I enjoyed this article (by MU grad Charles C. Pierce on the Grantland blog)... complete with MU-UW game discussion, Al quotes, and McCormick hall.

That is a great read.  Thanks for posting.  I had forgotten about Brell using a switchblade to cut down the nets.  Classic.

Belonging.   Either you get it, or you don't.   And I was there for the last two years of Majerus and first two of Dukiet.    Belonging.   What drives our neighbors to the west crazy as to why so many of us CHOSE MU, even though we were accepted at schools that were rated higher academically.     That feel that even though you aren't State U with 30K undergrads, you still feel like you can take them down.  And it will make an even greater story when you do.     Belonging.   Either you get it, or you don't.   It can't be explained.

That's a great article.  Makes me really wish I'd been around for the McGuire years, its so much fun to read about those teams.  Even so, I think there is still a vibrant MU basketball community! (See: this board)

"This was something that felt durable and alive, whatever it was that I was feeling about how the Warriors — I will never make peace with that Golden Eagles nonsense. Never. — played down those last 10 minutes. "

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Brell is overlooked in the annals of MU basketball. He was mentioned in a thread here over the weekend, but prior to that, I was pretty ignorant of any of the stories about him. Granted I'm but a child compared to some of you geezers.

This paragraph sums up what MU basketball means:

"Inside, the roiling carnival that was Marquette basketball under Al McGuire was at full boil. The uniforms were gaudy; for several years, they were designed so that the tail of the shirt could not be tucked in. The NCAA passed another rule. The players were an odd amalgam of personal quirks and competitive discipline. They shouted back at the coach. They won far more often than they lost. They were the heart of an impromptu community that lived within the larger community of the university. They were a great part of what made the place a home."

Relinking this in the wiki for the noobs....scroll down at the end of the season stats for the documentary video link of Al by the same guys who did "Hoop Dreams".  Let the viewer load on the left and then slide it to the 35:55 mark. You can maximize it.

great article, definitly brought back memories of  sweet times.  I was at Marquette from 1968  to 1975 (grad school included) and remember well  Goose , Meminger, Cobb, Sewell and the whole cast of characters.   I  had forgotten Brell,s  comment about the grass!!!    Saddened to hear the  Ardmore  and the Gym are no more.  The two favorite watering holes  at the time.

Ya mean like he cocked his head to the side during the National Anthem and refused to look at the American flag in protest of the Vietnam War?

I'm a sucker for any trip down memory lane - especially one so familiar and meaningful to me. By why the hell did he (paranthetically) have to throw in a misleading suggestion that Buzz was about to be put in the stocks by the Department of Education? If he wants to write an article on the "Marquette Sex Scandal" fine, but working a cheap shot into a "feel good" piece was out of line.

I don't think it's a cheap shot...but a jump from the NOW to the THEN...and an informative aside.

Possibly an example of information overload courtesy of the overconnectiveness of the internet.

The nostalgia part of the piece is nice for a Marquette fan, but I have to say that was the kind of bloated nonsense that could only pass muster on the Internet. The worst reference was not the investigation, but the ass smooching nod to Bill Simmons intramural career. Give me a break.

Wait, this Charles Pierce?   http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=27392.0

The same Charles Pierce that our fans here destroyed when he wrote something else about MU?  So we love him when he writes something non controversial, but he is a no nothing hack when he has an opinion about another aspect of Marquette?

Or is this a different Charles Pierce?   :o

Great stroll down memory lane - went to a lot of games at the Worcester Auditorium (hard to imagine a lousier Bball venue) and the Arena.

Pistol Pete wasn't the only big shot the Warriors dealt with in that '70 NIT - they clamped down pretty well on Dr. J as well.

Nice nostalgic write-up, even if the whole of the content is from before my time. That drive from Madison reminds me of my own fervent drive to get back to campus after Wade's triple-double...for some reason, I just felt I had to be in Milwaukee to celebrate that one.

And still, 4 months later, you won't let that thread die. Seriously, just let it go...it'll be good for you.

Great article, brings back awesome memories and takes me back even further to Wolf, the Burkes, Brian Brunkhorst, Carbin, Smith, and all the rest. What a ride back then. I believe the Mind Probe was a shot of everything white in the bar, and cheap.

Same guy, same agenda. As someone (Sultan, I think) pointed out, the "investigation" by the Department of Education is a procedural one that will likely result in a fine for the university. Pierce gives it a much more sinister slant while wrapping his cheap shot in a puff piece about how smart he is and how great his MU (basketball and drinking) experience was.

So, to answer your question, no. I don't love him now any more than I loved him then. He was, and still is, a tool.

Another memory from the NIT/Maravich game:  Jeff Sewell guarded Maravich in the NIT championship game and shut him down (along with Dean M)-Maravich didn't score for 19 straight minutes.  The story is that afterwards Sewell is reputed to have commented, when asked about guarding Maravich, "just give me enough money for burgers at McDonald's and I'll take care of the rest."

Cocky, yes, but he did take care of Maravich.

Sir Larwence---My memory has Jackie Burke shutting down Pistol and saying "money for a hamburger and cab fare and I'll shut him down every day". You could very well be right, just wondering.

Yup, you are correct.  Burke, not Sewell.  Thanks for correcting the record!

Sir---Only wanted to know to make sure Jackie told me true story. In early 70's he lived an eight iron away and he told me the story a 1000x. Was hoping I could bust his chops for stealing the line.

You cats are so old, you must have Half-Heimers. The Warriors beat LSU in the semi-finals. St. John's ate crap in the championship game.

Again, you are correct.  This is about the 14th time you've bailed me out.  You have to admit, however, that the LSU game was the marquis matchup.  Maravich's and all.  Pretty soon, I'll just make crap up, and see if anyone notices.......

I used to like the "play" where Brell would lose his shoe (someone stepped on the back of his Chuck Taylors) and the team would dribble the ball in the front court while waiting for him to get his shoe back on then he'd run back into the offense and inevitably get a rebound or tip in or something to the roars of the arena crowd.  I believe Bill Neary even pulled that off a few years later in a nostalgic moment.

When I googgled Gary Brell's name, I found an old interview of him in the JS.  Kind of fun to read.  Notice the "AP Cage Top 10 Ranking" to the right of the page...shows MU ranked #2 behind UCLA.

That was the standard for much of the 70's.
1) UCLA
2) Marquette

I'll have to dig this stat up again, but a great trivia question that not many get correct, is what University had the second best winning percentage during the 1970's decade?  It was our misfortune to be competing with the greatest decade-long record in the histroy of college hoops by UCLA.
