handler, passer, knocked down a couple of threes. Good instincts on defense. Has lost his man a couple of times off the ball but also some steals leading to breaks
It was a 19-4 run that gave Marquette a 46-43 lead after trailing by 12, but Haukar answers with a 6-0 run of their own.
I echo the rest of the board in saying that Traci Carter is really impressing me.
We're playing much better.
Anyone have a sense of how much JjJ has played? Haven't seen him but once.

Win or lose, I have to say I am very impressed with the way the team looks. Ellenson will be an absolute beast if he stays longer than one year.
Come on MU, fourth quarter rally!
JJJ really not good enough to be ahead of sandy or anim? Cmon he was ranked so high
The Engine, Traci Carter. I like that one!
Gotta say, I love Ellenson running the break. Also like Traci's nickname. This international announcer is great, kind of annoying that Broeker interrupts him sometimes.
I know I'm a broken record but this floor is a joke.
This game should be stopped.
How long are the quarters?
Looking forward to watching this at home after work. Sounds like people are fairly pleased with the play so far. Also sounds like we are playing a team that was worth the trip in terms of competition level.
So far it sounds like Traci and to a lesser extent Cohen are playing above expectations, Hank and JJJ below expectations, and the others about where they are expected?
This floor is bad, hope we get out without any injuries.
Best thing bout this game so far is, Henry Ellenson's behind the back dribble ;D
This floor is absolutely awful. Watching Luke go down like that had me really worried. I sincerely hope the other gyms they play in are air conditioned. This is ridiculous. Someone's going to get hurt.
End the game. This is ridiculous
That's ridiculous. That's all we need is for someone to tear an ACL or something on this floor.

Henry has really improved in the 2nd half. Agree with the rest.
Luke goes down hard on a breakaway. Looks like he is okay. Fell on flat his back but they're saying he didn't hit his head.
Just saw JjJ's shot after that whistle. It looked pretty good.

Outstanding. I have no doubt he'll be one of our 3 best players this year (with Luke and Duane, and with Traci being really solid at PG). He's still 18, he'll have a bad half and a bad game here or there, but he is very legit.

Also regarding the floor, I play on Mondays at a gym that isn't air conditioned and when it gets slick playing defense is the worst. You trust absolutely nothing and get blown by so easily. So tentative. I'd guess some of the players on each team feel the same way.

EDIT: Missed the FT
Ok Henry running the break is officially amazing!!!
DUANNE!!! THREE!!
Duane with a block that is recovered by Henry. Ellenson leads the break and finds Wilson on the outlet for a three to bring MU within 74-73. 4:35 left to play.
Duane is going to be good.
We Are!
Looking like some good heart being shown in the last minutes here, especially since they are apparently playing hockey!
Duane with another three! MU trails 74-73 with 4:35 left in the game.
Ellenson looks like he's gonna be an and-1 machine. Good speed to drive it up the floor and get contact and the length to finish after.
Cut it to 1, with a 3 by DW.

Haukar answers Duane with a three of their own, but he fires back to make it 77-76. 4:14 left to play, Marquette ball.

Nice to see MU having no problem with the 24 second clock. They can score the ball - unlike their issues last year.
MU up one with 3:22 left.
All things considered win or lose, I'm very happy with the team. Jet lag, wet floor, first time playing together, EU rules and a 24 second clock and still playing competitively.
Tied, two to play
This team looks to have a lot of potential. Duane could be a star this year. He's good. Henry is just solid inside, as is Fischer. And Traci Carter looks excellent for a freshman. Strong finish in this game, though Haukar just tied it at 80. Good game, planning to watch it again. Free throws have been brutal, if we were hitting even 70% we'd be handily ahead.
Long rebounds have really killed us. They've led to at least 5-6 threes

Marquette with their second big run of the game. Leading 87-80 with 29 seconds to play after Haukar looked in control just 5 minutes ago. This is a 22-6 run for Marquette. Duane and Henry have been immense down the stretch. Absolutely huge.

Wally fouled out in the third quarter. All ticky tack fouls. Solid on defense. Nothing on offense
This team might be really frickin good. Carter looked comfortable at PG, and wasn't afraid to shoot the three. That alone is going to open up things in the middle. Luke looked healthy and strong. The baby hook is a beautiful thing. Duane is the captain of this team, and considering his a RS SO, that makes me giddy. Henry is going to be special (did he play the whole game?), I will just leave it at that. Sandy looked quite a bit stronger.
All in all, I was quite impressed, especially considering no Hannif, who I think will be one of better players.

Agreed. They're a well prepared, pro team. This took an outstanding late effort by the Warriors.
Thoughts...
- Duane was a star today. Hopefully he can put together a season like this, he was a bit mercurial last season. We need him to be consistently good.
- Henry is a talent. The word for his offense is smooth. Needs to box out better, but he does a good job of controlling rebounds. Uses his arms well to secure the ball high.
- Traci Carter was very good, the bright spot for me. I liked the nickname the foreign announcer gave him, "The Engine". Feels apropos.
- Free throws were horrible. But improved as the game went on.
- The floor was awful. Seriously dangerous out there. Felt the game was slipping away in more ways than one before that late run.
- Hard to know how significant this is. Haukar looked competitive, but it seems like they're a mid-level Icelandic team. Not exactly a marquee league. Good for the team, but hard to say how good.
- Second half was much better. Marquette gave up a lot of back door cuts, second chances, and open threes early. Improved quite a bit later. After losing the first two quarters, they tied in the third and really dominated the last 5 minutes of the fourth.
- Sandy looks improved. Still starts his shot too low, but hit some threes, showed his strength, and was overall fairly effective.
- Fischer was solid. Yeoman's effort today. Him and Hank will be a load together.
- Of the bench players, Sacar Anim looks like he'll get early minutes, possibly ahead of JJJ and Wally. Had some freshman mistakes, but plays hard, decent defense, and lots of energy.

