Ha. I remember when Hank and Rick came to the basement of Schroeder to talk about the team. There was this kid from Maywood that Hank was talking up.
I think this is really cool but I mean has support fallen that much in a year that we need him to do dorm visits? Though doesn't change that I think it's cool.
Wifey went to Syracuse for two years before transferring to MU (emotional scars still healing...), and said that Boeheim did the same thing. Doubt he needed to drum up support. Just sayin'
Maybe he was scouring the dorms to replace his wife with a younger model again.

Judging on the amount of booing we got from students last season, it might be warranted.

I apologize for being on a high horse, but I don't think booing your own team is ever appropriate. When your team is struggling, that's when they need their fans the most.

Not to mention that it's extremely naive and disingenuous to revise history by claiming the boo-birds were directed at Buzz more than anyone else. MU people turned on their players last season just as they've been seen to do previously.

I think it can be appropriate if you are unhappy about something within the team or players' immediate control. I would never boo if our team was losing if they were playing their hearts out and were simply less talented than the opponent. But if they looked like they were being lazy out there, yeah, I might boo.

Pathetic. If someone was on your grade school team losing would you boo? High school team? What about if during the Greek Olympics a bunch of independents showed up and were booing when you had the ball but then later said "we weren't booing you. Just the frat" it's not cool to do and direct it at whoever you want it's not like they know where your boos are heading.
Booing 18- to 21-year-old amateurs (well, sorta) because you feel from your seat 27 rows up that they aren't trying hard enough is bush.
Two years of Majerus, two years of Dukiet. Never booed once.
Definitely not exclusive to poor teams or seasons. Loudest Boo-birds I ever heard was the Three Amigos' senior year, when Dominic James' free throw shooting fell below 50%. A sold-out BC booed him and the team mercilessly after a particularly bad game at the line.

Agreed. Last year people didn't just boo Buzz, they were all over Jake, Derrick and Jamil. It was the worst I'd heard since 77 when the fans were all over Al. Neary and (to a lesser extent) the rest of the team. Success breeds entitlement. Entitlement eventually gets ugly.

And empty seats. Let's face it, a lot of students were down on the previous coach for the off the court issues. More so, the previous administration was not very engaging to the student body. So, yes, Wojo and Lovell are actually engaging the student body versus alienating, lecturing or disenfranchising them.

Adding to the choir, but never boo. ever.
Imagine if people came to your job, when you were 18 and bood you. Like, while you were taking a western civ exam in the varsity theater and someone came up behind you and just started boo'ing. At 18. I had no life skills or any redeeming qualities at 18, so why would it be ok for me to pass judgement on a kid who is trying his best and his best is WAY better than my best was at the same age?

Just learned that Wojo went table to table in Schroeder tonight and had an extended conversation with all the students who had picked up their Fanatics shirts and then gone in for dinner. jsglow jr. happened to be there using one of his 50 meal swipes for the semester and talked with coach at some length.

There are exceptions, especially in the pros. Some of the loudest booing I have ever heard of the home team was in 2009 when the Colts pulled Manning at halftime against the Jets when they were 14-0 and winning that game. Manning was visibly pissed at the decision to not go for the perfect season.

Heres my question though. I booed Buzz once, I think it was next home game after the Georgetown game. But whats the difference between that and swearing at people or even saying "god damn it what are you doing." Same exact premise so if you do the latter you cant really pretend to be better than people who boo.

God damn it what are you doing is clearly directed at a person who makes a mistake in that instance. Boos A) aren't able to be directed at anyone so I'm sure some of the players were under the impression you and others were booing them and that does t exactly feed confidence does it? B) booing seems to happen in massive crowds saying what are you doing to yourself allows a person (who given their role at this school is probably hard enough on themselves without drunken idiots booing them) to try and right their mistake without a crowd getting in their head and losing confidence.

