Did not get to see the whole game due to family Thanksgiving party (I know my priorities are no good lately). But With 6 points / 5 assits and 1 TO this Derrick Wilson I can live with. What does everyone else thinks?
He made some nice cuts to the basket early when post players were double teamed and got fouled or easy layups... but then for some reason stopped doing it. 6/5/1 would be good averages for him but I still would like to see him be more aggressive.
Didn't play much of the second half or it may have been better. He put himself in position to make plays instead of playing safety, pushed the tempo to create opportunities, and tried to score when it was given to him. A huge improvement the last two games, and still room for more. I think he sat in the second so Buzz could evaluate the backup options for when Derrick isn't in.
This will be the more typical kind of game for "Good Derrick." Even made 2 FTs. Wow!
The one play that cracked me up a little was when JJJ drove and kicked out to Derrick, who couldn't possibly have been more open from 3-point range on the right baseline. Derrick hesitated for a second and then fired a scud that barely caught iron.
It was kind of a Bizarro Play, because Derrick should be the drive-and-kicker and JJJ should be the 3-point shooter.
Still the offense moved at a much better pace when Jamil was at the point. I really liked the lineup when he was out there with DG, JJJ, Juan, and Jake.
Defense had to respect all 5 players. Saw too many times when Derrick was out there that the man guarding him never came outside the lane, so it basically shut down any driving lanes. Especially hurts when Mayo, Burton, or JJJ are on the floor.

Disagree. Juan brings absolutely nothing to the floor whatsoever. Would much rather have the true point that Derrick is, especially with his defensive abilities, on the floor. Juan has been as big of a disappointment as any player I can remember at Marquette.
DeWilson wasn't horrible before. He just looks a helluva lot better when the other guys actually make shots. And after watching today, can anybody seriously make the argument that Dawson should be starting over DeWilson? Good kid, glad he's at MU, like his upside, but he is not ready for prime time at the moment.

Seriously? The dude had some big rebounds...
Juan only played 16 minutes...and grabbed six rebounds. That's basically who he is and that's just fine.

Yep, have needed Juan or Steve to get boards. Neither is doing much other than that, but Juan has been winning those minutes.

Gotta disagree with you on a few points here Tower - Derrick was horrible up until the last 2 games. ASU stands far and away as his best performance. Today he was effective enough, against a poor team. Dawson, thought he showed well. CSF decided to put full 3/4 court press on once Dawson entered the game, and he handled it very well. He was decisive with his passes. Took only 2 shots, both looked good. Made a few nice passes. I definitely think Dawson can play in big games, and the team won't take a step back at all from Derrick, and still feel potentially could take a step forward. Dawson played very good D today as well. He'll be a good one at MU over his career...that I'm quite confident of...even if he doesn't unseat Derrick this year.

You really got to let it go. He checked into a game against Fullerton for the first time when MU was up by 20. You can't extrapolate anything from that.

Ahh whatever you say Sultan. Guess Dawson won't be able to be evaluated by you until he plays against a BCS team - who cares if the kid looks really comfortable on the floor with good vision, handle and jump shot form.
So, based on what you've seen of Dawson thus far - who do you think will post better career numbers while at MU - Dawson or Derrick Wilson?

YUS.
Juan will be fine - will continue to show glimpses this year; who knows what his final year will bring?
The rebounding %'s are solid. His awful FG%, turnover rates and frequent fouls on defense should all trend positively and have plenty of room for improvement. Very attainable.
He's capable of being a nice part of the team.

Of course you really can't evaluate a player until they play against top competition.
And I have no idea who will have better numbers. It depends on a number of other factors like Duane Wilson's ability to play PG...Nick Nostowiak...etc.
But regardless, it very well might be Dawson when all is said and done. Players grow...some in different ways than others. But that isn't really what I am arguing...I am arguing that he can't yet do what Derrick can do RIGHT NOW.
I think Derrick becomes a much bigger asset when hes playing with guys like Jamil, Davante, JJJ and Todd.
At least 3 out of those 4. That way Derrick's defense and ability to not turn the ball over become bigger pluses because having 3-4 scorers out there will make him less of a liability on O. His aggressive drives will be more open as well.
But man, the guy has got to get consistent from the line. He does a great job using his strong body and drawing fouls...convert and that can be a big weapon.

All in all a fair post - though I still say Dawson can do what Derrick can do right now - as I don't think Derrick does all that much....keep in mind today's competition. The ASU game is the only glimmer of hope Derrick has offered that he can be a good* PG at this level. Hope to see more of it from Derrick or Dawson, as it will bode really well for this team.
Look, if our shooters hit their shots -- we shot 44% from 3-point range today -- and Jamil aggressively takes the ball to the hoop and converts, it doesn't matter who we have at PG.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say we aren't going to shoot like that against too many good opponents, so we occasionally will need a play from our PG. Derrick provided that, and more, against Arizona State, but the jury obviously is still out.
It will be interesting to watch this develop. And I see know reason not to trust Buzz to guide its development. He hasn't done anything in his 5+ seasons to make me think anybody at Scoop, myself included, knows more about his team and its personnel than he does.

