Buzz spoke at the Blue & Gold luncheon today, and said that Davante will definitely not be back for the game on Saturday. Damn.
No worries. They got this...
Gotta think if they are saying 2 days in advance that he is "definitely" out that he is not close to coming back.

I'm hoping it merely means they want to be cautious and take the extra week for UConn.
But I fear F.P. might be right.
I smell a surgery announcement going soon. It's almost a month since the injury, right?

It's been a week and a half.
And he wasn't "definitely ruled out...", at least according to others who saw Buzz at the luncheon today.
Paint Touches @PaintTouches
Per Buzz Williams, there is a "slim chance" Davante Gardner plays Saturday vs.
Cincinnati. #mubb
Jim Ganzer @theIWB
Davante Gardner not likely to play vs Cincy, Buzz Williams says not impossible,
but not likely #mubb
Lot of bummer bobs and negative nancys on this board...

hard not to assume the worst with a 280+ lb player on a bad knee and a very uncertain timeframe.

In case you are counting me in that group, I will reiterate what I said when this injury was first announced. Best case scenario is that we don't lose any games we would be expected to win with him, that he is back in time for the BE tournament, and that while he is out, others like Vander, JJones and J. Wilson step up their game and increase their confidence so that they are better contributors in the postseason. Injuries can be a blessing in disguise for the long haul and I hope that's the case here.
Maybe it is the booze talking whilst I sit at the Maple Leaf Lounge in Toronto but this just sucks.
We have no big guys coming off the bench. This is 2009-10 all over again. Absolutely no margin for error and if Crowder or Wilson get in foul trouble we're screwed.
It is like our big men are cursed. God help Durley he probably will be injured before he even comes to campus.
Okay, negativity rant off. Feel better now. :-\

FWIW, Buzz said on his show that it will be a game time decision as to whether or not he will play. He said that he has flexion in his knee now and it will be close.
Buzz had not recruited a "full deck" since he's been here. The teams are short in stature and number. In contrast when we sat watching the Badgers come out at the beginning of the Marquette game, there were 18 players running out of the locker room. They looked like the foot ball team. They outnumbered us and were taller. Buzz seems most comfortable recruiting shorter players and having fewer players on the bench.
Hopefully, 4 days of uninterruped practice for Juan and JJones gets them closer to being able to give a few quality minutes.
Buzz wants 3 bigs, 3 PGs, and 7 switchables. Next year could be the first time he has gotten there.

Aren't 5 of those guys walk-ons?

It's 3 in the afternoon and you're pounding 'em in the Maple Leaf Lounge. Life is good, don't sweat the small stuff.

There are only 13 scholarships available. Have 12 on scholarship now (including Thomas as a preferred walk on). Would've had 13 if E Williams hadn't transferred. Now we're down 2 players to injury. Not sure what else could've been done outside of taking some crappy player to waste a scholarship for 4 years.

Remarkably insightful for your second post. Well done. Now cut it out. Logic is not always welcome here.
I was at that inaugural club football game at Marquette Stadium too, Lenny. We sucked major ass, certainly kicked Detroit in hoops, though. BTW, its after 4pm in Toronto.
I was also at the luncheon. I'd bet 10 Bradley Center priced beers that DG plays against UConn. Something in Buzz's tone made me feel like a return is near.

Or people who are realistic about knee injuries. He'll be back WHEN he's back, IF he can come back. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

It lowers our chances of winning this game, but I agree we still should win this one more often than not. Not a gimme, though. Maybe this is a matchup we win in Milwaukee 2 out of 3 or something like that.

With last year's home loss to them being the 1 out of 3.
We could always get into some fist cups with the Bearcats and sucker punch Yates.

With DJO in a postgame interview saying "we zipped 'em up!" and "we just a bunch gangsters." What a nightmare.
This is not good news for De' De'.

is that related to the rapper Fisticuffs?

Buzz's comments the other day on the show make it sound like he's getting closer and that Saturday is a game time decision, which he also said.
Also, comment was made Monday night that Davante tried to play Monday, but wasn't ready yet. If he's trying to play Monday, I feel confident that he 1) will return this year and 2) Saturday is literally going to be a game time decision.
This is not good news for De' De'.
Respect! De' De' is a much better name than OX. Wtf is OX?! Joe Fulce would agree.

Never really thought of it that way, but you're right.
Big bummer on Gardner. I think we can beat Cincy without him, but it makes our margin for error pretty small.
I nicknamed davante THE BOWLING BALL!! hahhahahhaha :P

There was a pretty big (but uncoordinated) guy from our floor in Schroeder who was a starting lineman on that team. When I found out he had been a 3rd string guard at Mt Carmel HS I knew we were in trouble.
On the 3/4 o'clock issue you're right, but since Dano said the booze was already doin' the talkin' I figured he'd been there for awhile. Not criticizing, mind you - those afternoon benders can be awesome.

Welcome to internet forums
This. Have that many of you not sprained a knee before?
No, i personally haven't. A lot of sprained ankles, but never a knee. What's it like?
I think it'll be a close game without Gardner. If we had him, I'd take us 10+ points.
While Yancy is a beast, he's averaging 13 points and 9 boards in 31 minutes.
In comparison, Jack Cooley is averaging 11 points and 9 boards in 27 minutes.
We held Cooley to 8 points and 8 boards in 24 minutes due to foul trouble. Game plan will be the same for Cincy, help defense inside and rotate out to cover the shooters.
Cincy is shooting 36% from the arc, and ND is only shooting 33%. Kilpatrick and Wright need to have an off night, and don't let Sanders become a star.

I too was a basketball player like Davante, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
