Title: Badger pre-game ideas
Post by: real chili 83 on December 01, 2014, 12:44:01 PM
Going to the Badger game this Saturday.  With it being an early game, what are some recommendations for pre-game festivities?

Btw, my first time at the Bradley Center too.    :o

First time at the BC?  :o :o :o

If you want the classic experience, I'd probably say Goolsby's, though I'm not a huge fan. It will be jam packed with gold and red (probably to the point you won't be able to hold a conversation or hear yourself think) before the game. Buckhead's, Buck Bradley's, and Upper 90 are all sports bar atmospheres before the game within walking distance. Not sure if Upper 90 will have the Premier League on that morning, probably a decent chance.

You could also start on campus and walk. Get a bloody at Sobelman's or hit another campus bar then head down Wells. Should be a decent day Saturday, highs around 40.

I am planning breakfast at 8:00 at the Broken Yolk. From there, wide open for ideas.  Goolsbys was there back in my day too.

Some buddies of mine run the Loaded Slate, always a nice time.  I imagine they will be open early for the game.

I can't believe that you guys aren't giving crap to someone who has 3400 posts, but hasn't been to a home game (any game?) in at least 25 years.

So, what's your excuse, Chili 83?

No good excuse.  I see them every other year at Madison, and went to a number of other away games.

Tried to go to the UW game two years ago, but people wanted $400 - $500 for a set of tickets.  NFW would I pay that much.

Anyone have a suggestion for a good viewing experience downtown/third ward/east side? Our group is too large and prices are a bit too high for the BMO.

Well welcome then '83.  Great idea to start on campus at BroYo.  While chick and I don't do it often anymore because of Courtside Club pre-gaming, I still love the walk down from campus.  I've literally been taking that walk for 45 years or more.  3 years ago we escorted three HS Seniors on that walk to a game as they considered MU and were serenaded by some undergrads chanting 'I'm not that drunk!' as they headed for the BC.  Priceless.

Still as a Senior Chitown?  Usually that's an underclassman gig unless your name is Spencer.  As you may know, my two kids were the very first in the door for Bucky when they were Frosh in 2010 and 2012, respectively.  All I remember saying was 'Be careful and NO alcohol'.

RC is definitely in the plans for Saturday after the game.

Breakfast burrito at the B/Y for breakfast, RC later in the day.

Should make for a fun car ride home on Sunday for Mrs. RC.   :o

Fine Lighthouse.  The 'no alcohol' part was important because they were 18 at the time and I absolutely knew that both MPD and Public Safety would be visiting them regularly through the night.  I think they understood that it was no time to be stupid.

The Bucky game in 2010 was an early start so daughter actually arrived with some Fanatics the night before while the Bucks were still playing.  They got kicked off the corner by the Andy Frans and ended up across the street at the northeast corner of the Arena where they slept out under the sign.  She wasn't actually the first in line but was the first female.  So when security the next day chose the person to do the countdown over the megaphone, it was her.  Two years ago, I believe the same security guy (all the early bird students know him) asked our son to step across the rope to assist Buzz with doughnut handouts, and then enter the building first.  I'll take that legacy 35 years from now.

In 2010 I officially got there around 4 I wanna say. Me and a buddy closed down Buckheads (sophomores with fakes feel so cool) went to George webbs, called another buddy to bring some stuff to us, sat in his car drinking the old four lokos, then got in line.  Didn't really know most the other people and we obviously stood out as a wee bit inebriated so we weren't about to become buddies with many people but we wanted bird cage seats.

Funny thing is I forgot I got my dad and his college roommate tickets to that game, was supposed to sit with them but saw them at half time and to this day have no recollection.

I've only seen it like three times be hyped enough that you needed to get there that early (WI, ND, OSU) for the most part two hours did the trick.

TAMU's line to me after I had a few too many of those "[bagpiper] what did you drink tonight?" Me "just food poisoning" "[bagpiper] you can't eat alcohol"

Now days I shudder at the radioactive stuff college kids drink.

There you go.

Broken Yolk = overrated.  Then again breakfast food in general ain't no good.

Camping out overnight is never worth it.  Sleep in, show up 15 minutes before the door opens, go around to the opposite corner of where all the students line up, watch kids sprinting to try to get into that little section behind the "cheerleaders," (steal it steal it! Take that ball away) and stroll into the row right behind that section while you watch the 95% of the other people who were there hours before you end up filling up the corner sections is the way to go.  Kick the legs up on the railing and relax for a while.

Folks in the Twin Cities... I am leaning toward finding a restaurant/bar near Hopkins HS for the game. Then, right after heading to Hopkins. Henry & Rice Lake are playing Minnetonka at 2:15 pm.

Who else is coming nh?

Hard to go gluten and carb free when making to pilgrimage to RC.  Blondie would turn in her grave.

Speaking of pregame activities, I will be in Bloomington for the Indiana/Savannah State game on Saturday. Any questions for Coach Tan Crean should I happen to run into him?

Thinking about going to Turners for pre-game.

How big of a bar area does it have?  Is it set up well to accommodate a pre-game crowd, or is it more of a sit-down restaurant atmosphere?

Decent size bar area - fairly good size square bar top of steps when you walk up from street entry.  Then restaurant seating on both sides.  Some room for spillage into that.  Guessing it would have as significant pre-game crowd as any other close by.

being that it will be a sellout crowd, if you get to Turners after the bar stools are filled up the bar gets 3-4 deep of folks standing around trying to get served

we never sat at the tables but I'm sure they have wait service

With that being said, that is why I usually go to Trinity, hardly ever a wait, close, enough to walk has trolley service, good service and decent food

I really like Pourman's. It's on Water by Mcgillycuddy's. They have booths where you can buy a certain amount of beer (ie. 48 ozs) and they have 4 different taps in the booth. The last time I went it was 4 different New Glarus beers. Otherwise, they have a very good selection of beers.

Also, I'm pretty sure the owner was in the Inside Marquette Part 3 video playing in the coaches' game, so he has a connection to the program.

Great bloodies, and fantastic breakfast food.

By the way, Turners was a great spot yesterday. Good crowd, but not too packed.

Good end to the afternoon too
