Not a great start to my morning. He cited how good they looked at Lville, and thinks they are prepared for a chance to break out with a win over a ranked team. As I posted yesterday, the fact that they are the 23rd best offensive rebounding and how close we came to losing to them at home (can't quite forget beating them by 7 at home and then losing at Nova by 18 a few years ago).
However, I see real opportunity. If we win today I believe it will show we really have improved since that 4-point win at home and make me feel really good about winning at least 3 of the next 4. If we lose, I believe it points to the fact that we just need to hope to avoid any great offensive rebounding teams in the first weekend of the NCAA.
Hope our history of starting well in morning games continues in 20 minutes. GO MARQUETTE!
bring it
Digger hates MU, but I digress. It would be a bad loss if MU falls to Nova today. They are 10-11 for cripes sake.
I wonder who Digger will pick next Saturday?
I don't know guys, Digger picked ND over Syracuse. He's goooooooood.
Never any love from Digger the dog. He adds nothing new to "College Gameday"
Nova has a lot of talent, a decent amount of height, and a legitimate star in Wayns. It's also a Big East road game, which can never be taken lightly. This should be a dog fight.
We are starting absolutly terrible again.
Hey Digger, regardless of what happens today.....GFY ;)
A bad loss to lose to Villanova at Villanova? Really? I don't think so...these guys are gonna finish 17-13 or somewhere close...not a bad loss. And no I wouldn't be surprised if we lose today with how we are playing.
Dude, they're 10-11. It wouldn't be like losing to uwm, but if MU wants to finish in the top 4, this is the type of game they have to win. This is not your typical nova team. It would be a bad loss.
Guarantee they finish with a pretty solid record.
Digger is looking prescient at halftime.
"pretty solid record". So definitive.

There are no easy road games.
No, there are no easy road wins, but relative to @cincy, @uconn, @nd, @wvu... This one is easier.

Pretty sure they have as many or more 4*'s than us and a Micky D's All American or 2. They're very young, but they're DEFINITELY talented. And as stated before, it's a Big East road game.
Who cares. All that talent is under. 500. I expect us to beat 10-11 teams on their court.

yeah, but last 6 they've been 3-3 with the 3 losses being Syracuse and games decided on the road late at Cincy and Lville. That's a pretty good 6 game stretch for an improving young team. It's a good win if we win adn good loss if we lose in my book - classic toss-up in my book so let's go get it.
So posters on Scoop hate Digger for being accurate at his job? I hate him for coaching ND.
Digger was wrong!
Can anyone snag a clip of him either saying he was wrong and/or praising MU?
Would be a clip for a lifetime.
Digger, go back to Mishawaka and get a "haircut" from Armando!
...and how did he get the name digger again??? ;D suck it!
Digger's a tool. Did anybody else see when he was talking about "what makes a great coach" during gameday and picked up Bobby Knight's wrist to talk about his wristwatch. I wish Knight would have thrown him across the floor for using him as a prop.
When you need to hold a colorful magic marker to be "colorful," you ain't. Digger envied Al but could never touch Al's "color" as a coach or analyst.
Digger = still jealous of Al and his success even after all these years. What a d-bag.
Digger eats quiche! ;D

Throwing Digger like a folding chair would have been epic.
Although... as much as I dislike Digger, I dislike Dukie V even more. I may be the only person who feels this way, but it's time to send Dukie V off to the nursing home. He's epic bad when calling games nowadays... he's really fallen off the past few years and is only going off of reputation now.

Well, compared to what he's become of late, he used to just be "bad-to-middling." Now it's a toss up between the announcers from Paradise Jam (excluding Laura, obviously) and him as to who I'd get angrier watching call a game. I'd rather listen to the homers on the Big Ten-welve Network call UW-MU than him, any day.
And I just threw up a little in my mouth writing that, too...

Vitale is such a trainwreck.
:P Richard "Digger" Phelps. Oh how I miss watching Al out-coach you over and over again back in the day. And Al had more color in his little finger than you and Billy Packhead have in your entire overweight bodies. Once more the wrong person was taken too early.
Like the lobsters below, Please, Please, bring me a winner!!
GFY, Digger. You hate Marquette, you jealous douche bag and once more you are WRONG about the Warriors...

First of all, he wasn't accurate.
Second of all, Digger picks Notre Dame to win every game they play, so giving him credit for Syracuse is silly.
Third of all, Digger is almost impossible to listen to. Nothing gets me switching to another channel faster than when he and Bobby are on the same ESPN panel discussion. Ugh.
Digger is a ND lifer and will always hate Marquette. MU beat his teams regularly.

I understand he also got a lot of beer spilled onto his person during ND trips to MU. ;)
Pay no attention to what Digger says. This is the same man who predicted, after Walter Downing had 20 and 13 to lead MU over ND, that Downing would be a top-5 pick in the NBA draft. Downing went in the 10th round (back when the NBA still had 10 rounds in the draft).
Will wager a large amount of money that Walter Downing never led MU to a victory over ND. And yes, Digger did occasionally take a barley shower. ;)

I think the people who do not like Vitale are not old enough to remember what announcers were before Vitale. They basically talked about the game in a lifeless manner. Vitale brought enthusiasm to the announcing world. That is why he has been so successful. He was a pioneer in being a fan of the game he was watching.

Nope, I am definitely old enough to remember announcers before Vitale. Grew up with Hot Rod Huntley calling the TVS Game of the Week.
Vitale is an obnoxious bore. Pioneer? Please. He tried to emulate Al. Al was the pioneer. Dickie V was and always will be a wannabee.
Any defense of Digger on this board deserves the same treatment as the Grammatica wannabe in that beer commercial. New York + Notre Dame = long running basketball announcing career.
The guy is terrible. He makes more mistakes than a frosh in Staudacher's
SP 101 class.

Perhaps the "Diaper Dandies" commentary is really about the Depends Vitale no doubt is wearing these days.

He's been out of coaching for so long he's really not equipped to give good analysis. So whe he offers some big call, yes, GFY Digger. It doesnt even matter if MU is in the conversation.
Great grind for the win today!
