Title: Jamail Jones on ESPN2 now
Post by: VwArrior1 on April 02, 2010, 11:18:15 AM
After the 1st qtr he has 6pts on 3/3 from the field.  He must of read this forum because he's been putting the ball on the floor and finishing with authority.

He threw down a sick dunk to score the last basket of the first period.

Too bad Doc couldn't steer any of his sons to Marquette, especially Austin.

Jones is playing like a D1/Big East contributor.  In these last two games (the only I've seen), he hasn't demonstrated the awkwardness of an unrefined high schooler.   For those of you more knowledgeable, how much of what is on display here can we expect next year?

Yeah... Any reason that Doc's boyz didn't even consider MU?

Is it me or does he look lazy on defense?

He looked good a couple times covering Rivers.

For the same reason Jeremiah is at IU and Doc does not appear happy he left G-Town ... he lets them make their own decisions.

Even if he is in HS, he won't sniff the floor at MU unless he's giving it his all on D.

I agree... as good as his shot looks. He needs to play d and hustle all the time.. I dont see that.  But the shot is beautiful..

Offensively he is impressive and it seems like he plays defense in spurts.  When he is on the ball it seems as if he gives 10x more attention then when he is off the ball.

Edit:   That spin in the lane with under a minute left in the fourth was sick!

The one thing he does seem to do well on defense is communicate. He is often pointing out where different players are.

Wow - what a spin move!!

He just was named the top performer of the game.

watched almost the whole game.. jones reminds me of a DJO in some ways because of the average defense, great outside shooting and not afraid to drive to the basket. he also attacks the offensive boards and passes a fair amount. he will fit in best at the 2 or 3 backing up DJO and Jimmy, but i could also see Buzz finding a way to fit him into the starting lineup after a while if he improves.

I just turned the game on, good to see Jones doing well, I thought the game was at 12 so im pissed. How many does Rivers have?
Title: Re: Jamail Jones on ESPN2 now
Post by: Norm on April 02, 2010, 12:28:48 PM
ESPN crew just gave him the Top Performer award for the game.

I love his offensive skills and I think he has potential on the D side.

Like jhags15 said, I'd love to see what he and DJO could do to opponents defense with their ability to shoot and drive. It will take lots of hard work on Jones' part to get on the floor, but those two together could pack a great 1-2 punch, especially if Junior gets his confidence back and can create lanes and distribute to them.

It is amazing sometimes how opinions change over a player so drastically in one game.  With that said I'm lovin what I see and I think he'll find some playing time next year.

In the post game Jay Williams said he was talking to Buzz during the game on the phone and he agreed with Buzz that the sky is the limit for him.

Also, did I hear the announcers of the game correctly when they said he is a "top student and senior class president?"  If so, icing on the cake!

I watched the second half, despite being on the court with the Kid going to 'Nova and the Rivers boy who is a top 5 recruit he was the best player on the court.  Just one game and not saying he is better than Rivers, but today he was.

Also, from what i saw he was better than the Bell kid going to 'Nova who is rated higher than him.  Taller than Bell, longer than Bell, more skilled than Bell, and more athletic than Bell.  Rated lower than Bell becuase Bell is going to Nova and Jones is only going to Marquette.

For those that have not seen him picture Todd Townsend with skills.

Its not about what hes done, as you said it is a high school game

It is about how he looks, how he projects. To me he looks like a player- Hes got great length, a nice body, a good looking stroke on his shot, and most importantly seems to be a "heady" player (there was a play in overtime where he was on the break with the lead and pulled up to give it to his pg). He also seems to drive and finish well, and doesnt seem afraid to take a big shot. Little lazy on defense, but when the effort is there he looks good

Buzz got on the phone with Jay Williams and says "When you get down there tomorrow please tell him that he does not know how good he is going to be yet. The kid has a sky of potential"

LOVE IT

This is the best game I have seen him play so far. Usually he is much more of a perimeter player, settling for outside shots. This game he was 10x more aggresive and was driving to the basket and finishing. If he plays this aggresive all the time he could be very good.

What does that mean?

... that a lot of a players rating depends on where he goes to college.  For instance, anyone signed by Duke gets rated higher just because Duke signed them.  Same kid passes over Duke for MU, then he gets rated lower because MU is not as highly thought of as Duke.

So why is Jamil Jones' teammate Bell rated higher than Jamil?  Because Bell signed with 'nova and 'nova is thought to be a better program than MU.

Do we know if Jamail will actually play, sit, start, etc.? I mean Jay May and Erik were top 100 picks and never played. I know there was more to the Jay May than just sitting but is it even possible to tell wheather Jamail will be a factor in his first year because we all know how Buzz likes his experience (which I cannot blame).

I wouldn't exactly call the 16.3 minutes a game that Maymon played (seventh on the team) "never played".

Mrs. Rivers was formally Marc Marotta's steady girlfriend for a while before she and Doc hooked up.  Marc was rather pissed when he found out.

Sometimes the kids feel they have to live or exceed their parents legacy. That's why I heard he didn't consider MU but followed Crean at IU. Really woulda been sweet to see Doc in the crowd for some games.

It's one game, captain.

Bell had a better game then Jones yesterday so does that then justify his higher ranking? Or is it still because one of them is going to Villanova and one of them isn't?

The inferiority complex is always good for some laughs.

i think Jones has more upside and potential if he continues to drive like he did today. His outside shot is definitly better than Bells. Right now, I can definitly see how Bell is rated higher, but Jones has the potential to blow by him.

I just finished watching the replay of the game on espn 360.  I really liked what I saw from Jones.  He has great body controll in the lane and can finish around the rim.  He showed excellent athletecism with his two dunks.  I also really liked how he made all of his freethrows.  He didn't shoot the ball that well from outside but the announcers were praising his 3 point abilities, so he must have just had an off shooting day.  I'm really excited to see him next year, and I think he will definatley be in the rotation next year, maybe 10-15 minutes per game.  Also, Austin Rivers looked awesome, too bad he is not coming to MU.
Title: Re: Jamail Jones on ESPN2 now

yup warriors I agree with everything you said and i too have been impressed watching him make free throws the next 2 games. If you can make fts you can find PT at the college level. With his body and ability to drive that will be key, i can see him being a mix of wes and JB as he gets into his career.

And yes, Austin Rivers is a flat stud. I had never seen him before his 37 pt performance yesterday. that was in the midst of a rare 0-7 3pt shooting game. He can drive at will, as swift moves, can pass, is money at the line and can stroke from anywhere. He has some great moves.

he was a little cocky mouthing after an and 1 something like "they cant guard me". But I like it.

Attending a game with Marotta in a crowd of 15,000 is nothing compared to playing an enitre season with him on the same team (1983).

Jones looked pretty good.

Longer athlete than I expected, needs an attitude/fundamentals adjustment on D but has a ton of potential on offense.