Lets fu**in' goooo...is it November yet?
+1

Any thoughts on Wally at all?
How is the other team? Better than some BE teams we'll see?
Right after Wojo got extremely fired up and you could hear him yelling on the broadcast, Wally was the one who came out most fired up. On the next play he had defensive intensity and was scurrying around everywhere. Got a few cheap foul calls but at the least looks like a great energy guy. He had one shot around the basket that was a bit wild.
This is how I expect the Belmont game to go.

Spot on. And let's remember that we've had 10 practices. This team can be pretty good. The talent level ls light years ahead of last year. The ONLY position that may drop off somewhat is Carlino > Sandy. The other 4 are significantly stronger even here in August.
I'm not gonna get too excited one way or another. First time meshing for the guys.
Carter looked more than solid against mediocre white dudes, which is good.
I thought most of the comments were spot on. I wouldn't give up on JJJ just yet. He's going to have some good games this year. I'd bet on it. Hopefully he can be more consistent throughout the year and be a major contributor.
I'm not worried about the free throws just yet. Let's not also forget they played in a hot/wet gym, new basketball, and a 24 second shot clock. That's some adjustment for a team that has only a few practices under their belt.
I don't feel that team was very good but we definitely have LOTS of potential and good way to start the season. Especially seeing how some of the guys stepped up in crunch time. But I am still going into season with tempered expectations.

This.
The encouraging thing I take from this is they were gassed by the end of it, and still closed strong. Henry looked like he was gonna pass out in the fourth quarter but kept making plays.
It's also really good that they played a team that could shoot it. Exposed their flaws on defense, which led to offensive boards. The coaches can point these things out on film easily.
Anyone know when the G-town Haukar game is? Livestream? Would be interesting to see how likely tourney team matches up with haukar.

Agreed, love the one on one defensive pressure but rotations were rough when they got bumped off of screens. Also, this is the tallest MU team in decades, there's should not be that many offensive rebounds.
I thought Haukar played VERY well and is a talented, together team. Sure they're not full of top 100 American recruits but the fact that this group had been together so long had them playing Euro ball really well. They made very few mistakes and capitalized on our's. This was no gimme game and the Warriors really had to dig deep. Well earned victory and great building block.

Well if we end up playing ASU we can count on at least one good game from JJJ

At one point we ran out a lineup with Duane (6'2"), Anim (6'5"), Sandy (6'6"), Ellenson (6'10"), and Fischer (6'11"). That's some great size.
I also thought Haukar was a solid team. Not elite, but to compare them to our level of play, the kind of team that gets into the tournament as a 13/14 seed and gives some higher seed hell for 40 minutes. Great shooting team, spaced the floor well, and great on the back door cuts. Very fundamentally solid, though they did run out of gas at the end.

So they're Davidson?

Belmont perhaps?
And one of the best things about the game was that they came back, twice. They got some momentum, created stops and kept it going.
Overall, I've been hopeful for this season, given the level of individual talent on the team. This game, even accounting for lots of factors, gives me more optimism, given the way they played as a team (despite plenty of flaws on defense).

Both of those feel like good comparisons. Again, this is just going by the eye test (which I hate) but they did the little things right and didn't beat themselves. Teams like that can be tough for anyone to deal with when they are hitting their shots.
what defenses were used? Zone or some man-to-man?
Golden Bears.
Love it.
Would fit because the other Jordan brand school, Cal, are the Golden Bears.

I never saw them play zone. Not that they didn't, but I just didn't recall seeing it.

I think they looked better than a competitive low-major.

I agree. Don't think they played any zone, but I could be mistaken.
No surprise, really, given that Wojo would like to play more man to man, and Hauker is a 3-shooting team. Needed to play tighter in their faces to prevent open looks. I think if we had started in zone, we would've needed to switch to man very quickly.

Yeah, we were slow enough (especially early) closing out on threes, the last thing we needed was to give them space to just shoot over the zone, because they could have and would have.
No zone that I saw. Our defensive rotations still need improvement but that's to be expected. When we were late, Haukar buried the shot until the very end when they're legs gave out.
We played man to man exclusively. Haukar played mostly man but I think in the 3rd quarter switched to a 2-3 zone which I thought we handled pretty well....way better than we've handled it the last couple of seasons any way.
The other thing that has me giddy about this games results.....this is the type of team we can expect to play in Madison. This style was probably the one I thought we'd have the most trouble with. Haukar even got all the ticky tack calls the 12 year olds were calling, so it definitely felt like it was Madison....ya know, with the backdoor stuff and all.

Mostly it was on late close outs by Heldt, Ellenson, and Fischer, who aren't use to that type of thing. A lot of issues on ball screens (switch vs stay). That'll take some time to learn.
It's good to see we have some semblance of an offense and defense installed at this point of the season. :o ;D

Outstanding. Sounds like this game alone may have been worth the entire experience. Here's to hoping for 3 more competitive games (with safer floors).
I'll stick to my 7 seed prediction. But after actually watching this game, I might be moving it up.
Maybe I'll bump it up to 6. We will finish somewhere between 3-5 in the BE, but I think by the end of the season we'll be the 2nd best team in the BE.