Maybe this year, to manifest their displeasure, half of the student section could raise up their arms for the high five while the other half ignores them.
I think in this discussion on booing a lot of people always seem to miss an important point. This is something I never see mentioned but to me it's fairly obvious. Besides the fact of principle (whether it is RIGHT or WRONG to boo), can anyone give me a reason why booing can possibly have constructive positive results for the team?
I can find no logic that reasons that kicking your team when it is down will help things improve. It simply makes no sense. I understand it is intuitive, which is different, but logically why anyone would do it is beyond me.
Why haven't fans ever tried the opposite? Namely, the worse your team plays, the more boisterous and intense your show of support becomes. It makes perfect sense to me that when your team is at it's most trying time, the thing they could use the most is more support. Especially a feeling of supreme loyalty from the fans. When that is shown I bet it could have amazing impacts on the psyche.
Think about it - how does it feel to know sometimes you have undying loyalty and support no matter what from your loved ones? We have all felt it before from our family, friends, spouses, etc. It's a fairly rare thing which makes it so special.
Imagine if each and every one of our kids knew they had that from us as Marquette fans. Imagine if they took the court knowing that no matter what happened out there, a missed shot, a bad break, a fumbled pass - that their fans would be behind them and supporting them to the end.
I see this a lot in European soccer etc. Fans will die with their team and sing their song to the end no matter if they are the worst product on the field. This year when you get the instinct to boo, try standing up and cheering as loud as you can. Can't hurt right?

Preach it brother.
I know how the students can voice their displeasure. By only filling the section 2-3x this year, showing up with 10 min to go in the first 1/2, and not attend games due to quizzes or studying for a final that is a week away.

Hahaha, F off. Point one fine, point 2 I absolutely agree with but point 3 is complete BS school now is completely different then those who graduated even 5-7 years ago. If you don't get into a grad school now you can't do squat with a bachelor's degree.

This young alum says otherwise. I am making enough money to live in a remodeled apartment in wicker park (Chicago) with my other non grad school young marquette alum. Maybe you need grad school to rise to a level to support a family etc but the whole immediate need for grad school is blown way out of proportion in my 6 month experience and my roommates year and six month experience.

Wow is this a ridiculous statement
Ya know, I find it real ironic about people commenting about not booing players (which I totally agree with) yet people ripped the students, Todd, Derrick and Jake every chance they had. Especially Todd, you use the "they're only college kids" excuse for when it's convenient for you.

I agree that there is definitely some hypocrisy there. Both booers and rippers should remember that these are kids working their hardest to represent our alma mater. Ripping them or booing them is pretty sh*tty of us. And as mujivitiz posted, it is counterproductive and actually hurts our team.

Wrong.
I have Chicago Bears season tickets and, yes, given what I see on the field this year, they ought to be booed until someone gets it.
I have a different standard for college players. I'll never boo guys who try and are doing the best they can, no matter what the score. They're college kids and I remember all too well what it was like to be a college student with the pressures of academics. These guys aren't getting paid, are young and they make mistakes.
I've booed coaches before (but NOT Al). I probably booed Buzz last year because, by late in the season, his coaching was bizzare and there was no effort to put the best team on the floor. Something was terribly wrong, so yeah, I probably booed Buzz when he was introduced. I would not boo a player, though.
I will never boo any of my teams. I think its a very pessimistic action and one that does not encourage better play at all.
I do find a big difference between booing my team and being critical of athletes or coaches on the team. I know Derrick and others needed to play better last year for our team to succeed, and I know Buzz could have done a better job as well. I have no problem discussing their struggles amongst other alumni or friends, whether it be on a message board or not. But publicly voicing displeasure at that by booing the WHOLE TEAM during their performance to me, is rude and pessimistic. And as mentioned above, it does not foster better performances.
As Warriorchick noted before, I think the only time where booing may be warranted is when there is a visible lack of effort.

Buncha Bears fans used to booing their own team, heh? As for the "not going to games because of studying," that's an excuse for a couple of games, but not half of them.
