Is it really that much of a stretch? The #6 team in the BCS in 2009 was undefeated going into the bowl season. Honestly, I think a 12-team playoff with byes for the top-4 is the way to go, simply because once you get to team #13, you're pretty much guaranteed 3-loss teams or more and no whining.
I think the conference playoff games of the Big 10, Big 12, SEC, PAC 10 and maybe the ACC are supposed to the de facto 1st round games of a "tournament".
It is conceivable a 1 loss SEC team will still make it over another conference champ with a weak non conference schedule. But this is major improvement. The bowl system is a bunch of exhibition games except for the title game. This will make for huge TV after the regular season.
