Davidson is 59 on Kenpom .. their best two wins are 85 Vandy and 83 Richmond.

Other than that, their last 20 odd games are all Kenpom 200+, give or take.

Quickly looking, their top 7 MPG players are rather tall (6'3; 6'4; 6'4; 6'6; 6'7; 6'7; 6'10).  Will we see some of the 2 guard 3 forward lineup we saw vs Cuse?

Cohen is 6 10 230. If we keep him out of the paint, we will be fine.. Corchoran can jack 3s. 80 percent from ft. As a team.  Outle and Gardner will get minutes. Big game for both offensively. Marquette by 6

Gotta like the matchup, but the way they're capable of draining 3's they're the type of team that if hot enough could beat anyone on any given day

Davidson Board, seems like they feel disrespected by the seed and were bumped down a line to make the bracket work.

I thought that as a "highly selective" school (Davidson's website's words, not mine), there would be a bunch of uber-boring names on this roster, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Given how poorly we have played at times, escaping with wins over the likes of a battered St John's team and Uconn, I think we have a good chance of being upset.  I really hope we're due for a breakout game (which I think we are, since we have played poorly recently), then we can maybe carry that momentum into a payback game against Butler.  Otherwise, we may not live up to our seeding gift.

He's pretty good at this prediction stuff.

Most talking heads were picking Murray State and Isiah Cannon over MU last year.  How did that work out......
Title: Re: Davidson
Post by: MUBurrow on March 17, 2013, 06:45:44 PM
As far as picking upsets goes, I can understand why a lot of analysts would pick this ad one of their bigguns. MU could be seen as a bit overseeded at the 3, can't shoo from behind the arc, and has been known to go long stretches without being able to put the ball in the basket. Davidson meanwhile may be a tad under seeded, can get really hot from distance, and has some size. On paper, it's as likely as any. That said, I still think MU takes care of business. But I can understand why this would be a popular upset pick.

Considering this is a #3 seed vs. #14 seed, this game is close to a toss up. Not to over simplify, but if "good" Marquette shows up we win, if "bad" Marquette shows up we lose. We've been Jekyll & Hyde all season.

They shoot free throws really well, best in nation.

But don't turn teams over much(thank you) and suck at rebounding.

Use our size. Work the paint. Get fouls, use depth, rebound.

We gotta take this one at a time but Davidson has only beaten 1 team in the tournament: Montana.

Well, conference-wise they whooped the second best team in their conference twice.

With only six losses on he year, this team sounds like they're playing extremely well team ball and are cohesive.

We need to pressure, create TOs, hit our FTs, draw them into foul trouble, and AVOID the relaxing D that allows open three shooters.

If I were Davidson, I'd zone MU, run high screens, drive and kick for the three, and run the pick n roll especially when DG hedges (he can't recover quickly).

They absolutely will have to zone us.  They only go seven deep with no real backups at the 4 and 5.  Keep running fresh bodies at them, and feed the post to get their two bigs into foul trouble.  Those two are their only double digit scorers.

According to their message boards, they will occasionally use a 2-3 zone, but have been killed on the boards when they do.  They don't expect a steady zone--primarily man defense with some possessions in zone.

Also, it sounds like they had another senior big--Clint Mann-who saw decent minutes in non-conference that got a concussion in January and has not returned since.  Looks like he was their sixth man (no pun intended) and they have little frontcourt depth behind him.  But, they have won 16 games without him--15 in conference, one against Montana.

Is Davidson a good and cohesive team? Yes. They do not have the athletes or the depth that we do. Just because they played a few good teams early in the year doesn't mean a thing. We absolutely should beat these guys. Their board seems to believe we are very unimpressive and that they should win this game. But I'm sorry there is no reason why we shouldn't run away with this one. Are we capable of dumping the bed, absolutely. I'm confident buzz and the boys will be ready and all this bullsh and the commentators picking this as an upset should light a fire under this team. They'll be ready. Marquette by 10. This is not me underestimating Davidson but screw them and run into the second round on a high note.

