Looks like it will be about 8:30 now.
WKU's coach sounded a lot like Buzz, talking about "character" and "with regards to." Funny :)
WKU has 28 turnovers and wins the game.
WKU out rebounded MVS by 27. Yes, 27.
MVS was 10 for 22 from free throw line.
Those are some serious stats......
WKU down 14 with 8 minutes, down 10 with 4. 21-2 run in there. great ending.
have to feel for the MS Val St kids - they were crushed.
I wouldn't mind a triple overtime game tonight...
Those teams sure stink. Couldn't even make free throws. Can't imagine the bloodbath of UK vs. WKU.
UMass beat Mississippi State in double OT in the Not In Tournament. Seton Hall beats Stony Brook by 2.
edit: ESPN just started the LSU / Oregon NIT game. Never saw it during a game, is that Oregon court serious? It looks like someone just had diarrhea all over the floor.

They sure did. I turned it off. It was awful.
On a side note, I did see the interview with Clark Kellogg and President Obama and PM Cameron. That Cameron seems like a likable sumbitch for somebody at his first ever basketball game.
iona plays very fast
These two teams dont play a lick of defense. Personally right now Id rather fact BYU because the fast temp forces them to play that too and their bigs dont establish themselves.

I'll be in there if anybody wants to discuss while watching the game.
Damn is this game quick! Both teams are going to be gassed by the end--fast break to fast break, with little defense.

At this pace they may score 100.
PG will be the key, both teams have some pretty good PGs.
Gardner will be exhausted in like two minutes if MU plays Iona.
I am rooting for BYU.

If they're not running wind sprints all game tonight they're not going fast enough for me!

BYU resembles the Washington Generals right now. They are standing and watching. Iona is moving. Iona looks good, but honestly, BYU looks awful.
OK, so it should be Marquette vs Iona. Unless BYU can bring Jimmer back and pull a "Western Kentucky".
this is getting out of hand for byu. i feel like byu is trying match iona's speed and cant match up
I'm hoping the line is in favor of Iona and everyone talks them up as a great team while ignoring MU so we can get fired up with the no-respect card and play as underdogs, b/c right now Iona doesn't look like a 14 seed. I felt MU got screwed with the draw and that thought is not changing.
armand is likes the worlds greatest shooter right now

Hopefully these guys cool off.

Does TruTV count as national TV?
So we probably want BYU to come back and win this huh?
im worried that marquette will get down a lot early and fast, but i have a feeling iona will have less left in the tank
Scrap the help D and guard the perimeter.
So many 3's so far
39 points with 750 left in the first? Wow
I hope we have some great transition defense. Can maybe slow them down by getting to the line. And if we can't outrebound Iona there's something wrong.
Let's hope Iona gets all these "makes" out of their system. BYU playing right into their hands. MU may want to abandon any O rebounds and just get back on D.
So, the good news is that this torrid pace can't possibly keep up into Thursday....
...right? It can't....Can it?
byu is terrible. MU is good. MU could scare the crap out of iona.
Iona looks seriously scary... (I'm tempted to say Honeybadger don't care...but damn)

If Iona plays like they are playing right now, MU loses. F***

I'm scared.

Fastest team playing. Getting back and forcing them to play 1/2 court seems to be the key.
BYU is slow and really bad. Iona looks so much faster because of who they are playing. BYU was really dumb to try and get in a track meet early. They don't have the horses. Iona has not had to guard BYU because of BYU. Thursday will be a much different game for Iona. They will play against speed and guards that they will have to guard.
You all just wait until that caffeine free five hour energy kicks in at half time.
they are very small. glover is one of two big guys, and he is 6-7. everyone else is 6'
Iona is shooting 68% right now. I'd be surprised if they keep up this pace
Sure glad we got the #3 seed so we could have an easy 1st round game.
/teal unnecessary
They aren't going to shoot 65% and better than that from 3. all game. or thursday.
Have not seen much of BYU this year, only one other time. They are very slow, unathletic and poor shooters. I think DePaul is a better team.
Iona can shoot and really is active. It will be interesting when to see them when they face a team that can go toe to toe with them - speed and athletically. Need to really limit the open 3 looks. As I said earlier, scrap the help d and focus on the perimeter. They penetrate, but not a lot.
MU will pressure their guards. Likely get them in foul trouble.

They won't have to. They'll have 70 points at halftime.
Marq better start strong, or it will be over by halftime on Thursday.

HA!!
Btw, thurs should be.... Fun.
ha!
Iona has 16 points off turnovers and a 15 point lead. Hmmmmm.
If BYU can put up 40 on them in a half, I like our chances.
They gave up 40 first half points. We should be able to score on these guys.

