Thanks Goose, an unequivocal statement from you is all I need to remove any doubt. On to other things for me.
I will second what The Goose posted. Not a done deal yet but if this one happens Marquette will never look back. And for those gnashing their teeth that MU is losing the PR battle to the Idiot Savant this hire will be the Enola Gay launching into the wild blue yonder. The future is indeed bright. Aim High, Marquette!
Smart hire?

If it's Smart, I'll be the luckiest fan in the world (or perhaps dual-luckiest, as bama is also a fan of both teams). Enjoying the same coach at my two favorite programs.
Would prefer to keep him down here while I am still an undergrad, though.
A new Marshall in town? Will this hire get us Howland at the moon? Yes, that was lame...which makes it awesome
Howland, Smart or Marshall.

Saw a note on Twitter that Doc Rivers is involved in the process and it is moving fast. I assume that just means he is providing input in the process. Have to admit, the above posts have me curious though.
Anyway, kind of glad to hear Doc is part of the process. Much respect for what he has accomplished.

Doc is always involved. On the board right? Biggest impact would be if he took the job!!! Aim really big Marquette.
That is big reason Doc is BOT. Basketball is big part of our identity and he obviously is highly respected both in regards to basketball and what he is as a person.

The twitter I saw was Roy Schmidt. He followed up with another suggesting Smart is #1 choice of MU. That would work!!
To follow up on Keefe's post, option 2-4 are game changers. This will be a quality hire and not a lead assistant from a top program. It will show that MU and NBE can still be an impact. I actually am almost giddy over the prospects.

Perhaps a Final Four appearance? Perhaps that he's been in NCAA last 4 years? Perhaps that he's a Wisconsin native? Perhaps that he coaches an exciting brand of basketball? Perhaps that he's been able to get it done at a school with far less resources/tradition...and not in a BCS conference? Perhaps that he's extremely charismatic and would be viewed by current players and recruits as highly desirable to play for?
Is that enough? And as for being outcoached against SFA...he can't make the FT's for his team, nor prevent his player from fouling a 3 point shooter...

The bottom line is that Marquette will make a huge statement with this hire. This will communicate that Marquette is a prestigious destination job because of the commitment to success by the University, its supporters and the quality of its conference and the shared commitment to success of the league members.
The Idiot Savant can spin last week's events in any way he may choose but basketball aficionados know the reality and this hire will enlighten even the most casual fan to the truth behind the change. Aim High, Marquette!

That lack of discipline on that idiotic foul goes straight to the head coach. Smart will be an undeniably popular hire due to his personality but Howland is the better coach. But MU is looking to change the subject from Buzz so they want the flash.

"Lack of discipline." Come on man...we saw plenty of MU players foul on 3's over the course of the last 10 years...Nova did it against us at home. Players play, coaches coach. Was Shaka supposed to make the 2 FTs the kid missed that would have made it a 6 point game with 10 seconds left?
I don't dispute Howland is a very good coach, and I'd be very happy with him at MU...just prefer Smart for the reasons I listed in post you replied to..

Is Howland an Impact Hire - no, but a good hire.
Is Miller an Impact Hire - no
Is Wardle an Impact Hire - ah, no and no

Is Hopkins an Impact Hire - no
Is Smart an Impact Hire - Yes

I'm glued to scoop since learning of Brent's departure and am antsy as anyone. Someone please reassure me that Wardle is not being seriously considered for the job. I don't care if Howland goes to Wake, Shaka and Marshall stay put, Miller says no or is not an option, and we correctly decide "no way" on Chew or the dude from Manhattan.

Thrilled with any but I think the ranking should be in order of demonstrated sustained success at a level beyond what MU has had.
The realistic options are exciting. For what it's worth, I hear that Marshall will be courted heavily. I don't know if he'll say yes but I hear he's our #1 target.
I'm on record with Smart/Howland > Marshall >> Miller >>>>>>>>> Chew >infinity Wardle. I think we will see one of these names, and all but the latter two would make me very happy.
I knew Marquette spent a ton of basketball, but until I just looked it up, I didn't realize how high it was, more than Kansas. This can be good/bad, but a guy like Howland very much realizes this (as do other candidates).
I think it says a lot about MU in the coaching fraternity that after Crean left, MU still spent heavily on basketball during Buzz's early years, and keep continuing to do so. Makes a big difference. When idiots on twitter say "BC and Wake are better jobs than Marquette", it's almost absurd to listen to.
Wow, Marshall's offense is fun to watch. What a change that could be here.

I think MU will look good after the hire, but we should not assume the new coach is going to take us to two sweet 16's and an elite 8 in his first 6 years. I would be happy, if we make the NCAA's next year and I think there is less than a 50% chance of that. Howland will not bring in any late recruits this year. Maybe Smart could bring someone in. I am sure Smart has been out recruiting all year. Howland has not been recruiting at all. As far as Kevin O'Neal he wore his welcome out at MU with his foul mouth the last time he was here, I do not think there is any chance he would be rehired.

This guy said his "dream school" is Marquette. He did not say his "dream coach" is BW. How do you give up on your "dream school" within hours of the coach leaving? A mature rational person waits to see what the change really means. I would respect Cohen if he had said, 'I look forward to meeting the new Marquette coach in order to determine my future.' But that's not what he said and there is a difference.
Quit beating up a kid for reacting to a coach leaving. So high school. In theory, we are adults.
I never seen him play, but I understand he was the type of player that fit in Buzz's switchable offense. That maybe what actually attracted him to MU. Besides that, maybe with the dissaponting season MU had, he may have been already regretting his decision to sign with MU. Buzz leaving just gives him the opportunity to make a change he may have already wanted to do.
Wait, you mean its possible these guys decide where to o based on the basketball they will play, not the education they will receive? This is a shocking revelation.
