Title: Who's leaving? Other than Junior and Trent...
Post by: MUFlutieEffect on March 31, 2013, 11:04:44 AM
Obviously there have been quite a few lengthy threads on Vander, who I'm convinced will be returning (to be honest, I don't even think there's a small chance he'll leave).  We all know Otule's options.

Any other transfers?  Namely, and this is 100% speculation on my part, I can definitely see Ferguson leaving.  Wouldn't be shocked to see Mayo leave either.

Thoughts?

Thoughts? Yeah-- let it play out.  It hasn't been 24 hours since the off season began. Honestly.

I heard Buzz is leaving.  I hope we can keep him

I just read on Dodd's board that Buzz is leaving. He's being pushed out by the AD.

I have to think Ferguson heads to a mid-major where he can get some quality PT. Could just be his demeanor, but he always looked so distant/stoic on the bench. Sounds like Otule might decide to pursue a professional career abroad. With his injury history and limited mobility, his basketball earning potential probably has a shorter window and carries more risk than most. I think everyone else is back. Already 22, I just don't see Mayo leaving and wasting another year watching a new team. Pure speculation, time will tell how things play out.

So, with 100% speculation you definitely see Ferguson leaving?

Expert analysis!!!

Dude, settle down, it's a conversation, not a claim.  At what point did I consider myself an expert?  Sorry for my poor diction, let me rephrase: Although it is speculation on my behalf, I would not be shocked to see Jamal Ferguson transfer.

Sorry for prompting discussion on a discussion board.

What's your source for Otule? Ferguson and Mayo though I think will be gone. If the talk on JJJ holds true, Ferguson will wind up behind him. Mayo has a lot of potential but he had more bad than good this year. Mayo leaving would amount to addition by subtraction.

Otule is a distinct possibility, from the sounds of it.

DCWarrior - I'm putting a lot of stock in this article. Gardner's quote is most telling. Otule and Ox spend a lot of time together, which makes me think Otule will move on. Time will tell.

Mayo and Otule

TM either commits to worth his tail off in the off season to improve or he leaves. His current level of play is sub par.

Not sure who is leaving but I wouldn't be suprised to see MU add another Lockett type transfer or sign another JUCO this spring. There's a good chance at least 2 or maybe 3 players who are expected to or could be back next year won't be.

Second.

I'd like to see Jamal back. He appears to add a lot of length, explosiveness, and quickness to the backcourt.
Not sure he'll gain significant minutes next year though with Duane, Deonte and JaJuan.

I also think there's a good chance Ferguson leaves, and I'm disappointed he wasn't given a fair shot. But then again, Anderson barely played last year and this year he started. That may not be the case for Jamal, but his role should increase with Lockett leaving, if he does decide to stay.

When is the date when we will know who the 13 scholarship players are for 2013-14?  Is it sometime in June when the five new scholarship players are on campus?

I would be surprised if Ferguson left. By all accounts he accepted his role and was a hard worker. Him getting into the Miami game was a statement by Buzz and wouldn't have happened if Jamal wasn't working his butt off in practice.

I think Mayo is the most likely not to return. I want him back, and honestly think Todd is one of those kids who would really benefit from being at Marquette and having Buzz as his coach even if he never gets back to contributing as much as he did the first half of his first season.

When asked if he'd be back last night, Otule said "I don't know, I want to, but I don't know." I think Chris will be back. But if I were taking odds, I'd put it at 55/45. He definitely seems to be considering his options, but that's likely with anyone who is working on a master's.

Not given a "fair shot"? WTF does that mean. This isn't little league where everyone is guaranteed a certain amount of playing time. There are 13 guys on the team. Some ride the bench. That's major college basketball everywhere.

I am not sure if Garret Swanson will continue as a walk on. I saw him last night working out at the Planet Fitness in downtown mke last night. It was kind of surprising to me as to why he would not use the gym at the Al McGuire Center.

Not sure if there was a reason why, but it seemed all the players left the Al pretty quick after they got back last night. Just picked up their food and said goodbyes.

Also, was he able to travel with the team? He isn't eligible to play until next year, right? As an ineligible walk-on he doesn't travel if I am remembering correctly. Do walk-ons have full access to facilities 24/7? I thought there were restrictions that were more stringent on how much time walk-ons could use facilities.

I see Swanson working out at the rec center 4+ nights a week around 8-10pm. My suspicion is that he wants to be strong.

Yep, he cannot travel with the team as a transfer sitting out.

I think it is premature in regards to Ferguson.  There is another thread about Calipari running guys off, but when a MU guy doesn't get playing time, we assume he is going to transfer.

What do you people want, Buzz to sit Vander so Ferguson can play?  Maybe Buzz explained his role, much like he did with Taylor, and he is fine with it.  Has anyone seen him in practice?  Is he developing?

Here is a guy who is the fastest on the team, is long and athletic.  I for one think he stays and gets more playing time than Burton.

Yup, Calipari just had his starting PG, Ryan Harrow transfer.  Had to make room for the big burger boys.

I don't think the issue is what "we" expect, so much as what the player expects (or our best guess as to what the player expects) juxtaposed against the status quo.  If a guy expects to play a certain position, or see a certain number of minutes, and isn't getting that, transfers happen.  I think this logic can be applied to any/all transfers in recent MU history (save, perhaps, Mbakwe, who left to be closer to his child).

Granted, no one on this board knows what Buzz did or didn't say to Ferguson some +2 years ago on the recruiting trail, but while there's no reason to believe Buzz promised Jamal a certain number of minutes, there's also no reason to believe Ferguson signed on expecting to ride the pine.

So no, I do not expect/want Buzz to bench Vander for Ferguson.  Again, everyone here is guessing what Ferguson expected coming to MU.  However, IF he expected to play a significant role, it would make sense that he'd transfer to a place where that is a possibility.

All recruiters promise players significant playing time to get them there. The work is in keeping the players they want there. Jamal ferguson leaving makes sense if he's expected to fall behind incoming guards. The guy can ball. Mayo being benched mid-season tells me him and Buzz are butting heads. He has 2 years left, so he may leave as well. Thomas with no scholarship is a concern.
