Just to change the subject for a moment, last night Davante Gardner played in his first professional basketball game for Hyeres-Toulon of the French B league.
Does this sound familiar? Coming off the bench he was 4 for 8 from the field, 5 for 5 from the line, with 5 boards, 2 assists, and 1 swipe. This in 15 minutes. His 13 points tied him for most points in their winning effort.
The Big Guy is "automatic" in all senses of the word.
I'm flying out to France tomorrow for the week for work, hoping to see him in a game. MU gear packed.

Nice to see Davante get off to a solid start. Eventually he will become a fan favorite over there.
Good to see Beef Car have a great start. I still think he was one of the more underrated players we ever had. His offensive skills were amazing for a man of his size.

The top two teams in the B league move up to the A league. The bottom two teams in the A league move down to the b league. Hopefully his team will be able to move up. He is in France having a good time. Getting paid and doing well. Happy for him.

Hello,
I'm a french fan of Hyères Toulon Var Basket.
First, i'm apolozige for my english.
Davante played his first two games in France. I wish to share my opinion with you
Davante is a great player, he's very strong near the restraining circle.Good on the free-throw line. Nobody for the moment can stop this player in offense.
He has just few problems concerning fouls ( fouled out for his last game ). Indeed, Euro and American are very different in that case. Referees are very strict with points of fouls and it's thruth that he needs time to adapt his game to Euro rules.
Davante is becoming slimmer at the present time and i 'm very happy that my club hired this player.
To example, Davante plays with the same coulours that Marquette ( Yellow and Blue )
He's in confidence and he has a good relationship with his teamates
Don't hesitate to ask me some news about Davante in his pro life
See you soon

Thank you for your thoughts.
Davante did well in adapting to the college game over time. He was never a... great ... defensive player, but he did improve significantly every year in not fouling the other team. I think you'll see him do the same with HTV.
On offense, he was always very good at drawing contact and getting to the free throw line.
He does some amazing things offensively. Glad to hear you're enjoying his play so far - he's a nice kid and an excellent basketball player. Good luck. Go HTV!
I agree definitively with your words.
His french coach said that he has to lose 5 kilograms to be more mobile ( in French League B, you have many "little" centers with great mobility ) . Also, he said that Davante has got golden hands on offense . And it's the truth
Davante profits from a very good young playmaker ( 21 years old and French International second team ).
PS : Davante plays with a Milwaukee borner, Charlie Westbrook point guard from South Dakota

TJ, welcome to MUScoop. Thanks for finding us! It's so cool that we will have our very own "French Connection." Please continue to keep us posted.
I am sure Davante will become a fan favorite just like he was at Marquette. He has a great personality that really shines through on the court. Just keep him away from the cream sauces.
By the way, your English is just fine. For probably all of us on this board, it's much better than our French.

Indeed. All we can hope for now is that everything works out for Chicos at Cannes.
Looking at the schedule for Davante's new team, Hyeres-Toulon plays 34 games from 10/3/14 to 5/22/15. That's a rather leisurely pace. Davante will have plenty of time to check out that French cuisine... ;)
I have a couple of questions:
In relation to the B and A leagues. How well watched are both of them? When was the last time that Gardner's team made it to the A league? Are there high levels of talent in both A and B or are most of the top in the A? Has Gardner been getting more and more playing time each game? And last question, can you make a guide to navigate the LNB site so I can watch some streams of the games if they have them?

