Eventual Superbar topic, but you'll be hearing about a gruesome injury to Kevin Ware. Every bit as ugly as the Joe Theismann broken leg years ago. Don't watch the replay if you're squeamish.
Who is #5 on Ville...what a horrible way to end your season.
My whole family just halted Easter banter to get around the TV and watch the replay. That's one of the most horrifying injuries I've ever seen.
They haven't shown the replay yet. I'm rather upset because I missed the live play. Really want to see what happened, and shots of the audience and team distraught without giving context is simply poor coverage of the event.
That has to be the worst injury I have ever seen in a basketball game in my entire life.
Can someone at least describe it? This is god awful coverage that they aren't showing the replay. Whoever is producing this for CBS should be fired instantly.

They're not showing it for good reason. He jumped out to close out on a three, landed on one leg, and the whole thing just shattered on him. I'm no doctor, but it almost looked like it broke in two places.
This is for sure worse than the Shaun Livingston dunking injury a few years back.
Yeah, I just got home and turned on my tv to see a player being taken off on a stretcher, but no idea what happened.

Jumped up to contest a shot, landed awkwardly. It appeared to me that his bone pumped right out of his right leg at about mid-shin but that could be wrong. Looked absolutely gruesome.
If anyone is just tuning in, the broadcast just showed 9 minutes of people standing around with no replay and no context. Horrible, horrible coverage. You cannot just say it was bad repeatedly and not let people know what was so bad.

Normally I'm one to be upset on not showing replays but I applaud CBS taking a stance if they think it is too graphic. Frankly I'm kind of worried you want to see it so much.

Horrifying. I won't let my son see it. Horrifying

they did show it once, and out of respect for the kid, and others watching, there was absolutely no reason to show it again.

Wow, relax, Ms. Media Critic. It was fucking disgusting to witness once. They are not going to voluntarily show it again just to appease your whims.
Wait ten minutes. Visit Deadspin.com. And get your popcorn ready.
Lots of people on Twitter (Bill Simmons and others) calling for CBS to go commercial. It was that bad.

Fans applauding for Kevin Ware as he's wheeled off on stretcher, with a towel over his legs. His shin bone was fully protruding.
Oh yeah I think CBS should have this on replay 100x. /teal

This is what I saw too, on the one replay they showed. I don't blame CBS for not showing it again.

After seeing the injury on the 2-3 replays they did show, I disagree. I absolutely wish I hadn't seen that. There is no need to keep replaying a major injury like that on TV.

As a former news broadcaster, it's bad coverage to not provide adequate coverage or context. As a professional healthcare worker, I have no doubt I see as bad or worse on a weekly basis. You give a disclaimer before the replay, then you show it. If people want to turn away they can.
They did show it once an it was absolutely disgusting. I would prefer to never see it again. There is a reason 100s of people were crying.
Prayers!

Good thing it was a news broadcast about professional healthcare and not an entertainment broadcast of a basketball game.

Wow, it wasn't there a few minutes ago, now there are at least a dozen.
It was horrific. No need to ever see it again. People can seek it out if they want to. The news doesn't show 9/11 planes flying into buildings anymore either, because it's not necessary. It's there to be seen if people want to see it, but that was absolutely horrific.
Reminded me of Moises Alou's injury and a few others. When I immediately saw the Louisville players hit the ground in tears literally seconds after it happened...that was enough. Never need to see it again.

What the hell do you do for a living that you see things worse than this on a weekly basis
Kevin landed right in front of his bench and they all recoiled in horror. Can't imagine what that looked like up close. That poor kid must be in absolute agony. Out of respect for him, no need to show repeated replays right after it happened while he's lying on the ground with his leg bent in an unholy manner in more than one place. They may show it later in a newscast with a disclaimer but no need to show it that fresh in the moment.
I didn't have the game on, saw the score, saw it was a 1 point game and turned it on since we just finished Easter dinner. Saw a number of Louisville players lying in the ground, wondered what the heck happened and then after seeing it, wished I didn't see the replay. Absolutely horrifying. Feel completely awful for Kevin.
Chiming in as another health care professional... there is a dramatic difference in my opinion from seeing a displaced/broken leg after the injury, and seeing a leg snap like a toothpick like that (from my grainy video, looks like it might even be an open fracture?). I've seen a lot of injuries that are more gruesome and not a lot phases me at this point, but the replay made my stomach turn.
I went to youtube and tried to skip the actual injury portion. I was fascinated/touched by the reaction that his teammates had to the injury. Russ Smith full on balling. Chane Behanen writhing on the ground. One of their bench players kneeling by Ware and consoling him while his leg is getting examined. Even Pitino was tearing up. I've never seen anything like it. Whether it was just the extremely graphic nature of the injury, or an example of the close bonds that exist amongst this team, there was a deluge of emotions like I have never seen after a sports injury.
I was rooting for L'ville for bracket purposes, but I think my heart's in it now.

