Maybe, but we are a different team now that Luke is playing. We'll know what kind of team we have after the first 5 games in conference.

Seriously, they are 2-8. Chris Thomas is shooting 41% from the field, 28% from 3 and 58% from the FT line. He as an assist to TO ratio of around 0.6.
They are a typical SWAC team.
Michigan St. has lived by the 3 this season. Today they were 4-21.

Well for them to be playing in March they have to get past Southern, which I don't think they can. I would also take Tre Lynch from Southern over Thomas.
Also, his numbers are almost identical to last year, so I doubt they are misleading.

Most anything can happen in a conference tourney, so there's certainly a good chance Texas Southern doesn't make the NCAA tourney. However, any decent person would project them to be there (despite being 2-8 today).
For what purpose you'd be taking Tre Lynch I don't know, but you may have him and I'll gladly take Chris.
Thomas' numbers season-to-date are very similar to last year's. Differences include a diff team and a major, major one ---> strength of competition this year is FAR better than a year ago. Let's see how things progress the rest of the year.
I don't mean this in the wrong way, but as others have pointed out you may disagree with me on this, but you are wrong.

Before yesterday, they had one win and 8 double digit losses. They've played a tough schedule, but calling that anything other than an awful loss would be a lie. Texas Southern could run the table in the SWAC and that would still be a bad loss.
The truth lies somewhere in between. TSU may be a SWAC title contender, but they are still a SWAC team. Michigan State isn't as good as they usually are. There's no sugar coating that this is a game they should win 100 out of 100 times.

The SWAC is usually toward the bottom of conference RPI ratings and oftentimes their champion participates in one of the Dayton play in games. Texas Southern may be the best of that bunch, but that simply means it is the top turd on the dungpile.

Thomas may have once been a 5-star recruit, in 2012. Because of legal and academic troubles he went to JC. He greatly underperformed there and no one would touch him. He went to Marshall, and was mediocre at best, got into legal troubles again and had to transfer. He has continued to be mediocre at best at Texas Southern.
Maybe he has the talent to turn it around, but history says he was over-rated or wasted his talent. I can't see how any NBA team would gamble on a mediocre talent at the lowest levels of D1 basketball that is a known character/legal problem.

Because of all that, TSU will contend for the SWAC. But this is a team that lost their last 3 by 91 points. Tough competition? Sure. But no tougher than MSU usually is. The Spartans lost because they aren't as good as they normally are. Tom Izzo hasn't lost a buy game since 2002. Maybe 100/100 is hyperbole, but barely.
Michigan State is down this year. They don't have the quality or experience they have typically had the past 15 years. They were overrated in the preseason and were overrated being in the top-25. They should be a tourney team, but they are more suited for the 9-12 seed lines than the top-4 they are accustomed to.
If this was a typical MSU team, they win this game. That's no disrespect to TSU, it's just that teams like that shouldn't lose to SWAC teams. Just like Marquette shouldn't lose to Omaha. These things happen, but the reason is more about the host than it is the buy opponent.

They were bad matchups. One of the reasons teams lose to buy opponents is not just because they aren't as good as usual (like Michigan State or Marquette early in the season) but because that specific buy opponent can exploit those weaknesses.
Though more hysterical is your failure to read this...

We shouldn't lose that game, MSU shouldn't have lost this game, but there are reasons these losses happened. As I said before, the truth lies somewhere in between. The host teams aren't as good as they usually are, and the teams playing them were at least competent enough to exploit that.

LOLOL! Learn to talk before the game is over. Nova wins by 25. They were projected to win by 27. NJIT is ranked #268 in KenPom for a reason. They suck. As does Michigan, as evidenced in part by the fact that they LOST TO NJIT AT HOME.

Not at all desperate. Never expected NJIT to win but they showed they could play with a top-10 team. They fell off, just like UND last night, but dismissing a team just because you aren't familiar with them is a mistake. Ask Michigan, Michigan State, or Purdue.

This is about being "a typical SWAC team" - you're now trying to change the conversation into something it never was.
They went 3-9 in non-conference. Pulled off a big win against an overrated MSU team that was definitely impressive but not unprecedented for the league. Are they above average for their league? Sure. They're probably going to win the SWAC. But until they win a game (or at least keep it close to the last 2 minutes) in March, or put Chris Thomas in the league (tough ask for a sub-60% FT & sub-30% 3P shooter) there won't be a lot to separate them from other SWAC teams that dominate their league but come up short outside it.

"Dominate their league"... that's what the topic is. "Typical SWAC team." Do you still believe they are a typical SWAC team? And what would change your opinion? If they win a single NCAA tourney game on a particular day in March?
I also am having a hard time boarding the Texas Southern/Chris Thomas bandwagon.

