Awesome interview.

"I'm glad there will be some other midgets on the floor" - Buzz
"I've pushed them to the cliff everyday and God knows I tried to push them off the cliff" - Buzz

Should be said that Buzz stated directly "we ran out of gas" in the Georgetown game.

Considering that Georgetown is no deeper and played just as many games, I hate to hear that.  It probably benefited them having an easier first round game than we did.

Actually, the combined toll of defending players 20-30 pounds heavier at 4 of 5 positions (other than DJO), for 3 games in a row, will effectively wear you down.  Not sure MU gets enough credit for how it battles so hard, being undersized at 4 of 5 positions - it takes a TON of energy to defend more weight/strength.

That argument loses a little steam when we were playing Villanova in the second round...they're no bigger than we are.

Pretty sure Scottie Reynolds goes about 4 inches and 25 pounds heavier than MO or Cooby.  Pena 6'8", 235, has 20 pounds on Jimmy, Yarou, 6'10" 250lbs has more size than Hayward.  And then follow it up with a team like GTown who outsizes us at every position..it adds up.

Not sure why you'd discredit MU's conditioning, or allude to the notion that we may not be conditioned as well as GTown players.  This team has basically gone 6.5 deep all year, and that effectively wears you down over the course of the year.  To that point, you'll probably counter - that's why Buzz should have gotten Williams into more games earlier in the year, etc..yet Williams just isn't ready for big time action yet.  Other than Fulce and Buycks - the team has had no real bench options, and even Buycks was out for 3 games at end of season.

I'm not saying that they weren't gassed...it did seem like they were.  Also, I have no desire to see Williams or JC playing more.  Just that "I hate to hear that" as an excuse.

It's not an excuse. It's reality.
MU - on the heels of two intense, draining games - traded blows with a bigger G'Town team for about 30 minutes. Then they faded badly down the stretch. Ray Charles could see that fatigue had set in. Is that the only reason MU lost that night? Very likely not. Georgetown simply was better. But fatigue sure had something to do with the end result, especially with how poorly Marquette played the last 10 minutes.

We are a jump shooting team.  Georgetown can pound it inside.  Tired legs will affect jump shooting teams more.  Not an excuse for why we lost the game but we needed to have a lot more points in the paint to keep it competitive and we just weren't able to do that against GT.

Not only that, but you have to expend more energy to deny the entry pass into the post.  What did us in was the terrible start to the game.  Took so much out of the team to claw back in the game.

Buzz noted that GT played as much as we did (third game in three days).  He said we depend on energy to get the game in our flow or pace.  Without that energy we let the other team dictate the flow or pace.

Buzz noted that after 30 minutes it was a 1 point game (48/47) and that as we scored only 6 points the last 10 minutes.  That is when fatigue set in.  He also called it the worst loss in his two years and an aberration.

Also Buzz made a passing reference to "difficulties in the first semester."

Is this a reference injuries to Outle, Yous and Junior or a shot a Maymon?

When you running low on gas, the smart move is to stop and refill rather than risk stranding yourself in the middle of nowhere just to see how many more miles you can get with the needle on E.

Sure, Buzz could have pushed the team to its limits on Friday not knowing if it would affect the outcome, but at what cost?

March basketball is a marathon, not a sprint.  Save the fumes for when your tomorrow is on the line.

Agreed. Though it wasn't "a shot" at Maymon. He was simply stating a fact: One of the difficulties had to do with losing a player who was being counted on to contribute.

That's why our lack of depth has me really concerned about the Washington game.  Not the conditioning part, but if we can play defense without fouling.   If the officials let the teams play and swallow their whistle MU wins by 10.  If Washington keeps attacking the lane and drawing fouls --- which will basically be their game plan, both Hayward and Butler will foul out, and we lose by 10.

I love listening to any show Brian Hanley is on during March Madness. Since he is a proud Marquette alum, he makes a point of bringing our school quite a bit.  He has our players/coaches on the program every year.   We should add him to our famous almuni board.  The second best Chicago media personality (a close 2nd after Mark Suppelsa).

Brian Hanley is a great guy.  Robmufan and myself went on a tour of the score studios once followed by a trip to the Billy Goat Tavern.  Both Rob and myself had on Marquette t-shirts so Hanley bought us a beer.  Buzz had just been hired at the time and Hanley seemed pretty excited about his recruiting abilty but didn't know much more than that.  We talked MU hoops with him for about 5 minutes.  Despite being the Bulls beat reporter for the Sun-Times he still holds a grudge against Kirk Hinrich.

We also got some love from Doug Buffone whose daughter went to Marquette.

I couldn't tell you how many he finished with.  I never saw the end of that game and never once looked at the stats.  I don't think I even read the paper the next day.  Straight to recycling!

Buzz is great.  He has definitely sent the doubters packing.  There are a few "feel good" stories about the guy too that we might hear about during the tourney.  I am not sure how much you will hear in the UW game.  The IT name story and the Hayward and Pondexter (sp?) teammates story will probably get the most airtime.

Thanks for the compliment/comment.  Almost all of us here feel the exact same way, yet a few cynics and skeptics remain.  I know Buzz has a lot of respect for Lorenzo Romar, has made several mentions about him being one of the class guys in the college coaching ranks.

The interesting thing is how quickly things can change.

A little more than a decade ago, Marquette was a huuuuge step down from Iowa.  Thats why they were able to attract a big-name up-and-coming coach like Steve Alford (widely viewed as heir apparent to Bobby Knight) and MU had to choose among an unproven assistant, a low-major coach or a major program washout looking to rehabilitate his coaching resume.  It wasn't even a possibility that MU could attract a coach with Alford's pedigree.

I think Monroe is the third most TALENTED (not saying the best) player in this draft behind only John Wall and Evan Turner. Great, great passer. Runs the floor well. Huge body. Definitely an NBA player for as long as he wants. For his sake I hope he wants it. GTown big men historically are good NBA players, though.

What a coincidence that a decade ago MU chose A (an unproven assistant) who now is well on his way to becoming C (major program washout looking to rehabilitate his coaching resume). He was a better choice then than he would be now.

Right I don't disagree with you and things certainly could change but RIGHT NOW that would be a huge step down and considering all the circumstances I don't even see how that would merit a reference in an interview.  It just seemed odd.

He just happened to ask the women the same question twice while she was in the news studio live. Oops, I forgot to mention it was within a week of 9/11 and he mentioned her family was in studio numerous times. Oh yeah, that guy is a real class act!
