Title: What is the students excuse for this game?
Post by: 🏀 on December 10, 2011, 07:58:57 PM
#11 in the nation.

Lots of press.

Decent opponent.

Upper bowl is scarce to say the least with one minute to tip.

These threads complaining about the student section are very tiresome.

In case you did not notice, MU has 8,700 undergrads vs, say, 42k for UW.  They get about half the student section to most games, tonight a third.

When GB plays in Madison on a frigid night before exams, are 15,000 willing to go to the Kohl center to watch a blowout?  Until you can prove the answer is yes, let's stop with this dumb line of reasoning.

My point is MU gets a very high percentage of the student section to the games.  They play in a stadium that is over twice the population of the school.  So, it has to be full of Alumni that sit on their hands.

If you perfer, maybe MU could downsize and play all their games at the AL in front a rabid student fans.  Then we can also join the Horizon league as well.

Actually, the answer is yes.

Actually, the answer is yes.

Not even close.  Kohl holds 17k and maybe 8k is students.  No way 15k go to see a blowout on a 25 degree saturday night before exams.  But its unfair to compare MU to a giant state school.  Let's compare it to schools it is similar to ... Villanova and Georgetown.

Troll the 'nova boards and they say EXACTLY the same things about their students.  If fact, it is so much worse at 'nova that many games at played at the Pavallion that seat 6,500 versus the 18,000 at the spectrum.  'nova wishes they had a fan base strong enough to play every game at an 18,000 seat areans but they do not.

Similarly Georgetown play in the 20k seat Verizon center.  Last year GU season average attendance was 12,675, just shy of the 2008 record of 12,955, the highest season average attendance in school history.  http://www.hoyabasketball.com/records/attendance.htm

By constrast, MU season average was 15,586 last year and has averaged more than 12,675 eaach of hte last eight season (reaching back the C-USA days).  GU wishes its fan base was as good as MU but it is not.

P.S. MU is the only non-football school to rank in the top-20 every year since 2003

First, I will fully disclose.  I live in Madison and have for 15 years.  Secondly, you know nothing of what you are stating about it.  Last, you were the one who brought the comparison, not I.  So since you are speaking out of your hind end, why continue?   ::)

What's your point?  That UW students as a percentage of the enrollment support their basketball program more than MU?  Again MU has 8,700 undergrads and UW has 42,000.  It's a lot easier with that many students to fill an on-campus arena that is 35% of your enrollment versus an off-campus arena that is 230% the size of MU's enrollment.  So adjusting for these realities, how do you say which school has better attendance?  I said UW was the same, not worse.

-----
Since you felt it necessary to insult me .....

This thread is about the "lack" of student support at MU games so let's stick with that.  I'm not going to get into a pointless argument to justify your life in Madison.  That is is choice you made and will have to live with.  Thankfully I did not make that mistake.

-----

The hard numbers above say we have better attendance than GU and 'nova.  I don't even have to look it up but I can safely say that we have better attendance that the other private BE schools of DePaul, St. John, Prov, USF and ND (yes ND!).

I say that AS A PERCENTAGE OF The ENROLLMENT OF THE SCHOOL, our student attendance is on par with large state financed football factories like UW.  We are the only non-football school in the top 20 the last 8 years.

Why can't we accept that we have fantastic attendance numbers on both the student and general population measures.  Especially for a school with only 8,700 undergrads.

Are you drunk or high?  You made a stupid comment, I called you out and now that is my problem?  Man, give it a rest.  You were the idiot, and I do not say that lightly, that made the comment.  It was dumb and the fact you continue to bring it up demonstrates a great deal about you.

As for the fact you chose to live outside of Madison, I am guessing we will survive the loss.   ::)

No, I saw that but you did not say why you thought UW would get more than 33% of its student enrollment is see a crappy team the weekend before finals when its 25 degrees.  So, no insults ... why, or what facts, do you have that says UW basketball support is greater than MU basketball support.

My fact (from above) ....

MU has 8,700 undergrads and UW has 42,000.  It's a lot easier with that many students to fill an on-campus arena that is 35% of your enrollment versus an off-campus arena that is 230% the size of MU's enrollment.  So adjusting for these realities, how do you say which school has better attendance?  I said UW was the same, not worse.

O k, you want to continue.  IT WAS A STUPID COMMENT.  You were the one that made it.  UW does not provide 15,000 seats to their students ... FOR ANY GAME.  That aside, you made a separate paragraph.  This is what you included in it (the full paragraph):  "When GB plays in Madison on a frigid night before exams, are 15,000 willing to go to the Kohl center to watch a blowout?  Until you can prove the answer is yes, let's stop with this dumb line of reasoning."

I answered yes.  In a beautiful night with a game against a #1 team, 15,000 students cannot attend a UW game.  That was an IDIOTIC statement.  Still, UW's student section is always full.  I answered, you continued your argument, then you continued to change the terms.

Have at the last comment.  I won't read it as what I have seen from you thus far tonight is not worth the time or effort.   ::)

I'm usually the first one to call out my fellow students, but tonight's attendance was not notably bad.

It wasn't great, but finals week + weak opponent does not make for a huge turnout.

I'm more optimistic about my predictions for attendance during Big East play. I think this season will easily be the highest consistent turnout of my three years.

Also, those that weren't impressed with tonight, turn your eyes next Saturday.

Par for the course. Mac likes attacking, but usually misses the point and fails to back up his arguments with actual facts, instead using insults that really don't prove anything. I suggest letting it roll off your back.

The Saturday before finals week my senior year (1989), we played Notre Dame in the afternoon.  We partied before...upset the Irish...rushed the court...partied after...  Woke up Sunday, studied, and took my finals that week.

I doubt my life was adversely affected in any way by that decision.

Do you not realize that a large number of students are indifferent as to whether our team even wins or loses.  You can't expect the majority of the student body to be hardcore fans.  Most of the people on here love Marquette basketball as do I, but this is not a representative sample of the entire student body.  I wish we could pack the BC every game but with ~8,700 undergrads that's a challenge.
