Title: Buzz Radio Show...
Post by: NersEllenson on January 16, 2014, 11:31:21 AM
Was some interesting talk about transfers in NCAA Division 1.  Homer interrupted a few times when I felt some good nuggets were coming from Buzz.  A few highlights:

- 1.6 transfers per year across all NCAA Division 1 Basketball
- Likes to always keep a scholarship open for this reason
- Likes balance in his recruiting class - cited Steve Taylor's class as challenging in the TJ Taylor left in a weird way, and Jamal
- Said Jake is probably playing too many minutes
- Said Todd is in a good "space," right now, and had no problem with Todd's comments on Jamil, though Todd texted Buzz about it, to make sure Buzz wasn't mad - which he wasn't.  Said hash it out with Jamil
- Clearly evident that Buzz plays the guys who can play to the scouting report - gives me the impression a higher value on defense.  Said Jake is very good to this extent, and I imagine Derrick as well.
- Said Luke Fischer was Manna from Heaven
- Interesting comments about Durley - said he called Durley's parents the day after Otule suffered ACL injury, and said would probably in Durley's best interests to look elsewhere, since he'd have both Chris and Devante to play behind now for 2 years, instead of just 1 year with both Ox and Otule on the roster as a result of Chris's medical redshirt.

For someone who has been speculated as out for himself and not about the team, I'm happy to hear this self-awareness.  And hopefully its a step towards Todd becoming a leader on this team.

He also spoke about guys he could relate to in life and on the court, specifically mentioned Juan and JFB.
Said he likes guys who are willing to work hard, but have also had defeat in their lives because they know how to pick themselves up.
I took away that character is of the utmost importance.
One of the better shows IMHO.

Good habits to teach the younger players.

The more I think about this, the more I like it.  Shows that Todd might be maturing into a leader.  And having a teammate light a fire under Jamil is a good thing.

There are no state secrets with Buzz.

Interesting how he felt Durley needed real minutes to play by (red shirt) soph season.  As much as we have ragged on his frosh PT.  If you're not playing by soph, you're prob done.  Buzz doesn't have many David Diggs who pop up senior year.

Agree on Homer Ners. He interrupts and talks over co-hosts, callers, and guests alike. Homer is so high strung that I believe he has no idea that he is doing it.

Its true, but that is part of his job.  He is supposed to steer the conversation towards the average listener's attention.  I was extremely interested in the APR tangent that Buzz was trying to go into, but I can understand that there are many listeners who don't have that sort of interest in workings of the transfer system.

Anyone who has time should listen to the clip that is linked.  Buzz is extremely candid.

To Homer's defense, though, Buzz can get long winded - and it seemed Homer was really trying to shape the conversation on transfers and perceptions of transfers.  Yet, with Buzz, there is rarely anything that isn't a good soundbite, and many times some of his best stuff is when he goes off on tangents.  But yes, there were a few times in this one where Homer jumped in, where I was really hoping he'd let Buzz talk.

Buzz was about ready to relate - I think - how he used to approach girls way back in the day...which would have been I'm sure, entertaining to hear.

Hopefully this turns out good, but there is a fine line between being a leader and a team chemistry disruptor.

Far and away the most interesting Buzz interview in a long time.

Based on his comments about Steve Taylor's Sophomore class (Taylor is the only Soph) I wonder if this means he looking at transfers/Jucos to balance that class.

I doubt he is looking at a Juco.  They would come in next year and we are already over-scholarship by one.

I'm sure Buzz is keeping tabs on guys/prepared for anything.  1.6 average transfers per team.  Could be no one leaves, could be 3 decide to leave...you just don't know. ABR.

Yes.  Never stop recruiting.  But I doubt that means that he is looking at a Juco specifically to "balance out the class."

One thing I think we're forgetting here is that Luke's parents are footing the bill for this semester as Buzz confirmed he had zero available schollys. I gather this was a well discussed family decision about the right fit going forward.  I sincerely hope he remains happy.  Early indications from his presser is that he feels right at home.  And it really seems that he's more than prepared to work hard this next year.  Buzz said something about practice, weights, and then an individual workout for Luke both Monday and Wednesday.

Agree.  The whole balancing idea has little value to begin with.  Just when you manage to do it for to get little more than making it look cute - Jenga.  Just avoid pulling a Norm Roberts and having 10 in one class and it's all good.

