That is all. I'm scared to death of this scenario due to our incompetent administration (or lack there of).
We miss these two, we are an effing clown car.

I have a feeling that is what's happening
It worked out with Buzz. Everyone wanted a big name and we went with the unknown assistant and people were pissed. If we end up with Isaac Chew and all of you are pissed it could still be a great hire. The thing is no one knows what will happen in the future.

Yup! Lest you all forgot: this is Marquette basketball we're talking about here.

Shaka Smart is the new coach at Marquette. #mubb
Done Deal
Starting to feel like MU was leaking Shaka hire to get Howland to the bargaining table.

Right, but you gotta like your odds with Shaka, or Howland for that matter. Definitely got excited bout Shaka today, but I still think Howland is a great hire, and he's not going to BC or Wake over MU due to some Twitter rumor. That said, let's get Shaka signed up.

Wow. Great point!! You know what else? We could actually hire a proven winner too and know with MUCH more certainty what we got. Call me crazy but we got a top 20 class AT school now. We can kiss some of them goodbye by promoting assistant.
But Chew recruited them all its his contacts in Chicago. Even if Buzz was the head of the program Chew was the recruiter so you never know if some of those recruits would stay. Lots of times the proven winner doesn't work out

Don't believe this will happen, but if it did, there are still some big time coaches that would like to be the head coach at MU.

You sure are a Negative Nancy!
Since you like gloom and doom so much, you should just get it over with a become a DePaul fan already.
Wow Niv, didn't think you would post something like this.

I for sure prefer Smart with Howland #2 but I just don't think we should get rid of our basketball team if we don't get either of these two.

I'm sorry, but the air here in TelAviv is getting to me.
There is definitely one, proven, experienced winner out there. Seems interested I the gig. Meanwhile we go after the younger more sexy guy. That's all good...but if you eff it up and get neither then. Well, call me pessimistic considering all of the major missteps the MU athletic dept clown car has done over the years.
Michigan HAD Les Miles locked up. It was done. Then LSU made a late push and Michigans AD would not take calls from Miles in his frantic bid to confirm UM was giving him the job. The AD was on his yacht not taking calls. Result? Michigan lost Miles and made a panic move to hire RichRod. That turned out...poorly.
Point is this - you would THINK at this point, MU had its crap together when it comes to finding a replacement. If MU knew or had an inkling this was gonna happen, back channels would've been done already.
Now, we risk alienating Howland and once again, settling, while we all cross our fingers and hope for the best. Sorry, but I'm sick of this stuff.
Hope I'm wrong. But this botched pressed isn't filling me with optimism.
Love me my MU and fellow Israelis, but c'mon guys.
Was psyched to think Howland was the one, even more so today when it looked like Shaka. Agree that if we screw up getting one if them we look bad.

Much better example than my Iguodala/Sacramento Kings example.
I say we offer Shaka. If he even says one "but" we pull out and walk away. This is way too important to bungle.
Hasn't Shaka been known to toy with offers like this? UCLA, Illinois, Minnesota, like us, were all "this close."
If we walk away without either him or Howland, Smart will go down in history as the greatest bargainer ever. EVER.
I'm with Niv. Howland clearly wants the job. If we go on a hunt for Shaka that doesn't pan out and Howland loses interest or gets snapped up in the process, it'll make the nickname debacle seem like child's play.
C'mon MU. Sign Howland now (my #1 choice). Or if Shaka is your first choice, lock him up NOW or say goodbye.
Yep, the biggest downside to all of this is that our OWN fans and community have worked up to such a fever pitch that if Shaka is all smoke and mirrors, there is literally no way this doesn't look like a failure. Whatever route they end up going will leave (if not Shaka/Howland) will leave a community of disappointed MUBB supporters that got their hopes up and have national pundits laughing at us.

Settle down everybody. I feel like no one on these boards has ever negotiated a contract before.
Throughout the process, there is give and take. Time to consider and time to act. I'm delighted that we're getting serious and moving to solve our problem quickly.
Look, anyone with a bag of money as big as Marquette's will command attention. Anyone with a tradition and commitment like our's and a fan base as passionate as our's commands attention.
We will not fail with a moneybag as big as our's.
Before everyone goes to bed tonight, do what we Catholics always do. Pray to the saints to intercede for us. In this case, pray to St. Alfred of Brookfield, patron saint of national championships.

I appreciate the perspective. And if this were anyone but Shaka, I'd agree. But so many other schools have been down this road before that it's hard not to infer that we are next on that list

Negotiate them all the time. Usually the ones like this, you get the main terms down, but you don't paper it for months down the road. You might have a memo of understanding or some other document to get things "done enough" while all the details get hammered out down the road. When we get deals done at the last minute when a channel comes down, or something similar, it often results in something of that nature.

Same here - been negotiating contracts for years, often for WAY more $$$ than involved here. If it's an important enough deal, you can start and finish the negotiation in one day.
And with the comments about MU administration seeing this one coming - maybe even helping Brent find the door - it's pretty inconceivable that they wouldn't have had something started way in advance.
