You sign him tonight. He would be a perfect fit for Marquette, and apparently really wants this opening. He is still a big time coach, and would crush it in the big east. Plus he is at that age where Marquette may be the final stop for him, especially after what happened to him at ucla.
Someone said they "heard" things might be announced by next Wednesday. That would probably eliminate most current coaches but would not eliminate Howland.
This would be an outstanding choice. I say hire him now.

Is this really the guy everyone wants?
Also, Gregg Marshall can't control his staff or players. Last year I witnessed WSU beat an opponent in the final seconds of a game, Ron Baker gave double birds to the opposing fans, and then there was a scuffle started by WSU assistants against their opponents assistants in the tunnel. The coaches had to be separated by police. Good coach. No class.

Didn't you watch the Requiem documentary? That's classic Big East right there. Ratings for the new FS1
Doesn't Howland have a fairly grating personality who did not get along with the press at all? Or was that only out in LA?
I'm not doubting his resume, but is he going to want to do some of the selling of the program that is required? He is an older coach, who was broomed out of his last job for failure to properly oversee his program.
Press? I didnt know that was even a consideration in MKE

I don't think "is chummy with press" is particularly high on the list of job essentials.
Just win, baby.

But then you never want to piss off Mike Hunt.
Keefe
You rock!!!
If he's dumb enough to sign with all of the crap going on at this university and the fact that there is no evidence this conference aspires to consistent high major status, you let the idiot do it. Worst he can do is leave after a couple seasons for a cellar dweller job. It's no longer unprecedented.
I'm not saying he has to be "chummy" with the press, just not antagonistic. It helps, especially when you first starting a job, to make yourself available, do interviews, try to sell the program to the fans in the area. I'm just wondering if he's the kind of guy to do that, or would he chafe at that type of work?

Correct, though in Milwaukee that is not much of an issue. My worry would be more about recruiting and his ability to grind it out to get players. He can coach kids up, but can he get the kids needed without UCLA on the business card. At age 57, is he willing to bust arse the next 10 years?

How is Steve Fisher doing at 68???
Ben is a coach and he will do what it takes.

Yep, and he can just hand them a list of players he's coached. Then again, I hear talking about everything in life except basketball with recruits really appeals to them.

I still think SDSU is so overrated it isn't funny. They also proved it again last night. Playing in that league allows you to get on a 10 or 12 game winning streak and run up the rankings.

I couldn't take any more of that article so I just skimmed the rest... What I gathered is that Howland was the assistant coach to problems beyond his control. Yes he recruited these players, but I'm sure his discipline was at the behest of the alumni.
