Title: 34 years ago--where were you when MU last met UNC in the NCAA's?
Post by: HouWarrior on March 21, 2011, 12:45:52 AM
Then it was McGuire vs Smith, now its WILLIAMS VS WILLIAMS. Then it was the beautiful new OMNI in Atlanta. Now its....well, ....Newark.

Then Dean Smith hadnt yet won an NCAA ring. Since then he won two, and the UNC program has won two more (total --five). Since then --Jordan, Worthy, Jamison, Hansborough....and us, well, ...Wade.

This is a big stage game between a great program vs a used to be great, hopes to be again.

Where were you when the Warriors met the powder Blue in 1977, and we last celebrated the top of the NCAA mountain?

In diapers, I was born in February 1977. In 2003, I came to MU and we went to the Final Four. Right now, I'm back at a campus bar for the first time since I graduated...karma?

I was just a kid, but was pretty much a sports nut (knew all sorts of stats, etc.)  I remember asking my dad about this Al McGuire guy and this school named Marquette.  Still remember my dad explaining it all to me.  How MU was really good for a bunch of years, but didn't win it all.  Then, when it was not expected, they make a run for the championship and beat North Carolina in the final.  It was a long time ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Although I was old enough to play basketball in the driveway with my older brothers, unfortunately the Magic v. Bird final 2 years later was the first NCAA final I remember watching.

Trying to stay awake (11 years old) and hating Dean Smith and his stupid 4-corners offense.   Though, in retrospect, should probably send him a thank you card for going to it when he did.

In Milwaukee, 1977, sophomore at Marquette, cheering and going crazy with my friends in the Avalanche. Very, very good times.

Go Marquette!

Graduated High School in '77.

All literature from MU during the college selection process had Basketball photo's all over it. It was a deciding factor in my selection of Marquette.

On a side note, (not to derail the thread) In the fall of "77 to get season basketball tickets for the 77-78 year, we had to wait in line in the mall by Joan of Arc Church. 3 Nights! The entire mall was filled with tents. What a party! Great memory.

at a bar across the street from the NY Daily News. Went there after getting off work at 8:30. After many beers, went over to the paper and celebrated wildly with Ed Birdie, Class of "74, and called bars in Milwaukee.

I signed the contract to build my house that day. That evening watched my team (on TV) beat the four corners defense and become National Champions. It was a good day.

I was in the stands at the Omni in Atlanta taking in all sights and sounds which I still remember vividly (which is hard given all the celebrating at Underground Atlanta in the wee hours of the morning following the game and ceremonies...!).

Where you had to listen stories about his son Steve Parr, the soap opera star?

Junior year in HS.  Working at a grocery store, listening to the game on the radio.

Skipped school the next day, went to MU campus and attended the rally and parade.  Screamed for Al to come out of TWC for the rally.  We were sure he was in there, and if we screamed enough, he'd come out.  Shook hands with Craig Butrym during the parade.   My college decision was 75% made right there.

At the Omni witnessing the game "live" as a member of the MU band.  After as I was leaving the building someone offered me $25 for my "Give Em Hell Al" t-shirt which I gladly stripped off because I needed the $$$ for more beer.  Thought I could get another similar t-shirt easy-wrong!  Needless to say my GPA that semester took a major nosedive.

Ringout---Isn't it amazing how college decisions were made back then? Still believe MU ball being good is the best advertising the school can do. My MU decision was made probably when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. My decision was 100% based off Al and the gang.

Hopefully there are a bunch of kids deciding schools this week around the country and they like what Mu represents.

Growing up in Connecticut, the only reason I knew of Marquette and decided to consider the school was because I heard of their basketball team.  I ultimely chose it over UConn.  My family liked it so much that my brother followed me to Marquette.

In the lounge of the grad student residence at my law school.  Two of us who were MU grads and one who was from Milwaukee were given front-row seats.

Also in the stands at the Omni with a group of fellow MU seniors. Still the greatest sports highlight of my life and best Marquette memory.

Like a lot of other New Yorkers, the only reason I was even aware of MU was because of Al & basketball. First Marquette game I saw was vs. Pistol Pete & LSU in the 1970 NIT as a high school freshman.

I was a junior at the Mug Rack that night in the old student union, along with hundreds and hundreds of other crazies.

My love for Marquette basketball long pre-dated that night, but the events of the evening, the race to the lake and the ensuing all-night partying made Marquette something special for me. I'll never forget it and pray that we will have another day in the years to come like that one.

Al was a genius the way he out-coached Dean Smith that night. Dean Smith was probably as great a coach as there ever will be in the NCAA and he did not often get out-coached by anyone. But that night... Al was at his very best.

Thanks for everything Al! We'll never forget you!