So, HTV played in Pro A ( first french division ) to 2001 up 2012. Since 2013, HTV plays in Pro B. During Pro A years, HTV played EuroChallenge ( third euro competition in relation to Euroleague )
The only way to follow french games is LNB website. But if tomorrow it's possible to watch the HTV game, it's uncommon to have the possibility .. ( mentioned by " LNB TV " at the bottom of the game )
On this website, you have a Direct Live text without the video..
However after the game, you can watch highlights of the game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fuCT-CjcIw ( like that Davante #10 yellow )
Concerning the levels of French league, i think there is a big difference between A and B. Knowing that, in League A you have the right to have 5 americans players versus 3 on League B.
To Example, there was few players who played in France and became NBA player ( Bruce Bowen, Thabo Sefolosha). On the other hand, you have ex NBA player who played or play actually in France. Ricky Davis ( Roanne 2011 ), David Andersen this year with Tony Parker team , Demetris Nichols, Pop Mensah Bonsuh, David Noel etc..
Will Solomon, playmaker ex Sacramento, Toronto plays this year for Antibes ( same division of HTV ). Tomorrow, Davante will play against Solomon..
During his first two games, Davante did not play many minutes because of fouls ( early on the game .. ). And like i said, his coach want to Davante loses few kilograms. But, gradually, he will be on the starting five.
I hope that i answered to your questions ;)

No worries....lots of people choose to bury their head in the sand. ;)
And you are greatly mistaken in that Buzz did NOT coach the team as he had in prior years. Buzz never "lost" any of his previous year's teams...but he completely lost last year's squad...and key contributors: Jamil, Devante...as well as Steve Taylor and JJJ. He blamed a lack of leadership, yet he's the freaking head coach...and if after 4 years in his program Jamil or Devante didn't develop the leadership traits Buzz desired, then that's on Buzz as a leader.

The more things change -- even a change of country! -- the more they stay the same.
For much of his time at Marquette, I kept hearing how Gardner had lost weight or was in the process of losing weight. And yet every time I saw him, he looked the exact same, or at least within a pound or 10 of how big he always was.
And now here he is in France, and he is "becoming slimmer," yet I can see he still needs a manssiere! Too funny.

Dat science my friend.
Weight does not equal mass. At Marquette he was losing weight but not mass due to him putting on da muscle. While in France their having him lose weight and not put on muscle, resulting in him being slimmer. Silly goose.
Davante rotation is injured for the game. Also, poward forward isn't here. He will probably play more and more minutes

Chicos and I used to go at it, but I reached out and received a friendly, thoughtful reply. It seemed the like the Jesuit way to approach it. Our commonality is our love for our alma mater. Cura Personalis, AMDG, God in all things.
Yup.

I am late to this thread, but.... bienvenue à MUScoop!
Thank you for the updates. Where in France are you from? I visited last year and loved the country and its people.
As has been alluded to here before, our namesake Pere Jacques Marquette was French, and much of our region was explored by French Jesuits such as Fr. Marquette and Claude Allouez. So our bond goes back many centuries.
In any case, we are all HTV fans here and I hope you become a Marquette fan!

Thanks ! Hyères and Toulon two different cities ( 20 kilometers divide them). Located in south of France, called too " French Riviera " near Marseille, the second biggest city of France.
I didn't know that you namesake was french ! Ironically, HTV plays in the same colours of Marquette ( Blue and Yellow )

One other question...
What are the typical salaries for players in the B league and A league? Do they get other benefits like housing and meals? I am just curious what Davante is making over there compared to the NBA or NBADL
(I know it is bad manners to discuss salary in France but we do it all the time with professional athletes in the USA :))

I don't know very well but i think a good american player who plays in League A earns up 120 000 130 000 dollars maximum
For example, HTV have a payroll of 447 000 euros for this year ( it's one of the weakest of the division ). To divide with 10 professionals players...
In my opinion, Davante is one of the highest paid of the team. Maybe he earns between 50.000 - 70.000 dollars for one season .
Naturally, he has a housing lent by the club

Thanks! This is about what I expected.
For example, last year , ex NBA er Jawad Williams and Sean May earned 275.000 euros for one season with Paris Levallois = 22.900 euros per month . It was the best salary in League A, an exception ..
EDIT : but in France, a player is sure to have his salary at this end of the month. Different to countries like Spain, Italy , Greece ..
Players know the situation before signing a contract . Even if French league is not a the same level that Spain etc..
I believe most Euro teams also pay your taxes, but I could be wrong.