I wouldn't want to read an autobiography by Buzz.  Can you imagine 600 pages of Buzz stream of conciousness, with commas and periods thrown in at random, irregular intervals?  I'd definitely be up for a biography, though.

Also Buzz said he was talking to Doug Collins recently.  Later he said he was talking to "a coach" about the kind of men he gets along with (those that have overcome adversity).

Let me guess here.  Tuesday night Buzz was at the St. Rita game to see Charles Matthews.  Also at the game were Tom Izzo, Chris Collins and Doug Collins.  This is where he had his conversation with Doug Collins.  Was "a coach" Tom Izzo?

Sounds like the coaches go to be seen by the player but really spend much of the time in deep conservation with each other.

Or my eyes... or whatever, because you probably understand what I'm saying anyway without the need for me to channel my inner Dennis Miller as though I was some aural wizard trying to pile drive a three-headed dragon whilst my ever-so-more-duly-qualified tag team partner, Beowulf, munches on his value sized popcorn he scored from the kid sitting ringside wearing a Van Alstyne Elementary Middle School t-shirt.  And thus Brent Williams was inspired to become a slayer of dragons, and never ate popcorn again.

there was a piece on (cbs i think) before the cuse/unc game last week, and boehiem talked about how he's been competitive year in and your out...said he really learned you had to try to recruit so that you would have two guys from each class that would be around as seniors...said they needed to be really good players, just not good enough to go pro early.  nothing earth shattering, but it was interesting to hear him talk about it, and feel like he could plan on a kids progression that far in advance.

Hardly anybody famous actually writes his/her autobiography. Hell, some have claimed to have been misquoted or misrepresented in their own autobiography, most famously Charles Barkley.

I actually am more excited to get Luke here now that I know he wanted to attend and play for Marquette so badly that his parents were willing to foot the bill. He had many options that would not have required him to pay a cent, but he chose the Warriors.

I doubt that any of the schools being considered had a scholarship to give (nobody banks one for a mid-season transfer), so it's likely that his family knew they were going to be footing a semester's tuition when Luke made the transfer decision.

Possibly.  But he did say that in the end he considered us, Green Bay and Creighton and that all were schools that had recruited him in HS.  I'm anticipating Luke giving us essentially three seasons of outstanding work in the high post, then graduating with his class in '17, and heading to the NBA draft.

Transfers are an epidemic.  Very frustrating to Buzz, as he not only has to pay attention to recruits, but to who wants to transfer.   Got two calls on Wednesday from people who wanted to know if he had any schollies available for more high-major transfers.
Steve is the entire sophomore class and that is not healthy.
Buzz likes the kids who have overcome something.   Relates to them better.   (I think that this explains his affinity for and ability to get a lot from JUCO's)
He is really impressed with Luke's previous coaching (HS, AAU, and Crean) and his hunger to get better.   It will benefit him to play against Oxtule this spring and Satchel in the fall.
If Otule doesn't blow out his knee, Durley would have come to MU and probably been playing this year after red-shirting his freshman year.
Jake probably shouldn't be playing as much as he is.

Keefe,
I don't know why but I can't help but laugh everytime I see the hambone eating devil eyed knight's templar patch.  Too funny!

That's a real patch that is worn over in the sandbox. There is even a tactical version with a muted color scheme for wearing outside the wire. I'll confess I own one but never actually wore it on missions. As a then-Lt Col I stayed away from making such an overt cultural statement but my guys knew where my brain was at and that's all that mattered.

The source of that patch is that Haji propaganda often uses the Crusader theme when portraying Coalition forces. They also reference that our diet includes pork and that we keep dogs as pets in our homes. In the best tradition of embracing what pisses off your enemy tip of the spear warriors began referring to themselves as Crusaders.

The reality of life in Afghanistan is that the Taliban is feared but hardly respected. Proof? When American troops arrive in a village the first wave to engulf the men are Afghani kids who know we have Jolly Ranchers. Then come the adults who know JTAC teams have meds and often bring jabs for tetanus and even MMR. At a minimum, we will break out our kits and suture cuts, dispense antibiotics, and leave behind a stash of Motrin. We are invariably invited to share a meal which we accept gladly, not because biryani is a helluva lot better than MRE, but it is a privilege to break bread with these fine people. When Taliban Amr bil Maroof teams enter a village everyone runs and hides. It is a fact that the people of Afghanistan much prefer Pork Eating Crusaders over Taliban thugs.