That right there. As I have said before, if MU enters the tournament as a top 4 seed or makes it to the Sweet 16, its hard to complain. Just because you should win doesn't mean you will, nor does it mean you weren't as good as your seed if you don't. It's one game and sometimes you lose. That said, I expect MU will win.

In the eyes of the committee, RPI, and Top 25 voters, MU is one of the Top 15 teams in the country (in what is an admittedly pretty weak year, but so be it). Regardless of what happens this weekend, its kind of hard to complain.

Congrats on your 3 seed, I am looking forward to a trip north to Kentucky to watch the game. You have a number of knowledgeable posters on this board, I have read several of your threads now. While I detect some level of respect and concern from you regarding the matchup, I would like to correct a couple of the above comments. The second best team in our conference was Not App, but College of Charleston, who we thumped not just twice, but 3 times by an average of 15 points, including 74-55 in the conference tourney finals last week. While CofC is certainly no Notre Dame, they are a decent team with some good wins OOC, such as Baylor, BC and ODU.

Interesting that Vegas has the spread at 4 points, while no other 3-14 matchup is under 10 points. I suspect that we are a tad under-seeded at a 14.

Should be a good game !

All joking aside, the team needs to be firing on all cylinders in the tourney, regardless of opponent.

Greetings cats. I come in peace. I mean you no harm! I expect a tough, hard fought game. You have sharp shooters which we struggle against. Also, our coach plans well but doesn't seem to be able to finish. If you can hang tight you should pull out a win. The key is to stay close because Buzz Williams is not the best tactician. Do that and you can beat us.

Also, our coach plans well but doesn't seem to be able to finish. If you can hang tight you should pull out a win. The key is to stay close because Buzz Williams is not the best tactician. Do that and you can beat us.

Buzz can't close games Chicos?

Someone impersonated Chicos on another teams fan's site earlier this year.  I doubt it's him.

Who knows what they will actually do on the court, but their board seems to think they'll play a lot of man, the reason being that they have done a poor job of rebounding in the 2-3 when they've gone do it this year.  When there is a lot of sky falling talk, that is some analysis that I like to read considering our 2-3 issues this season.
If we can turn some turnovers into points early then I don't think we should have too much of a problem.   Letting those big men establish themselves at any point becomes the issue when you've got multiple guys that can hit from deep.  Chris in those first 5 minutes has got to be huge.

And if that was CBB, then he was confusing the coaches of his alma maters.

We gotta take this one at a time but Davidson has only beaten 1 team in the tournament: Montana.

We should play Montana instead.  We need to voluntarily move down to a 4 by swapping with Syracuse.

Davidson and Valpo are pretty much the exact same team.  Experienced with a lot of shooters that can get hot if given room.  I mean, look at the team stats...they basically mirror one another.

Davidson and last years BYU team are pretty damn-close too, with the edge going to BYU.

I like this! Teams should be allowed one swap with any team seeded below them.

Speaking of which, Iona is seeing us across the bracket and probably hungry for the shot they never got at us last year...... and if I recall they would have beat us..

Nice... The freak-out here about Iona during halftime of that game was great!

I guess Iona checked out Scoop at the half and started looking ahead.

Come on.  That was not Chicos.  But it might have been Hoopaloop pretending to be Chicos.

Buzz can't close games Chicos?

Really?  You really think that was me?   ::)

Buzz can close games.  Buzz was my choice for COY this year AND last year.

That wasn't me posting over there, but thanks for the link to the site.  Just like it wasn't me posting on the JS site (someone using a similar name) or many other sites where the same person has an obsession for me.  This happened just a few weeks ago here as well. The JS was very helpful last month in sharing some information about who it was and shut them down over there until he pops up again.   This person likes to be so much they should come on down, have a beer...house is open.

I guess this tells us what we all have suspected over the years.

Don't be so gullible.   ::)

No Chico, i didn't actually think that was you.

Spelling your name out like that is unlike you, (marquette) also the form of writing didn't fit the bill.

You must have your own fan base.

I'd use different adjectives:  A-hole, d-bag.

Well that's easy for you to say, since you know what the filters will allow on here.  We try and call people out and it's all hairy wet cats and assholes.

Hoopaloop probably impersonated Chicos. And the wheels on the bus go round and round....