When Davante was at the free throw line, the crowd would chant "Auto-matic, Auto-matic".
Pretty simple.
Here's a story about it.
http://www.nj.com/college-basketball/index.ssf/2013/03/marquettes_davante_gardner_becoming_mr_automatic_at_the_free-throw_line_as_golden_eagles_soar_in_nca.html
the chant is
AU-TO-MAT-IC
To be sure, the stress is different when chanted. When spoken it is au-to-MA-tic, but when chanted it would be au-TO--MAT-ic.
In French, I believe the stress always falls on the last syllable and so I guess in French the chant would be au-TO--ma--TIQUE (in English, uh-TOE--mah-TEEK)
On second thought, I just realized that I actually don't know anything about the phonology of French chanting.

Hello,
I'm a french fan of Hyères Toulon Var Basket.

Awesome, thanks!
Watching this reminds me of the near uncanny ability Davante seemed to have to get just ridiculous shots to fall. There's a highlight in there at about 2:00 that is just pure Davante. Backs his man down, draws a double-team, then spins back out of it and just lobs up an underhand shot that somehow gets high backboard and drops right through. I swear, that kid used magnetic basketballs and he must have had a big magnet in his other hand. Some of the stuff he got to drop just bordered on the supernatural.
Glad to see the success he's having and loved reading the post from France. He will always be one of my favorites and was underrated in my view. Just a great knack for getting to the hoop and being able to finish through contact and convert free throws.

He is truly one of my all time favorites. So much fun to watch play.
i have said this before, I truly think the Bucks would be well advised to have him as the last guy on their roster. People relate to the big guy. Actually I think any team would benefit from having him versus some generic unknown from overseas.
Nobody can stop HTV and Davante, six win in a row .. Big win away against Poitiers 78-91.

In Europe, to evaluate a game player by player, we use an overall " evaluation " . It's a calculation based on different stats ( shot missed, rebounds, turnovers, fouls drawns etc.. ) . It's enough complicated but when you have a top evaluation, you did a good game ..
EDIT : Sorry for my english, it is not specific

Leader to B League with 11 win / 1 lose. First in ranking . The second in ranking has 9 win ..

Naturally, there is a MVP for the B League and of course, Davante is a serious candidate. Very impressed by this player and he capitalizes on a surprising team, with an excellent coach.
Davante has a small buyout in his contract enabling it to join a A League team everywhere in Europe, this season. But i hope that you can maintain him in our squad .. it's his own interest to stay here, he can win MVP title and win title with HTV

I agree with you . It is in his interest to stay and win title. Then hopefully HTV moves up to A League.
Thanks for the updates TJ! It is always exciting to hear news on Davante. I am jealous you get to see him play.
joyeux noël !!!
3 games for my last update . 2 losses and 1 win
14 points ( 6/9 ) - 5 rebounds in 22 minutes
18 points ( 7/8 ) - 8 rebounds in 22 minutes
15 points ( 7/10 ) - 5 rebounds in 30 minutes
Now it's time to the break, HTV first place in ranking for this first part of this season. Davante is back to USA until 15th-20th. Next Game, January 20th.

The B League is very complicated concerning rules. Composed by 18 teams, the first at the end of the season can play to A League next year.
On 2-9, we have playoffs with field advantage.
Teams 17th-18th, will play to C League ( Nationale 1 )
An other ticket is given to the team which won Leader's Cup ( competition different to the championship with 3 groups of 6 teams, based on team location like a conference in NBA ).
But in this competition, HTV was eliminated a long time ago .
HTV was amazing during this first part of season. Can imagine to play to the A League .. Huge for the youngest team of the league which the only objective is to stay to B League ..

An other ticket is given to the team who won Leader's Cup ( competition different to the championship with 3 groups of 6 teams, based on team location like a conference in NBA ).
But in this competition, HTV was eliminated a long time ago
OK thank you. BTW, this looks like a gorgeous area of France so I hope that Davante is taking the time to do a little exploration in his off hours.

HTV was amazing during this first part of season. Can imagine to play to the A League .. Huge for the youngest team of the league which the only objective is to stay to B League ..
Thank You for the update. We are pleased with Davantes performance so far. We hope they win the championship and join the A league.

