Title: On Campus w/Bill King and Jeff Goodman
Post by: Wade for President on March 25, 2014, 07:31:28 AM
Sirius/XM Channel 91 right now.  I'm on hold, hoping to ask Bill and Jeff Goodman (will be guest) to shed some light on our coaching search.

I'll post a response if I get some air time, or if they address my question.

From Goodman:

"I hate Twitter...my wife is going to divorce me because of social media.

Yes...Shaka Smart is talking to Marquette. Personally, I don't think he ends up taking MU.

Do you really think he's going to leave VCU to a school that doesn't have a Pres/AD...to a conference that doesn't give him a ton more visibility than the A-10?  I say no.  Shaka's a smart guy (no pun intended), but I just don't see it happening.

On the otherside, heard that Gregg Marshall is interested in Marquette...but I've also been told that Marquette is not necessarily interested in Gregg Marshall."

Nothing earth shattering - if we miss out on Shaka and Howland, and STILL don't have interest in Marshall, I'll be left scratching my head.

I've blocked off five hours today to dedicate to this circus.  My helmet is on, and I'm strapped in.

Great... 4 days in and our hiring situation is being described as a circus..
Says a lot for the administration.

I was traveling last week, so I missed a lot of the early reporting on Buzz's departure.  But when I read things like this, I can't help but wonder how most national media would have responded to "Buzz to Va Tech" a day or two before it became official.  Maybe a few would have said it was going to happen, but I think a lot would have said it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'll wait for an official announcement before I get too excited or too disappointed.

Buzz to Oklahoma State.  Wonder if they have checked in to his VPI buyout yet?

This.  MU is trying to hire a coach.  It's clear that they've offered the job to at least one guy (Smart) who nearly signed, or is still thinking of signing, or, frankly, has signed.

It's the leaks from "sources" that are the circus.

In conclusion, Twitter sucks donkey balls.

will be interesting to see if they back down somewhat.

I was talking to a friend in NJ who admonished me for believing Shaka would come to MU.  From the outside I can see the skepticism, but any alum or fan can justify having a certain coach.  I was jacked all day yesterday.  It's amazing how anyone has any credibility on Twitter yet every feed I read I gave credence to....why?  I don't know I have a college degree from MU.  The Jesuits taught me better.

Interesting that the only candidate that appears publicly to have any interest in MU...Marshall is not appealing to MU.  Oh well another unproductive day ahead.

If he has not signed his contract (see Steve Alford to UCLA ... supposedly he never signed his extension so the high buyout was not applicable).

I'll be interested to hear his side of the story, but he knows his career rests on his name. He's not just guessing...I'd bet there's not even detective work here. He was 100% certain based on his sources. Sucks, but c'est la vie.

Honestly, it's pretty incredible how certain the VCU fans were about this. They've got themselves a great, stable coach. We need one of those.

I think his asking price was too high, so we moved to trying to spend that same amount to get Shaka. That's my guessing, no sources, reading between the lines of the billion words I've read about this over the last two days.

I'd bet, if option #2 fell through, he'd still be available ... but our leverage for working the salary down probably disappeared.

Well, problem is, you got Wake and us now. There will probably be more jobs. If Howland does "want" the job, that helps both parties. If, he feels like he's been dicked with - which is part of the business - then who knows.

Again...bottom line is I don't trust this effing administration - or lack there of. It's a farce. They've had how many effing years now to get someone/people in place to run this university. It's a shite show and you are effing with the school's top money maker and top advertising face.

From a purely business perspective, this is laughable the way the school's operated. Vacant openings of top faculty and administration? There's a vacuum of leadership at that place.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but jesus aged Christ, how many years have we seen this school sit on its hands and bumble-eff things?

Howland's price is too high? Really? We are ready to pay someone $2.5-$3M a year. Get it done.

TAMU, don't convince yourself that if it wasn't for the media, Shaka would be at Marquette right now.

Shaka is a big boy. He's not about to let some internet dweebs decide his future. If he wants to come to Marquette, he will. If he doesn't, he won't.

Goodman is a hack ever since he moved to ESPN ... Of course the Big East offers more visibility than the A10 ... it's just that Goodman works for ESPN, which doesn't have TV rights to the Big East. Trust me, I'm a Xavier fan and suffered through the A10 for 20 years -- an occasional game on ESPN and a few games on CBS Sports net ... and then scrambled to find games on regional Fox networks ... this year I watched EVERY SINGLE Xavier game from the comfort of my home on national TV ... It is not even close: Big East> A10

By the way, good luck on your search, hope you land a good one.

I am going to try this board one more time..so here it goes.  This is what I know>

1. SS is #1 on the list.
2. An offer has been made to SS.
3. SS is ok with the terms of the agreement, but that does not mean that he has said yes to the agreement.. this may be where the confusion has come from.  It is one thing to say I am ok with the terms of the agreement and another to say I am signing it.  For example I have looked at properties to invest in and I have said I am ok with the terms, but in the end thought that I had a better place to invest. I asked if this was just a ploy to leverage more from VCU and the answer was they really think it is not.

4. It is not an easy decision for SS and he has lots of factors to consider.  His pay would almost double at MU and other positives..back to Wisconsin, but he is really happy at VCU.

5. Biggest concern is not having a President and AD, does not know who he will be accountable to.

6. MU is really close to naming new President so there is work on to see if there is a way to get targeted new President to talk with SS to get some comfort.  New targeted president is not a SOJ so if this discussion occurs then the there is no going back on who the new president will be.  No guarantee this will occur.

7. Ben H. is #2 on list, discussion have occurred and may rekindle if SS does not move forward soon.

8. Gm #3...but no discussions at this time.

9. IC is not a candidate at this time.

10.  IF SS does not agree today, Wednesday at latest, look for Ben H. to move to #1.

This is what I think.  No one knows if SS is coming, maybe even himself.  Until I see something solid from VCU or MU it is not done.

I do have great faith in Fr. W, but especially Bill C.  He will do a great job.  I suggest we all just relax.

In Bill I Trust!!!

Good stuff.  Thanks for your insight.  I also am pleased not to see Wardle listed.

Don't throw Goose and Keefe under the bus, I am may not always agree with them, but they were sharing what they were hearing and passing it on.  Don't shoot the messenger..they were not making it up.  Some with in MU were misinterpreting info they got and so when others were getting this info and passing on they were sharing what they believed was true.

I have zero direct knowledge of whats going on, but I'd say our ability to provide resources to a coach puts us in a position to take our time a little more, I'd guess.

If you're Howland, you'd be wise to wait and see if you can land MU vs. Wake. Could mean $1m per year difference not to mention Assistants salary, budget, etc.

This allows us to potentlly be a bit more deliberate in our search and not rushed.

That said, LOCK DOWN SS! GET THE DAMN THING DONE!

BigDaddy,

Thanks for all your posts.  How about your take on BW's departure.  In the past you have seemed to be very supportive of him and noted that some recruits are likely to come if BW is still here (e.g., MS, DS, etc.).   Any insight you can provide on the deparute?  I am sure it is too early to tell on any of the recruits until the kids know who they would be coming to play for so I will save that question for a later date.

Another angle ... send this to VCU's message boards and even its AD.

Maybe SS passes on MU but he will leave VCU for greener pastures.  Maybe sooner than they think (hopefully later today!)

Thank you BD84. Really appreciate the insight and how comprehensive this is. Also exciting is connecting the dots to see that the non-SOJ Prez is in line with what we've ben hearing about Kearney.

Always nice when someone can clear the air and cut down some of the disinformation that is out there. Best we can do is wait now and hope we hear one of those two names for HC!