Great minds think alike.
Halftime reflection:
1st quarter... BYU defense sucks.
2nd quarter... Iona's ball protection sucks.
MU is going to have a field day with either one of these teams.
Funny how the thinking has changed so quickly.
Living in Jersey, I've seen Iona plenty of times. Knew exactly what MU was in for on Thursday. Offense can scare but defense always is weak.
otherwise there's a decent chance we get bounced if we go man to man on their backcourt.
Like how BYU extended out their guards to defend the three.
It's an impressive pace. Fun to watch, but Gardner has to be cursing up a storm watching this game.
If Marquette turns the ball over 26 times again, the Iona players will look like blurs. If Marquette can break the press without trying to dribble right down the middle, this Iona team looks a lot different. (Looking at you, Junior...)
Once BYU stopped turning the ball over and playing out of control, Iona didn't score for the final 4 minutes of the 1st half.
Sure BYU scored 40 .. but part of that was them trying to keep up with the pace Iona set. BYU was firing up shot after shot, many of them quick and bad. They scored 40 points because they had 50 possessions.
Marquette doesn't take quick shots once the D sets up .. they try to get 72 paint touches while the shot clock winds down.
For all you coaches out there, how do you stop Iona? What should Marquette do on Thursday? How do we prevent Cadougan from being a turnover machine against these guys? These guys make Louisville look slow.
Is anyone else watching this online via the March Madness Live site? If so, are you getting large blurry bands on the bottom and right side of the screen? If so, is there something I can do about this? Thanks in advance.

Do you remember years ago when Loyola Marymount played Michigan? The Wolverines tried to run with LMU and got smoked. I don't know if that is the answer, but I'd be tempted for us to play in a half court game and try to slow things down considerably.

Not a coach, but:
1) Break the press by throwing the ball over the top. Junior and DJO tried to dribble through the press via "crossovers" and got picked to shreds.
2) Slow the game when they can and Wilson, Crowder and Gardner (if he is breathing) should have a field day inside. BYU has had success doing it, but was chucking up 3's.
3) Junior better have his A++ game. Those guards (even BYU) are quick.
4) Mayo will have a huge role in this game if MU plays Iona, huge.
5) Maybe Iona blows their load tonight and MU gets the intimidating factor going.

Machado was just whistling Sweet Georgia Brown last time down the court.
I think a bit of press after made baskets and FTs will wreak havoc on Iona. Get to the line, make the shot, pressure them. Not exclusively, but in spurts, which could also help DG get into the game.
Iona looks great in transition and making wide open shots, but force them to play half-court and they look human.

Iona has scored 7 points in the first 7 minutes of the second half.
Marquette could hang a hundred on Iona without taking a 3
Im starting to think Id rather play Iona. BYU when they are not playing dumb and trying to force things have much more of an inside out attack with some size and pretty much everyone on the floor can shoot it when they move it around.
Bump
7 pts game !
Get on your horse fellas!!!
Kinda of looks like a Marquette game with the speed and big runs each way......let's hope for a great game in rd2 Thursday night. Go Marq!!

Thinking the same. I know I'll get some grief for saying this, but BYU looks like a more traditional team (I guess for more than one reason). Iona seems a little more gimmicky to me and if we take them out of what they like to do, they are lost. They look a lot less daunting when you aren't watching their best half of school history.
Where BYU has some longer athletic guys in Davies and #34 (Horslock or something). They also seem to be decent in the half-court. I would pressure the heck out of Carlino. Granted, the Badgers beat BYU pretty soundly.
I'm feeling much calmer during this second half.

A gael is a person of gaelic descent.
Iona is just terrible inside and BYU finally got the clue.
Slow it down, pass around the perimeter and then inside. If no shot, kick it out.
Carlino and that other BYU PG are good, not like Machado, but good.
Iona shots are coming up short, they are tired.
What a comeback!

Me too. BYU can use this same strategy they used vs Iona against us to make it a close game.
I can't remember ever seeing a team have a 40-point disparity between halves like Iona has had tonight. Even in some of these tale of two halves Marquette games over the past few years, nothing like this.
I would suspect BYU will zone MU tomorrow. To say the least it was very, very effective in the second half against Iona.
What a strange game, I can't recall a team coming back from 25 down to win by 6. 31 point differential.
Iona scored 17 points in half, to include one with like 10 seconds left after 55 in first. Amazing.

All the more reason that was so ugly for Iona. That was one of the worst halves I've seen a MU team play, and there was still "only" a 33-point disparity. They ended up with 38. Wow. And how much tougher is it to see the second half be the bad one. At least at HT against UNC we knew it was over.

Good adjustments coupled with epic meltdown. It appeared IONA tried to go into a clock running offense with 15 minutes to go. Then they tried to recover by shooting 30 footers over top of the zone. Oh and they let Hartsock shoot jumper after jumper with limited pressure.

BYU had an abysmal game plan to start the game that played right into the hands of Iona. They took quick bad shots from deep that led to long rebounds and easy transition points. Iona also hit just about every pullup three they took. BYU had a considerable height advantage that they didn't exploit until the second half for some strange reason. Once they worked the ball around to take high percentage shots Iona's transition game was neutralized and they couldn't do anything in the half court. 17 points in 24 minutes is putrid half court offense. We would have mopped the floor with Iona simply by not taking ungodly stupid unforced shots early in the shot clock like BYU did in the first 15 minutes. Even if Iona was able to get out in transition there's no way they were gonna hit 60%+ of their field goals against us like they did in their 55 point outburst. We easily would have made them play like BYU did in the second half.