Now it's time to the break, HTV first place in ranking for this first part of this season. Davante is back to USA until 15th-20th. Next Game, January 20th.
Hello everyone ,
No games during 21 days and a new win for the beginning of the second part of this season vs Evreux ( 77-64 ).
Davante played against old NCAA opponent Eugene Teague from Seton Hall.
12 points ( 3/8 and 6/8 on free throw line ) - 5 rebounds in 28 min
13/3 HTV !
Great win against 4th opponent. 68-58. Still first on ranking 14/3 .
Referees are bad in B League but essentially in France in general, really, from both directions..
Davante played great with 20 points ( 9/13 ) - 12 rebounds with 28 of evaluation
MVP of the game.
Youngest team dominate B League §

I was impressed by Davante's defense. Not only an offensive player. Never let an easy basket. Just 13 points added for 3 Denain's forward and he blocked two shots
Thanks! Keep the updates coming!

Looks like he lost about a 100 lbs., hey?
For the beginning of the season, Davante averaged 15.8 points ( 65.8 % shooting from the field) , 7.1 rebounds, 4 fouls drawn per game for 25.6 minutes
I confirm that Davante has lost weight for his first game with HTV

No words to describe the affluence of Davante in his team . New big win away against Charleville .
What a monster game !
28 points ( 9/13 , 1/2 three points !! ) - 8 rebounds - 6 fouls drawns in 32 minutes
Dangerous opponent Monaco and Roanne has lost. Still first with two win in advance !

Thanks as always! So if this team gets promoted to the higher league, do most of the players generally stay? Or would they need new ones to be able to compete?
(Just and FYI, "affluence" means wealth. "Influence" is likely the word you are looking for.)

50% on treys...Buzz should have unleashed him last year as his Sheeshlino
Oh yes exactly, influence is better ;D
I've recently known according to a French Basketball newspaper that Davante earn 2,500 euros per month.
HTV is ranked 16/18 on payroll this year so even in case of promotion, I could say that it will be difficult to save Davante in our team.
In B League, Teams can add 3 foreign players ( in fact, it's more complicated ). So when you join A League, you can have 5 foreign players, so; often, there is an important switch .
The reproach i do, in France, is that a coach will still prefer playing with second rate US players rather to use young french players..
HTV in B League with a small budget, plays with young players ( youngest team of the league ) and 3 top US players being able to dominate the league

According to a website , Before hiring Michael Wright, Cholet Basket ( France A League ) considered Davante Gardner. I guess, he prefers to stay and try to be MVP and champion with HTV rather to join a team ranked 15/18 in A league

Well, it sounds like he has a good chance at being in the A league next year after they move up anyway, right?

Promotion > Relegation
Currently, Davante is one level up from others players in this league. He dominates and I think, he would have the level to play in A League, for sure.
I don't know if Davante will stay there next season, because his salary is underrated. But, for his first professional season, it's amazing. I guess, he will finish this season with HTV and that's a good point for him and the team

Would rather see Devante in the NBA, balling with guys like Buycks, Blue, Novak, Wes, DJO, Wade, Butler, etc.

As of right now, 2,500 Euros is approximately $2,800. I have also heard that European teams pay the taxes on your salary as well as providing living arrangements. Is that correct? If so, $2,800/month is decent money without living expenses, and my experience in Europe is that public transit basically eliminates the need for a car. That sounds pretty good to me.

Not sure what Davante has worked out, but a lot of employers in Europe let you have a free car lease as well.
New big win at home against Orchies ( 84-73 )
Davante played 29 minutes for 19 points ( 8/11 and 2/2 three points ! ) - 8 rebounds.
He is greater than the others. Still first, it smells good for the rest ...
Win against BC Angers away 68-78.
Definitely, Davante played so great : 21 points ( 8/12 ), 9 rebounds, 7 fouls drawn in 30 minutes!
First place's opponents, Monaco and Roanne have lost. At this time, HTV has 3 and 4 wins in advance at the top of the ranking !
HTV - 17/3!
Thanks TJ. By the way, are there any good French high school seniors who have not signed an NCAA letter of intent that you could recommend?
To be honest, i don't know very well. But French players are fine this year in NCAA i guess .

