Jerry Meyer @jerrymeyer247
As expected by 247Sports, (#46/#52) JaJuan Johnson has committed to Marquette. Wants to be next tough guard developed by Buzz Williams.
And just minutes later, confirmed by Jerry Meyer. Huge get for Buzz.
Great! Welcome!
That's a whole lot of "sons" playing for Buzz next year: J. Wilson, J. Anderson, De. Wilson, J. Ferguson, Du. Wilson, J. Dawson, J. Johnson and Swanson.

The paranoid conspiracy theorists will say because he's not really "all in".
The optimistic conspiracy theorists will say because it allows the roster (transfers, draft declarations) to shake out without oversigning by two (not allowed by NCAA) when Embiid commits.
Regardless, huge to see Isaac Chew paying off already. His first major get for Marquette.

I don't think I am a conspiracy theorist, but what if he is simply hedging his bets to make sure that Buzz & crew are still here? What if he really wants to play at Memphis and is simply keeping his options open? Everyone knows that MU will hold a spot for him - I'm actually surprised that more kids don't choose this option.

True, but JaJuan is a mere 7 months from showing up on campus in June. He's made up his mind. Could something happen, always. Plus I think the decision is always tough for a kid. Even my own kids were more relaxed once they had made their final decision.

And then there were just 26 Rivals150 prospects left on the board.
Friday afternoon, JaJuan Johnson became the latest ranked prospect to make his college decision.
Ranked No. 63 in the country, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Memphis (Tenn.) Southwind picked Marquette.
JaJuan Johnson said his ultimate goal is the NBA and believes playing at Marquette will help him achieve that.
Long, rangy and quick, Johnson burst onto the national scene last spring after a excellent junior season at Southwind. An strong defender with good feet and quick hands, Johnson also proved to be a bigger threat on offense than most thought he was earlier in his career.
"I wanted to go to a basketball school and really, Marquette was the only basketball school on my list," Johnson told Rivals.com. "My ultimate goal is to make it to the next level (the NBA) so I had to go somewhere they were goning to help me get there."
"They (built) a relationship with not just me but with my mom, my stepdaddy, my brother and my sister. I'm coming in with a great player, we'll have a Top 5 class. They're in the Big East, they're always ranked every year."
Johnson is very good driving along the baseline, can keep defenders honest via the long ball and is developing a nice mid-range game that features and assortment of floaters.
With Johnson officially in the fold, Buzz Williams and his staff at Marquette have added another four-star player to what is already an outstanding class of perimeter players and one animalistic rebounder.
Let's start with the guys who will be joining Johnson on the perimeter. Four-star point guard Duane Wilson is an explosive off-the-dribble scorer and playmaker who plays fast. Four-star wing Deonte Burton is a power player who finishes in transition and defends at a very high level.
Then the X-factor of the group is three-star combo guard John Dawson from New Mexico, who has lots of untapped potential.
On the interior, junior college All-American Jameel McKay is an absolute animal on the glass. Given his slender frame, you wouldn't expect him to be a rebounding force, but his quickness and super-glue fingers allow him to grab everything.
The addition of Johnson only solidifies a recruiting class that is already ranked among the top 10 in the country. This weekend, Marquette hosts four-star big man Joel Embiid in hopes of finishing out its class with the rapidly rising 6-foot-11 big man.

Well, since he's not signing a NLI until the spring... it's not like he needs to be released.
My uneducated guess? He was asked to not sign until the spring so MU can work the scholly situation out. Obviously, there is risk around him drawing attention amongst the bluebloods and being able to sign with them without issue, but I'm hopeful that he'll sign on the dotted line.

Then he should commit, Memphis is still recruiting at the SG position. If he's holding out hope for anyone it'd be NC or Duke. But, I really think that he's helping work the scholarship thing out.
If only someone had thought to ask JuJuan why he was planning to wait until spring before signing. Then we would know whether it was concern about Buzz leaving or waiting to see if Vander was going pro.
Oh, wait:
Although it looks like Johnson is planning to make his decision before the early signing period in November, he wants to wait until the spring before he signs his letter of intent.
"I'm just going to commit," he said. "I don't think I'm going to sign until the spring because I've seen the teams practice, but I really haven't seen them play. I want to see them play, so I can see myself in the system."

And:
Johnson originally was planning on waiting until the spring period to sign his national letter of intent. Shaun said that was the case because he still wanted to see how the coaches coached and the players played.
However, the official visit brought most of that to light, and Shaun said it's no longer guaranteed that Jajuan will wait to sign. The family will sit down and talk about that decision next week.

So let's say Embiid also wants to join the party at MU and wants to sign in the early period. Can both of them sign now or does one of them have to wait until the spring based on the number MU would have committed to for schollies for next year at this point in time?
If one of them does have to wait til the spring, which one would be the one to wait, assuming JJJ does want to sign early as well?
The question is whether or not Otule is "official" for next year. If not, they both could sign.
I believe they could all sign as Otule's situation won't be finalized until after the season and McKay doesn't actually have to sign anything.

