Title: Buzz and UConn Student Section?
Post by: Aughnanure on February 19, 2012, 09:22:07 AM
Rumor going around Twitter and UConn message board that Buzz was "taunting" or "egging on" the UConn student section at the end of the game.

Heh...that's pretty funny.

I love the justification on that board..."Hey we can act like morons because we are young.  He is older and makes a lot of money so he should have to just take it."  Really?

It's not like he was getting in fights or going back and forth...if he said anything, it was one line.   I have no problem with it.

They seem pretty certain we'll go home on the first weekend.  I guess kicking their ass on their floor didn't impress them.

Based on those posts (most from what they heard from their brother's coworker's stepsister's 2nd cousin, or this Emily Noonan chick, who I'm assuming is the blonde w/ the perm), Buzz "clapped towards the student section and said 'What's up (possibly with a 'now')".  You'd think, given the behavior of their students on national TV all day that that wouldn't phase them.

I'm sure the students were being very cordial and giving him suggestions about where he could get a postgame snack since they think he's too thin.  They're just hoping it's not cancer.

This.

Frankly, with Buzz's concentration on the game, numbers, paint touches, turkeys, whistle blows, minutes until the next practice .. I'm surprised he'd even notice a student section.

In conclusion .. Must suck for UConn to have MU own them on their home court, 3 years running.  Gotta have a villain.

If they were offended by a clap and a "what's up?", they must have  called  in the World Court for Huggy or when CTC visited with his caffeine induced clapping fits.  Thank goodness Bo Ucker Ryan doesn't visit Storrs or the state would come to a complete halt.  This screams:  Owned

No problem with it either, but let's not paint their whole board that way either.  We do that too much here. Some of their posters stated the comments you mentioned, but there were also some calling out their fanbase and student section as morons themselves.

Too often here we take comments from just a handful of other boards and then we paint it as if that is their entire fanbase.  Dimes is famous for this after an IU loss.  When Wisconsin loses we have the obligatory threads that do the same thing.  Then others get all out of whack when some of our moronic posts end up on our rival sites and we say it's only a few bad eggs here.

It did seem like every time they showed the UConn student section, you could read their lips and see an expletive coming out of their mouths.  I doubt it was constant, but the camera work sure made it look like it was constant.

I think its pretty funny that they would all of the sudden be so snobish about academics.

Well, with Pitt leaving soon we could use more of a rival to take their place so I guess it's a good thing we're hating UConn more by the day.  Jucos?  Well, our academics aren't so crappy we were banned from the NCAAs.  A clap and "What's up now"?  Better than the student section looking like a trailer park the entire game.

Meh, how many times has Pitino yelled at MU's student section?  It happens.  D1 coaches are in the position they're in because they're passionate.

At least our coach bothers to show up to our games.

Vic, the game depicted was at the Arena. Do remember ND students throwing stuff at the MU entourage as they walked, victoriously, to the locker room at the Joyce Center.

No, no was vs. Bucky. My point is Al wasn't gettin' into it with fans since this was a home game. Kim and Kerry Hughes' father is shown flippin' off McGuire. That John Powless, UW coach, in the foreground.

This. I am not a big fan of Buzz yapping at the student section, if in fact he did, but from all accounts it was minor and most likely the result of 40 minutes of listening to those yahoos open their traps.

Coach K and Roy Williams have both been much more ridiculous at various points in their careers.

My cousin picked up four good tickets from a friend to an MU Cincinnati game when we were in CUSA and Huggins was the coach. The seats were right behind the Cincinnati bench, about 3 rows up. One of the guys could not make the game, so my cousin gave the extra ticket to Freeway. The whole first half, Freeway was yelling: "Huggins you bitch. Huggins you bitch. Huggins you bitch." It really was funny when Huggins called a timeout and walked about four feet out in the court and crossed his arms and just looked at Freeway (and us) with this wtf look. Huggins didn't have him removed. One of the people next to us got the usher to get him out. Loved the look Huggins gave him.

In addition to these tweets:
Buzz Williams egging on the student section with 16 seconds left. "What's up now?!". #notclassy

A professional classy coach would never stoop that low"

I don't hold 17-21 year old students to the same standard as a professional, grown man who is the face of a D1 basketball program.

Let's put this one to bed real quick...

As far as I can tell, there are two "original" sources of the 'Buzz eggs on student section' tweets: John Silver (@CBSSportsUConn) and Emily Noonan (@emilynoonan).  The former is a UConn grad who covers the UConn football beat for the Journal-Inquirer but covers basketball only as part of CBS Sports' Rapid Reporter network (a/k/a freelance journalists who provide coverage of a specific team one paragraph at a time).  The latter is a student-journalist (think Brad Galli with MUTV).

Both of these people have a vested interest in stirring up controversy, or lamenting the downfall of their defending national championship team.  They are not unbiased reporters in these roles, and anything they write is more in tune with an editorial or opinion page than it is investigative journalism.  When someone, via Twitter, asked Neill Ostrout (@NeillOstrout) -- who happens to be the basketball beat writer for the J-I -- if the 'egging on' rumors were true, Neill replied "Didn't see it. No Idea."

Buzz might have been clapping and saying "what's up," and he might have been facing towards the student section, but was it actually directed towards the student section or was it perhaps directed someone down MU's bench and some hyper-sensitive student decided to make a big deal out of it?  Who knows?  But when the school's own beat writer for basketball dismisses the rumor & doesn't even bother to follow-up on it, that tells me all I need to know right there.

Well said Benny.  If there is video we would be happy to look at it.  Something like what Deane did at Looeyville.  Other than that, it is a lot of conjecture.

I was at the game and I gotta say the atmosphere was pretty lame, which I'm sure can be attributed to their poor play, but it was nothing like going to a game at a full Bradley Center.  I know that's not what this thread is about, but I felt it was a pretty poor showing from their fans as defending National Champions.

More to the point. . . I love it when Buzz's antics get out of control. I hope the camera caught his reactions after big plays during that game, because there were some real gems.  Buzz's energy shows in his players and I think we all agree it's a good reason we're winning this year.  I would love it if Buzz WAS yelling something at the UConn students, if they truly deserved it. Who cares? If I'm a player that's gonna fire me up, because I know the coach has got the team's back.

I hope some of the posters from that UConn board are reading this, because they kept posting how they don't like Buzz. If Buzz is their coach, they would love him as much as we do.  Also, if Buzz is their coach with the talent they have, they'd probably be undefeated.

Glad he's on our side and I think he's going to build us into a consistent top 10 team and title contender.