Why he could pay his buyout himself and not an other team? I'm a bit disappointed cause Davante is our best player in HTV roster. This loss is going to hurt for the following of the championship. Especially before confronting Monaco , 2nd on ranking, in 10 days.

Thanks for all of the updates you've provided TJ. Sorry that Davante is moving on from your team. I'm sure Davante just wants to showcase his talents against the best in the French league in the hopes of further building a resume for a potential opportunity back in the NBA.
We will miss your posts and updates.
In any case , one of the best player that i have ever seen to HTV for a long time. I think that he could be champion, only 3 months remaining. A great career in prospect for Davante. It was nice to share my opinion about Davante and i will continue to follow Marquette !
Marquette fans are sort of HTV fans, we can say ;D
I hope that we move on A League next year !

TJ, thanks for taking the time to find us, and keep us updated one one of our all time Marquette favorites. Also, well done on bringing the Automatic cheer to Davante in France.
One question...once Davante pays his buyout, can he still play for another team this year, or is he done for the season?

If he pays his buyout, he will seek an other contract for the end of the season in a european top team ( probably for the playoffs ? )
The buyout is estimated at 20.000 dollars
To my mind; he could sign a long contract with a contract ( not only until the end of the season )

Hope Davante stays with HTV and finishes out a championship year. Would be good for him and HTV. Then move together to the A league would be best.
After these rumours, Davante finally stays until the end of the season with HTV, according to French newspaper. Great news with the aim of the first place and MVP title for him. Especially because Monaco, 2nd , won away HTV so . Just one win in advance on ranking ..
However, Davante played well : 23 points - 5 rebounds - 8 fouls drawns.
One question, Did Davante shot at three during his college year ? Because , during 5 last games, He takes 14 shots and he scored 7. Not bad for a center !

Must be his new svelte body allowing him to make the long jumper. I don't think any of us have ever seen Davante's feet leave the ground - ever. He even dragged them when he walked.

He was too busy getting doubled in the low post. His best game was vs Syracuse his junior year (regular season). I'm not sure if you have access to old highlights but if you're interested in his college game that was a great showing. Best game I ever went to.

He liked to attempt the trailer 3, but was only 3/23 for his career. He could always hit free throws, but move him a few steps back and he was usually well off the mark. Glad to hear he's improving that part of his game, because he loved to shoot them. When he used to play in the local Pro-Am summer league (an organized local league mostly for fun) he loved throwing up 3's.
He was 100% from the three in our attempt to get to the final four against Syracuse in '13. MU was 3-24 from the three that regrettable outing.
Jamil/Mayo/Junior/Trent combined for 0 of 14.

That game was a trainwreck. Buzz tried to replicate the success of Oxtule and Syracuse was completely ready for it. Carved us up like a buzzsaw. Not sure what was worse, that we didn't have a better gameplan in place for the rematch with the Final Four on the line, or that we still tried the Oxtule combination as the foundation of our team the next year despite seeing how badly the Orange exploited it in the rematch.
Win against Saint Quentin 83-74 , still first !
Best game of the season for Davante : 31 points ( 11/12 on shots,3/3 on three points line ! ) - 8 rebounds - 9 fouls drawns in 34 minutes.
Davante was so easy in offense, good for the confidence !

That's crazy. That sounds like his Syracuse game line, minus the 3s.
Any updates on Davantes progress?
On May 17, he put up 25 pts and grabbed 10 reb in win. Yesterday he had 10 pts and 8 reb in a loss. His team (HTV) is second place in their division.

Pretty good stats for the Ox. 40% on 3 pointers and 84% on FT's. Anybody know what the quality of this league is? And about how much is the Ox making playing in this league?
I think this is the "B" league . If his team wins the championship they may move up to the "A" league next year. Seems like Davante is really enjoying it.