I am a fan of a high-major team. When I watch other games, they are usually high-major games. When you're talking about a SWAC team (or MEAC, or NEC, or America East, or A-Sun) that isn't typical, I don't mean they can pummel a bunch of other low-majors, I mean they would be able to be competitive on a nightly basis in a high-major league. I just don't think Texas Southern is that kind of team. Those teams are very rare, which means for me the standard of a "typical _________ team" is pretty broad.
I don't have the time or initiative to watch all the low-majors, so for me to have my opinion changed, yeah, winning a game on a particular day in March is where I'd start to put the bar. Or having better than a 0.250 winning percentage in non-conference. Or winning their conference games by an average of 30+. If I were a fan of SWAC teams in general, I'm sure my standards would be different. But I'm not, so they aren't. In low-major hoops, the only team that really moves the dial at all for me is Stephen F. Austin. I guess that's where we differ.

It was a late game on a Saturday night - you need real-time updates?
Obviously the loss of Dev Biggs, a HM-transfer, and the injury to Big Chris NBA have hurt the team. When two of your double-digit scorers are out of the lineup, the scenery is a bit different.
Nonetheless Big Chris NBA Prime Time Status Elite played last night after missing time with his ankle injury.
Looking forward to a healthy Chris and team so we can reach the tourney and knock someone off! Go Tigers!!
Big Chris Thomas NBA Status Platinum Elite has been hurt and having a rough go of it. Texas Southern with the DB suspension and Chris being hurt has struggled, but they got another win tonight behind 22p and 10r (5 offensive) by Big Chris Doin Thangs Next Level Type Daily.
The typical SWAC team is now 12-2 in conference and faces off with Alabama St. - also 12-2 - on Saturday. Only Southern is within striking distance of the two conference leaders, but their hopes are mostly faded with a 2 point loss to Alabama St. tonight.
Let's get healthy and in the tournament.. then we can complete this typical SWAC team year with an NCAA "shocker."

Isn't there typically a first place team in the SWAC? So if when you meant not a typical SWAC team, you meant they had a chance to win their conference (which still isn't given with only a couple games left), then I guess you were right. I would have assumed an atypical SWAC team would have easily run the table.
Also, if your idea of an atypical SWAC player and future NBA'er is a guy who is the 2nd best player on his team, then I guess you were also right.
We were just speaking different languages.

I made it clear why they are not a typical SWAC team - it wasn't about winning the conference. It was about a 5-star recruit, a Big Ten transfer, a former Big Ten coach, etc. Now, the Big Ten transfer was out for most of the conference season.. and Big Chris was injured and missed time.. but things may come together beautifully here at the end of the year.
And you can claim Chris is the 2nd best player on his team, but others would disagree.. and say he's the best player in the conference on an objective basis.

"We"?????
Are you a Texas Southern alum?
Our coach Mike Davis was named the conference COY today. Typical!
Also, our women had to brawl with Sourhern's, resulting in a double forfeit. Crazay!
Does Crean take over Texas Southern when he gets fired next year and Mike Davis takes over a falling-apart mid to high major?
We made it! Texas Southern is tourney-bound! We've gone through Chris and Biggs missing time this year and that made things a little tougher.. but things have come together nicely.
Last night we won 90-77 to earn an NCAA tourney bid. Big Chris Essential Nutrients NBA scored 23 points on 60.7 eFG% and 10 trips to the line. 5 rebounds (2 off), 2 blocks, 3 steals, only 1 turnover. Nice work, my man!!
Excited to see who we play next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what kind of crack you are smoking, but usually they need to win their conference tournament to make the NCAAs. Last I checked they are playing in the final today.
edit: Apparently, they are not your typical SWAC team, they may be the first team not to win their conference tournament and not be an at large team, but still be in the tournament. They didn't even punch their own ticket (yet), they got in on a technicality of another team losing.
SWAC also must have a lot of NBA talent, as your lover was the 4th best player today in the SWAC.

You're quite boastful considering a) they haven't done anything yet NCAA tournament speaking, and b) they're "tourney bound" due to both other semifinal teams being ineligible for the NCAA tournament because of being slapped down by the NCAA over academic progress rating (whatever it's called).
ESPNU should pull the plug on today's SWAC title game, what is the point in anyone watching that crap game with the knowledge the winner means nothing.

Does Big Chris make the NBA with an Orating of 95.6? He even dipped in the SWAC from when he was in CUSA. Looks like a high usage, low efficiency horse. Carrie Underwood-like?

Also not much of a shooter. 27% from three and 55% from the line won't be very enticing in a league where athleticism is largely muted because everyone is just as athletic.

The SWAC let NCAA ineligible teams compete in the conference championship? That's dumb.

Yep, I believe the university presidents in the league voted on it.
Injuries, baby! We're feeling better now -- ready & primed for the tourney!!
Hoping for a 2/15 tilt w Becky so we can take down another Big Ten team!!!
Need some "one more year" chants for my guy!!!