That unfortunately may end up being who Juan is, but I still think his ability to finish around the rim will improve greatly before he graduates. If not, MU will survive.

What objective measure are you using to make this statement? Dawson hasn't shown that he is better or as good Wilson. You are basing it off of one game against Grambling State. Dawson hasn't played against the big boys and hasn't shown a offensive spurt against the cupcakes. Wilson on the other hand has now put up three good games. Has a near a 4 to 1 assist to TO ratio. Let's base things objectively and not on a hope a player can be better.

If you're right, then Buzz Williams is an idiot. Buzz played Derrick 38 & 39 minutes in the 2 losses. If Dawson can do what Derrick can do, Buzz should have definitely found some minutes for Dawson, If for no other reason than giving Derrick a rest.
Truth is, Dawson just isn't ready yet. When he is ready, Buzz will find minutes for him against real competition.
I'm not sure why we keep having this conversation after every game.

Give Dawson 38 and 39 minutes a game and watch what would happen. Dawson is poised, confident, and has much better court awareness and vision than does Derrick - not to mention better jump shot form...and that will translate into baskets.

Compare...not even close. And it isn't really a matter of minutes as JD is averaging 12 a game. Dawson has a good assist % as does Derrick, and they are combined 0-10 from three. That is about it where they are the same. Other than that, JD looks like a freshman. Dawson has the lowest Orating on the team...by a lot. Why? Cannot hit shots and makes turnovers, and like most freshmen, has to learn how to play defense better.
Derrick plays good defense, doesn't turn it over, draws fouls, and makes assists...MU is #8 nationally in assist % as a team. Until JD proves he can add something Derrick cannot, he will be eased into mop up minutes to gain experience as he does have potential. The fact is, if Du was healthy, he would be getting those minutes as he can get points--better shooter, better dribble penetrator. But, there will be the same freshman issues with the other things with him.
Derrick is the man. Will JD be good eventually? Yes

And don't say "loyalty", because "loyalty" doesn't = 38minutes.

Wishful thinking. Dawson is currently not a 38 to 39 minute player and hasn't shown to Buzz that he should get that much time. He did well against a cupcake backup while Wilson did even better against the cupcake starters.

So again we are back to "Buzz doesn't see what I see," or "Buzz is only playing Derrick out of loyalty."
Piece of advice... When those are the only answers you can come up with to the question "Why isn't Dawson playing more?", you may need to come up with a third...
"Dawson isn't as good right now."
Buzz was 'loyal' to Junior. How many minutes did he average? Other than 09-10, please list the players for MU who consistently played 38 mpg. There aren't any. There is a reason that Buzz, the one who sees the team every day, the one entrusted with building the program, is doing this.
Derrick has looked great these last three games. Playing with confidence and is even hitting his free throws.
He is also a better on the floor leader than we realize. I was second row for the game today and Derrick never stopped shouting out directions to his teammates. Jamil nearly went off on the refs after a bad call and Derrick got in his face and told him to calm down. Jamil did and then responded with a three pointer on the next trip down.
Derrick brings a lot of unseen value to this team.
Hmmmm, maybe this is the the DeWilson that Buzz has been seeing every day, the same one named the starter even when Duane was healthy. The football quarterback. The one attempting to take on the mantle of leadership.

Really liked his game today. He had 2 TO's but one was because Mayo slipped and fell. He also played well off the ball making cuts and getting a couple of easy baskets.

Derrick will lead us to great things. He understands servant leadership. He has the tools to get us there.
Book it.
We need him to drive and finish strong like he has the last few games. Props on the FT shooting too.
I would be great if one of you stat guys could do some work on DeWil as a Junior vs. Junior as a Junior. I remember clearly seeing JC up his game once he became 'Senior' Cadougan. But I also remember that we were a very good 4th in the BEast and made a very nice S-16 run during his Junior year. My point is that DeWil's PG play this year might be plenty good enough if he can continue to play at this level.

If he plays like he has this week, there's no reason we can't still have Elite 8 or Final 4 dreams. If he continues to develop his game, the sky's the limit.
That said, John Dawson did hit a three today...
You guys are crazy with your analysis and stats and such. Too much logic. Dawson is already better than Derrick. Regardless if he's shown it at all. And you have to disregard whatever Derrick has done - Dawson could have done it better, if only he were given all of Derrick's minutes.

We still don't have a PG that can create or score. Davante also was the leader on the floor hollering instructions both on offense and defense.