Buzz indicated that as far back as the regular season last year, but Otule himself said he's already been approved this past month. He graduates in December, so he'll be taking graduate classes starting in spring and if he continues into 2013-14. Personal opinion, I really think Chris will be back. I have no idea how things will shake out otherwise, but unless he suffers another injury, I see him suiting up in the blue and gold again next year.

Technically speaking, does "qualified" mean he's been officially offers a scholarship? That brings up another question. Do current players sign a NLI each year? If that's the case, if CO hasn't signed the NLI for year 6, does this give MU the wiggle room it needs for JoJo?
Chris playing in 2013-14 shouldn't be an issue if both MU and he want him to play... I think you'd be crazy to not have him stay another year, but I guess we'll see how this year goes. Lots of great players want to suit up for the Warriors... not the worst problem in the world to have. [scholarship/financial aid papers are generally signed once a year, for a year]
No Donna Summer for me yet tonight.. I've been in gyms all day. Scouts Focus camp & Hardwood Elite/MN Pump N Run (which is the same name as a technique I have mastered)...
Watched Bronson Koenig a bit again today.. have seen him plenty.. but, I would say this - he's adding strength.. Wisconsin won't be fretting about their PG situation next year.
There are some younger kids in and around the Twin Cities that I _really_ like (besides the super obvious)..

Scholarships are renewed yearly. Buzz said at Media Day that Otule has all the medical documentation needed that will get him another year. He did then add he has not officially been granted the waiver yet (as it has to come after the season). Remember that MU has Compliance staff who worked at the NCAA. Very buttoned up.

I'm starting to think this will be what is going to happen. I've seen Duane multiple times and in my honest opinion I don't think he's ready to be the starting point guard. A kid at his age can make huge strides in a summer though so we will see. But as of today, I don't think he's ready to take over the point. It's hard for me to say Jujuan will start as I've never seen him play live but I think he does expect to play immediately and would be very upset if he wasn't getting major minutes right away.

Agreed....Vander is a PG in the NBA if he even makes it there right away. He has still a long way to go with his body and his shot to play SG and guard that position on a nightly basis.
None of these guys declaring to come out and enter the NBA draft are really ready skill wise...none of them. The NBA Draft process is a joke and makes a mockery of the league.
It waters the NBA Brand and product down a great deal to me because few stay in college to be coached and grow and develop because they have those around them who tickle their ears and massage their ego's and blow kisses when critiquing their games or shot. And that is well and good for them so let them go...
But to me if Todd Mayo and Vander return that is where we might have the question. And also, I have seen Duane Wilson, and he can start at PG if we are talking about offensive skills.
There was really no one for him to guard in high school so I have not quite assessed his defense as much... but he can stay in front of his man.

That is why I put "official" in quotes. I don't exactly know the status, but he is listed as a redshirt senior on the roster and to get a sixth year, you have to wait until your eligibility is used up - at least according to everything that I have read.
Christ oops....I mean Chris Otule <yeah him too> will return. I have seen and spoken with him and I get that indication as well. He's my guy. Just a great young man. He is very excited and enthused to be back for one more year!
I am looking for big things from him and MU this summer and next season.

I told you guys this 5 months ago and I was either ignored or bashed! ha
I Know 100% the ONLY way JJJ was gonna sign was if Vander entered the draft!
JaJaun is the real deal and wants to/will start at Shooting Gaurd next year. He will leave for the draft prolly after his Sophomore year, He is that good. I live in Memphis and seen him play a ton of times.
Did I miss something? Did Vander enter the draft?
So your theory is back when he signed in November, that he knew Vander was going to have a breakout year and would start? Cmon....
JJJ wouldn't need to start to have an impact on this team either.

Why can't they both start? If JJJ can't beat out Juan Anderson for a starting job then he's not the "real deal".

The fact that Juan started should show you that starting at MU isn't really that big of a deal. Believe me, if JJJ can hit a jumper consistently and defend, then he is going to play plenty of minutes.
Dion Waiters didn't start at Syracuse. Worked out okay for him.

If you think that being picked 4th in the NBA Draft is "okay" then I guess you're right. Personally, I prefer to aim higher.
This is so awesome. Welcome Triple J! I cannot wait to see what he can do.

Otule will return??!! This is huge news! Why didn't you start a new thread on this!? Wait... what?... Goodman announced it yesterday? oh. ok.
Do you still think Jake Thomas should be seeing more minutes on the court for Marquette?

Yeah. Buzz got JJJ to sign by promising him that Van was leaving. It was all arranged. Now Buzz is fighting in public with Van trying to make him stay. All makes perfect sense.
How is JaJuan's long distance shooting? Can we just calling him "Trey J" and make this simple for everyone?

+1 Erik Williams started at MU as well

Let's just say that "Trey J" would be appropriate.
Maybe the students can be convinced to shout "automatic" before he shoots a three.

I agree, you shouldn't leave unless you're a guaranteed top 3 pick.

The plural form is Prii. There are many Prii family in Seattle.
Not as many as there are Lezbarus.
heh,heh. Good one, Cooby.

Just wait for the team to learn Buzz is leaving via ESPN, Van decide to stay and then the new Head Coach needs to make a trip to have a sit down with JJJ's high school coach to explain how he'd fit into the offense only to see JJJ go to Kansas!
