Is he to nice a guy? Smiling and turning the ball over all the time. He had at least 5 top of the key shots he did not take or even look for his shot. Does he want to play at the next
level? I saw one great half this year against GB, last year he was a warrior, this year he is playing like a squaw. Secondly, playing 11 is to much, need to have an 8 or tops 9 man
rotation. Juan played better today but he stills needs to stop faking shots and take them. When they stop moving on O, than Blue throws up ridiculous shots. I think in the long run Todd
might be the best player. We will see how Buzz coaches these kids up. Defensively today, they were sleepwalking. NCC was not as bad as most of these buy bad teams that come
to MU this time of year. Season begins Tuesday. First five games, they have to get out of the box fast. I see both loses on the road so they need to hold court at home.
Doesn't seem to have a killer instinct. A little different guy. His pops is a good guy who tries coaching him up right mentally.
He's not a wing. I don't know why people were predicting a break out year from him because he would be able to play his "natural" position. He's a 5..and that's it.
You insult the squaws. Right, Warriorchick?
Had concerns about his motor when he was in HS. He took a lot of plays off and seemed disinterested at times. I thought he'd grow out of it, but he still is far too passive.
Squaw is a pejorative word. I think we should refrain from using it on this site.
The turnovers and laughing after them were one thing, but he played 19 minutes today and did not take a shot. That is the unreal stat. The one shot he took was a charging foul.
Anderson played 17 minutes and had 9 points.

I don't care about the laughing. I care that he can't get an offensive rebound and a put back.
If he plays like this next season, McKay and Taylor will grab the majority of his minutes.

At this point if he grabbed an offensive rebound, he would throw it away. Then smile...
Hope be bounces back with a strong game vs. UCONN on Tuesday. We will need it.
Regarding the 11-man rotation, I presume that was "predetermined" to get all the players some run as I wouldn't expect many opportunities for minutes for the end of bench guys once the BE conference games start. Especially the 1st 5 games. I would expect a much tighter rotation on Tuesday and going forward with Ferg and Thomas likely struggling to get PT. With Buzz out it'll be interesting to see how the sub patterns play out against UConn.

This. As a 5 last year (due to injuries) Jamil played his best basketball. He was at times overpowered, but was a quicker jumper than most 5s and could get wide open looks when he took slower guys outside.
This year he's forced to handle it much more and play against quicker and more athletic players. So far the results have been horrible. The way he's playing right now he should be battling Otule (who's a shadow of his former self) for back up minutes at the 5.
Jamil has been Jekyll & Hyde so far. Really good and the really bad.

I hope you intended Teal. JW's body type and game is clearly that of a 3. He's got a good outside shot (best 3 point shooter on the team). He can play in space. He has the talent to be an NBA prospect. His problem is he loses concentration and doesn't play hard. When he gets into the flow, like he has during a couple halfs this year, he plays like an All American. But he seems only able to get into that flow by hitting a couple shots. Once he disappears he is gone. Then he seems to be making excuses for himself like "I don't really care that much or I wasn't really trying that hard". This game may the opportunity for Buzz to have a come to Jesus meeting with him.

Have you seen any of our games? He may have the "body type" of a 3, but he's waaaay too slow and turnover prone to play it at this level. His best games (by far) for us have been at the 5.
Yes, I've seen everyone of our games. He's turning over the ball because he doesn't have his head in the game. Its not because he should be playing the 5. Maybe Lockett needs to play the 5 too since he rebounds ok but can't shoot from the perimeter. Maybe that's the problem, we have a whole bunch of centers. ::)
Guys it's pretty obvious Jamil's just playing possum til we really need him. Doesn't wanna be pressured to go early entry NBA so he can come back and play a season with his cousin Duane next year.

There may be more athletic players than Jamil, but not many. His problems seem to occur above the shoulders which isn't saying that they should be minimized. Lack of focus is usually a lot more involved than not just trying hard enough to focus or not caring enough. Much of a player's athletic advantages can be neutralized by too easy going of a personality. Coaching ain't all X's and O's, Buzz has a challenge on his hands pushing Jamil to make the most of his considerable talents.
BTW, against Florida, Jamil was really made a nonfactor on the inside, so I'm not so sure that the 5 is were he should be. I'd stick to playing him at the four, and focus on upping his emotional investment in the game.

Maybe you're right. All I know is that when Jamil was playing against bigger, slower people and wasn't counted on to be a ball handler he looked a lot more "focused" to me.

He looked lost out there, only decent play was a defensive rebound with 3 or 4 minutes to go. In J Wilson's defense, how anyone can be "found" when the coach makes as many substitutions as Williams, I can't imagine. Williams substitution pattern yesterday was bewildering--maybe for players too.
His body type is absolutely NBA. Great physical talent. Capable of being a poor man's Tracy McGrady.
Would you pay this dude to play basketball for your team?
We can hope. For those old enough to remember Jim McIlvaine was a good defensive player for the first couple years at MU but didn't get it going offensively until late in his career at MU. He was never as "absent" as Jamil has been but acording to KO early he lacked that competive drive and viewed hoops as just one of many things he did to "have fun".
A few of Jamil's games last year so it is possible for him to play at a high level. Just got to hope Buzz can find the switch.

His athleticism makes him worth a flyer....stick him in the NBDL for a bit to see if it clicks.
I'll also think back to DJO's non-con season Junior year. Not too good. C'mon Jamil, WE NEED YOU, NOW.

No. My point was he possesses the God-given physique and athleticism that is rare and consistent with an NBA player. I was not saying he was an NBA Basketball player.
I think Jamil is going to be ok. Here's my hypothesis of what's going on. Last year, he was kept in check with senior leadership and was a cog in the machine. He seemed to be focused, serious and mostly silent. This year, he seems gregarious, loose, almost jovial at times -- even in the wake of turnovers, bad plays and general lapses. Just seems to be a lack of focus in general. This attitude, combined with the perceived lack of competition from many early season cupcakes, has him struggling to be consistent at all. Sometimes guys can just "turn in back on" once the real bell rings. I'm hoping that is the case.
I tend to agree with your point about Jamil will play better when he plays against better talent. I think this may be true in general for this team. They play to the level of the competition. Hopefully, the team will play better in the BE. We have the talent. Buzz and the coaches need to get the most out of Jamil.

The Florida game seems to disprove this point.

Kinda like this theory. Was more in the background, less pressure when doing his thing. Leadership is somewhat devoid this year and the older dudes were there to pump him up last year.

Don't forget the goose egg he put up against Butler.
This line of thinking that this team is going to play better when the competition gets better has absolutely no basis in any evidence provided so far this year. Same with Jamil.
Jamil had 0 against Butler and 3 against Florida (with 5 turnovers).
Now MU might be better because Todd is back but not because some magic switch is flipped when they play better teams.

Besides Florida, they have played to their competition in every single game. How is that not playing better when they play better competition? Seems like a pretty substantial basis.

Florida is the only ranked team they have played. Butler is the only other one with an RPI in the top 20. (And I have said that is probably our best game of the year all things considered.) Outside of that they have played a bunch of mediocre teams.
tOSU woulda mopped the deck with this team.
