I'm hearing some new rumors from major donors that Joseph Kearney (dean of the law school) is going to be named President and that he has to approve Shaka hiring.
Announcement on Shaka on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I don't know about ya'll, but I would really like our new president NOT to be a priest of any kind. Nothing against the Jesuits, but the Prez has to know how to run the business of a major university. I like this hire if it goes through.
Is Kearney Catholic? Is he KofC?
Just curious
I found a picture of him!
If it's him, and not sure that it is at this point, his credentials are about as impressive as they can get.

Based on statements in another thread, it sounds like perhaps a bit of "mutual approval" needs to occur. The new president might need to approve Smart, and Smart might need to "approve" the new president (i.e., make sure he's comfortable with who his boss would be).

This may be true, and if it is true I'm hoping it happens fast. Heard that Shaka "doesn't like all of the interims." I'm not sure if that means he doesn't like who is in the interim position right now, or he doesn't like the fact that the 2 people he will be working with are interims. Either way, I think the only chance he considers Marquette is if we have a plan in place for at least the president and he has the opportunity to talk to him.

Wow, that's impressive regardless on my views of Scalia. To give some Scoopers an idea of the (financial) value of a clerkship with an SC judge, top law firms dole out signing bonuses an excess of $250,000 for those clerks. Crazy prestige.

This is exactly right. I'm also a little biased because I was his research assistant one summer in law school and took one of his two classes. He's incredibly smart, but doesn't come off as thinking he's better than you. He's great in a small group (or classroom) setting.
I'll give you that this public speaking has some idiosyncrasies, but I actually find I'm more engaged with the conversation or speech because of it. He's exactly the same way at oral argument at the appellate level and he's obviously persuasive there.
I know I've seen him at basketball games and I assume he's a season ticket holder. As others have said he can definitely fundraise. I don't think it's quite as big a part of being dean, but with the new facilities that just opened he was doing more than his fair share.
If this is true I couldn't be happier for Marquette, both for academics and athletics.

Powerful hire if this is the case. Top notch credentials, and obviously understands how MU works, which was the realized risk with the last round of external hires. Heard the hire was in the envelope, to be presented to the Board next month. Looks like they didn't use a security envelope. ;) Could also make our coaching search a little easier if candidates can be told that the line of the national journalists of "No President, No AD" isn't really true.

I tip my hat to you.
Honestly, I believe this move would make a lot of sense. He is on the level of renaissance man with a great forward-thinking vision. He brings the right intangibles to the table and both he and the university would thrive with him in such a position.
He will be blunt with what he expects out of a coach as a cog in the program but also very fair. That's how I know him, and that's how I see him conducting business on behalf of the university.
This would be a fantastic hire. Granted I'm also biased given he's still currently my dean, but from speaking with him on a number of occasions a great guy. Very intelligent, careful thinker, wouldn't see him as someone to make a rash decision.
As far as his public speaking at first it seems a bit off, but I think it has more to do with the fact he is legitimately putting thought into every word that he says. Something that, in light of the past 24 hours, is a trait most of us wished more people possessed.
As far as his sports fandom goes, last semester he came into our AWA class for a lecture and did a double take at my KU shirt. Said he might have to consider raising the admission requirements if it were a Cubs shirt. Dry sense of humor and one of the more approachable people in the law school. Heck if you ever come in to the school and notice where his office is it's right on the second floor with a door that leads out to where all the students sit, not tucked away in some corner.
Like I said, great hire if it happens.

Not sure if eavesdropping on the Dean and potential future president is the best way to ensure I graduate, but there's a group of us monitoring the Shaka Situation pretty regularly. I'll say this much, if I see Shaka walking out of the Dean's office with a signed contract in hand, I'll be sure to post something. Ehhhhhh... A close family friend actually donated a lot of the cash for that building. He was an MU Law grad and has had both children and grandchildren go through the school. Dean Kearney is an honors graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School

Never once have I been concerned with this supposed ego you speak of. I interacted with him on a daily basis for 3 years, attend multiple functions with him in attendance, and receive correspondence from him and have never seen this. A dry sense of humor? Sure. But ego...nope, haven't seen it.

I don't know the basis for your comment, but as an MU Law grad, Kearney has been nothing but positive for MU Law, it's students and alumni. His academic pedigree, fundraising, and personnel selection have only enhanced MU Law's national profile. He would be an inspired choice for MU president -- if he can be convinced to leave the Law School.

Its not like hes changing schools. He still has the power to look over the law school and pick his successor.
