Title: DePaul Game Thread
Post by: real chili 83 on December 31, 2014, 03:45:32 PM
Time to kick the door down on the new Big East season and tromp the Blue Hairy Wet Cats.

Yeah, going out on a limb here....early call is Steve for SOTG....hometown game and all.

If he isn't in the running for it, it's reason for concern for the rest of the season.

GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!

FS1 announcer - "It's all about the big fella for Marquette."  That's something I don't think I ever heard before ASU (and probably not accurate yet in this game).  Still feels funny.  That being said FIRE IT UP LUKE.  Time to dominate.

EDIT: Also, don't foul.

Sloppy game so far. Too many threes early in the shot clock, but we've had a lot of looks just not falling. Love the rebounding though.

Feel good about this. Keep Luke and Duane out of foul trouble and we'll be fine. Tons of missed threes hurt, but can't complain about a 6-point road lead.

So instead an educated guess or looking at a stat sheet, you immediately come on the message board and emphasize your complaints with swear words. Good job.

Why does it seem like Depaul always has the hardest rims in the world.  The sound of the ball when it hits the rim is horrendous and nothing will bounce in.
Title: Re: DePaul Game Thread
Post by: nyg on December 31, 2014, 04:53:26 PM
2 for 13 from three. Most of them wide open, yet not going in.  Thank goodness this is against Depaul......

Fischer with two fouls, yet Taylor not stepping up against the nobody inside for Depaul.  Taylor is 1 for 4 with three rebounds.   He just can't make those inside shots and if this was Villanova, it would be ugly.

Depaul without Hamilton is not very good and this game should not be within a tenpoint spread.  We'll see what happens after adjustments, but will be a barometer for things to come.

Real intelligent post Studley. If "helll" is a swear word, then the bible should be banned. I looked at the stat sheet, Duane is our leading scorer, but then again, you wouldn't notice that as you are too busy falsely accusing me o something that you have no  knowledge about.

Total different team with Fischer, not Taylor.  MU throwing inside and Fischer either looks for shot or passes out for open shot or player cutting to basket.  Wojo went ballistic at that timeout and probably said cool it with the threes. Very nice b-ball skills for Fischer.  And Carlino misses another three.........and JJJ misses another three....... and JJJ with another miss three.......Guess not.

Wow!  I had picked 10 wins in the BE wins poll, but would cut that in half right now.  DePaul had a 6 game losing streak and we had a 4 game winning streak. They were also missing their big guy today.  Not a good way to celebrate New Year's Eve.

My favorite part of watching Marquette is Derrick Wilson handling the ball 75 percent of the time and then giving it to someone to throw up a wild shot at the end of the shot clock. I wonder if he's proud of being the starting PG for the worst two-year stretch at Marquette in like 30 years. His eligibility can't run out fast enough for me.

Also, they triple Luke and he dishes it out to Carlino. Instead of Carlino finding an open guy he just dribbled the air out of the ball. I don't understand what the hell just transpired over those last 10 minutes. But I will say, that charge call was the game. Instead of Garrett with 4 fouls and two free throws. We had our most important guy go out of the game. From there the wheels really came off.

That was a historically bad shooting performance. I'm curious to know if we even made one of the many wide-open shots that DePaul granted us in the first half. Seriously, they came out and played no defense at all in the first half. I know we don't have a great team this year, but even we should have won this game by 30 points.

I thought Duane should have had way more opportunities, he looked good with the chances he got in the first half.

Steve had good games in stretches against teams that zoned and did not game plan for him as a freshman.  He would come in, find open spots make some bunnies, get some offensive rebounds.   He never had any responsibility.   The difference now is that MU needs a lot more from him.

Hey, to play like this it takes a team to loose. We have players who do not protect the ball, who shoot even though they can not hit a barn, passes that go to the other team, play no D, throw into a double teamed post, have Teve bring up the ball and have him shoot a three. All of this against the second worst team in the BE. You ask who is the worst? I leave it to your imagination.

DePaul is really bad. The worst team we will play for the balance of the season. They played without their leading scorer and rebounder. While technically a road game, our fans outnumbered theirs by a lot. We had a 12 point lead when we stopped attacking on offense. Then when they cut it to seven Wojo panicked and switched out of the zone. Two lay ups later (surprise, surprise) it's a 3 point game. Down the stretch we looked totally disorganized and out of control. They weren't lucky, didn't hit some miracle shot to beat us. They took it from us and had the game in hand at the end. Some of our guys lost their poise (most notably Matt) and Wojo had a shell shocked look on his face on the sidelines.

In the recent past MU teams have usually bounced back after giving away one like this. Here's hoping that we do again this time.

Seems like a good kid, but has no business being a starting PG for any team that has aspirations of going to the tournament. He's painful to watch 95% of the time and although he's played better recently, he's still an offensive liability. I am very excited for him to move on as well! He should be proud though, hes proven hard work with minimal talent can payoff and be rewarded. It just doesn't translate into a winning product on the basketball court. I wish him all the success in the world when he graduates.

+100 right

Derrick is a good kid, just doesn't have what it takes to win against good teams at this level. Last year the team had players to help mask his play, but with no Jamil, Davante, Todd or Jake around. A team with Derrick Wilson playing 38 Minutes at PG with 1 assist, just isn't gonna win many games....

At the Big East level this type of story happens fast "DePaul trailed most of the game with Marquette's largest lead at 49-36 with 11:46 left. From there, DePaul outscored the Golden Eagles 25-9 by forcing eight turnovers for easy transition baskets..."

Turnovers:

Luke - 5 in 21 minutes
Duane - 3 in 29 minutes
Derrick - 2 in 38 minutes

If you want to blame the loss on late game turnovers, Derrick is NOT your scapegoat.
