I thought Providence was starting something good last year. They had a very good season and looked to be on the upswing. This has to be a very disappointing year for them. They are getting KILLED by Seton Hall right now. They have given up 66 points with 16 minutes left. Not good.
They just showed that they have given up over 85 (EIGHTY FIVE!) points per game this year, highest in the history of the Big East, and allow other teams to shoot a whopping 52% from the field this year. Those are some AWFUL defensive numbers.
Anyway, it's pretty interesting that we beat just about every team that's playing in the Big East Tournament tonight on the road this year. Not that that's GREATL impressive, but it's sort of the recipe for success. Beat the bad teams on the road and win your home games. Part of the reason we're 1 of 2 teams in the Big East since joining the Big East to do so.
except DePaul, hahahha
PC is doing the conference a "solid" right now....Seton Hall is on the bubble and anything to pump up the Hall's resume from a fellow member. I'm kidding, of course....well....

;D
We used to cringe when conference tournaments came around and out of nowhere teams that were "safely" in the dance were suddenly losing to teams that were on the bubble. Always made for good conversation

Keno must have got the "tank now" memo earlier than the other teams......... 11 games ago.
Keno needs to get his guys to play some D.
They've been a weird team. They should have beaten Pitt at Pitt last weekend, losing on a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Lost to MU by 3, UC by 4, @ USF by 6 all in the last few weeks. On the other hand, blown out by some other teams. Very inconsistent team.
Funny how the coach of the year, two years removed, struggles. So, is Gonzalez less annoying now?
To be honest, the kind of ball Keno and his team just threw out there was my worst nightmare for what Buzz might be....an "all O, no D" coach.
uh oh. Lets not pile the praise on hall quite yet...

I guess it's "inconsistent" when you run the gamut from kinda bad to awful. They do have talent, but Keno can't seem to get them even vaguely interested in playing defense.
I could be wrong but wasn't Seton Hall up 100-83 in the 2nd half? The final was 109-106 and Providence scored 67 points in the 2nd half? Did anyone see this game and how Providence came back?
Hall played just stupid. Fouling, turning it over, quick shots, missed FTs. Providence got hot late indeed, but definitely benefited from Seton Hall brain farts.
Bobby G just said post-game how hard it is to hold a 30 point lead. Uh, don't do what your team just did?
Some tidbits from the Providence Board:
"Providence=AAU Team"
"I hate to say it, but I'm starting to think Keno was a huge mistake.
What part of coaching does he excel in?
This team plays absolutely no defense, on offense they are undisciplined, and they play with the emotion of a rock.
There is NO excuse for not at least attempting to play fundamental defense. Like Bilas said they don't even do something simple on defense like putting up their hands.
This program is in HUGE trouble if Keno can't prove he has a clue in what he's doing."

85 free throws attempted in the game.
Was Jim Burr cloned twice and all three of them assigned to that game?
Jamine Peterson is unreal for a guy who was the 140th rated recruit in his class. Very impressive season.
The same posters that wanted Welsh out....priceless
You'll always find someone for or against coaches on message boards. There are people on the Uconn board wanting Calhoun to retire. People on the ucla board wondering about Howland. Etc

You aren't really comparing Calhoun and Howland to Keno are you?
Hard as it is to believe their are even a couple of posters on the Indiana boards questioning the hiring of TC.
Is Jim Burr reffing the Rutgers/Cincy game too?! He just finished the Prov/Seton Hall game before this one.
NUTS... who the heck schedules these things?! How can they not say wear isn't a factor? Idiot.
I dont think thats Burr. Officials are not allowed to do two games in the same day unless another official is injured and they are filling in
you're right on the rule and you're probably right on it not being burr especially since this one doesn't show a big propensity to blow the whistle.. then again after blowing 51 whistles in the Seton Hall game he might have broken it.
It sure does look like him from the few top down views that have been shown though... but perhaps a tad bit taller.

Howland has had some success, but he is a lot closer to Keno Davis than he is to Jim Calhoun, in the grand scheme of college basketball coaches. In my mind, at least.

3 Consecutive Final Fours makes him a hell of a lot closer to Calhoun than Keno Davis, are you serious?

Accepted. Maybe this year is showing that all 3 coaches are beyond their peak (Calhoun and Howland) or over-hyped (Davis). Certainly UCLA and UCONN have completely underachieved this year and Providence was expected to have a better showing than they have put out.
All that said, I remain a bit skeptical of Howland's success. I feel like it is a bit similar to Lavin's experience at UCLA: a new coach means rejuvenation, but how long does it last and does it satisfy the powers that be? Is this the beginning of UCLA's next slide down? Will Howland bounce back?

I know Ben Howland. I served with Ben Howland. Ben Howland is a friend of mine. You, Keno Davis, are no Ben Howland.
I don't know Jim Calhoun. I haven't served with Jim Calhoun. Jim Calhoun is not a friend of mine. Is Ben Howland close to Jim Calhoun?

As said above, he is much closer to Calhoun than Keno. Howland has 3 consecutive Final Fours, Keno has....................

Fair enough. As said above, I remain skeptical of Howland's UCLA success, and don't think it will recover this year.
I'm off to bed. Good discussion.

No....I'm comparing ridiculous internet message board posters that scream FIRE THE COACH every other game. It's like reading some of the Badger posters that say OSU pays all their players or that Buzz cheats and gives handouts. You're always going to find some posters on any message board that is calling for the coach to be fired, just the way it is.