+1, surprised any of the players there still wanted to jump at all after seeing that. Sorry for the kid, doubt he'll ever play again.
I've resisted looking so far. Was it worse than the Theisman break?

Navy trauma / ER nurse here...I've never been deployed but I took care of double/triple amputees, so deformed bodies was an everyday thing...but yeah, to see that young man's leg snap like a twig...horrendous.
I agree, very touching to see how his team reacted... especially whoever it was face down at the free throw line.. I'm sure his heart was broken for his teammate.
Good Louisville is better than anyone else. Just slicing up Duke right now.

Kevin Ware of Louisville broke his leg in two places. His bone was six inches out of his leg. It's has to be the worst basketball injury I've ever seen.
Watch the reactions of UL and Duke players. Hate to see this happen to anyone. Hope he can recover and get back.
It makes you thankful the Junior injury wasn't worse than it was.

Probably the worst bball injury I've ever seen, and worst I've ever witnessed live for sure. Pitino said he probably won't be playing for a year. I'm curious as to how his leg snapped so badly, didn't look like anything else I've seen other players do when attempting to block a shot.
Bravo to his teammate trying his best to comfort him while the medical staff tends to his injury.

It's amazing how a routine play that he's probably done a thousand times before ends up like this. Must have been just the right angle with the right force.
My brother in law is an ortho doctor. He said that an ACL is worse than that leg break. He said the surgery is simpler than an ACL surgery too, basically insert a steel rod from knee to ankle. Ware should be back on his feet quicker too.
Lets hope that's true.

Mentally it has to be tough to come back as well for both injuries knowing that could happen.

I had a similar reaction (of course after I covered my eyes and said holy s$%t)... I hope and pray they don't discover some other underlying cause that may have weakened his bones... The kids attitude immediately after it happened is off the hook though, just win... wow...
Pitino should call up Coach Crean and get the name of that world class doc who took care of Maurice Creek seein' that IU basketball players had access to the very best medical care thanks to all of the head coach's connections and such.
Worst basketball injury I've seen, but as others have said, a break will heal. I hope he comes back. I think he will, at its not an ACL or an Achilles injury. I would put this under the Marcus Lattimore injury a couple months back. What happened to Marcus made me want to puke. I wish that kid nothing but the best and quickest recovery.

This wasn't a typical break. Open fractures of the tibia and fibula that protruded 6 inches from his skin. It will require significant surgery and rehabilitation.
Different type of injury but as significant career wise as Lattimore's. Best comparison is Joe Theismann.

Holy SH*T.
I know it stuck out six inches, but HOLY SH*T.
seeing it just put a new spin on it.
Get well soon.
Update on his condition, if any of you guys are interested in it.
"Dr. Reed Estes, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and physician for the UAB football team, said surgery to stabilize the bones in such cases is usually successful and Ware should return next season. Louisville coach Rick Pitino said the injury was the same one sustained by former Louisville running back Michael Bush, who has returned to have a productive NFL career with Oakland and Chicago."
A couple writers commented yesterday that it looked like he was trying to adjust his landing to avoid falling off the elevated court. All the more reason for those courts to be gone.
I was watching the game when it happened and have seen the replay maybe a dozen times, but that photo made be a bit lightheaded the way the bone is sticking out.
The local news reported last night that he may have had a pre-existing stress fracture that contributed to the severity of the break.
Kevin Ware is a BEAST!
For those of you who haven't seen it, this picture was taken yesterday, about 24 hours after the injury.
