Here's all I can get from it....""I still like Buzz Williams. He's a cool guy and that's why I picked Marquette - the coach - but things just didn't work out there. ..."
So now JM gets to play the post on the scout team...!
He was tired of playing the post for Marquette, so he transferred to Tennessee ... where - as fate would have it - he plays the post for the scout squad in practice each day.
I really wish there was some person who sit this kid down and explained to him that he's not a 2 guard when he was thinking about leaving. This doesn't make me feel good, or make me happy. It just depresses me. This poor kid would be getting 20 minutes a game here, and would probably be a big help to us. He surely would have developed a competent offensive game by now, and could really have given lazar and butler a break. Add on to the fact that he basically would have been guarrenteed a starting spot next year, and you have a tragedy. Now he is at UT, where he will fight for playing time at the same position he would have had at Marquette, against much better players. This kid's father, if the rumors are true, needs to be punched in the face.
He will end up being an above average SEC player by his senior year and nothing more. My hope is that he realizes that the NBA is not in his future and he gets as good an education as possible in Knoxville.

Addition by subtraction. I'm SOOOO glad he's gone only because it means papa is gone. It's a package deal with those two, and that makes it a good thing he is no longer here. Completely understand your logic, and it is a shame, but as soon as you factor in dad in the process, well it becomes a moot argument in my opinion. He just isn't worth it.
If you try to rationalize what went on here...try to get inside the head of Jeronne or Tim...try to come up with what "should've" been done...you are going to give yourself a headache.
Tough situation. Oh well.

Agreed. Hope it all works out for him, cuz it was a boneheaded move, and he didn't appear to "take control" of his own situation.
Now he has to attempt to take minutes away from Renaldo Wooldridge and one of the highest ranked 2010 freshman in the country, UT signee Tobias Harris. Good luck with that.
Good find Chicos. Would love to know what the rest of that article says. I think that statement that he chose MU due to Buzz, and still likes Buzz..pretty much says his transfer was all his Dad's doing -as most on here have speculated. I really think if a player has a good relationship with the coach..and tells coach he's thinking about transferring - that coach and player sit down and talk, and coach lays out the case for staying and player chooses to stay because he likes/respects the coach. At least JMay didn't throw Buzz under the bus, and he probably didn't with Vander Blue either.

Agree 100%.
It says he had to play in the post due to injuries and he wasn't able to "show what he could do".
Its all stuff we already knew.
Makes me appreciate Lazar that much more.........

Well, Jeronne will have a great seat on the bench watching Bruce Pearl sweat through his t-shirt, collared shirt, vest, tie, jacket and any other piece of clothing he has on his torso...

Why do you read a post about someone you do not care about and then respond to it? You can ignore it.

It does make one wonder about the team chemistry though. With arguable less talent, we seem to be performing better. It is just a sad situation for Maymon.
I almost feel bad for him... but I just don't. He is a quitter, he will never be a good player for UT, he clearly thought he was way better than he was, he didn't want to work hard to develop his game, and his dad seems like a real character. Do you think, if he could do it again, he would still transfer? My guess is no, he would probably stay at MU, play 15 minutes a game and be a solid contributor off the bench.
I don't know what the rest of the article said but to his credit at least he didn't take a cheap shot at Buzz or Marquette...
He didn't take a cheap shot because it seems that *HE* doesn't have any problem with Marquette... its too bad that his father exercises so much influence over him, and I don't mean bad for MU, but bad for him. He'd be getting good minutes here, and he already showed skill as a rebounder. Another 2 years and who knows. Now he'll be fighting for the post minutes he didn't want.
my buddy has a membership, i will post it tomorrow, if no one else does by then.

Then why the heck would Maymon leave? ;D
He didnt take a cheap shot because he realizes he fu*ked up and that we are better off with out him. He probably sees the remarkable season we are having and the great story this team has become all because while he decided to bail and quit when things got tough, everyone who stayed just worked harder and are having the times of their lives.

I agree with this 100%, and wish JMay good luck. No reason to be bitter, MU has gone on to have a great season. I don't understand why some have ill-will toward the kid. I don't think he quit MU, so much as his Dad pulled him if his demands weren't met. It would be hard for most 18 year old kids to turn their back on their Dad - certainly some could do it, but I don't think its an enviable situation for any 18 year old kid to have to deal with..and to pass judgement on JMay for following his father is..well...judgemental, and isn't that God's job?

I know you're referring to his time at Tennessee as a player and not like others this year at TN who will end up in an orange jumpsuit...
those others you speak of... Were quietly reinstated by the university and played a big role against UK. 1 fall guy, and 3 misdemeanors. :-)

That was never in doubt. My comment was more a reflection of how public they made the suspension, and then barely a whisper about their return through the local/national media (I live in TN).

Everyone in Tennessee has a gun in their car.
To borrow the anaology from another blogger, Maymon quotes are like a car wreck, I always know I shouldn't open them but can't help it when they pop up. I'm glad he is out there saying Buzz is a cool guy. Outside of losing him, there aren't going to be any negatives for future recruits if he is saying nice things.

This is much more interesting than the usual Crean thread. Maymon actually affected our season in many ways this year.
Our plan worked like a charm. Brought him in, lured Blue, shipped him out.

Na, DJ's team lost out on some hardware recently:

There's a mention of TJ's team, though ("Bornova") though it doesn't look like DJ's team played them in the tourney.
Here is the whole article:
He was tired of playing the post for Marquette, so he transferred to Tennessee ... where - as fate would have it - he plays the post for the scout squad in practice each day.
The irony is not lost on Jeronne Maymon but he isn't complaining. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound freshman is convinced that his future with the Vols is far brighter than it would be with the Golden Eagles. That's why he was willing to move from Milwaukee to Knoxville two months ago and sit out a year before becoming eligible at UT next December.
"I was put in a position of having to play the 5 (post) because of some injuries on the team," he said of his days at Marquette. "They decided to move me down there because I was younger and just coming into the system. I thought I couldn't be successful down there playing in the paint the whole game and doing all of the block work.
"Being used out of position, I wasn't going to be able to show my full potential, so I decided to get out of there."
A two-time Wisconsin Player of the Year, Maymon led Madison Memorial High School to the state finals as a junior and to the Div. I state title as a senior, producing 25 points and 12 rebounds in the championship game.
When he moved to Milwaukee to attend college, however, his career stalled. Playing nine games with the Golden Eagles last November and early December, he averaged 4.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 16.3 minutes per game. When the semester break arrived, he decided to relocate to Tennessee, where he must sit out until the winter term of 2010 under NCAA transfer rules.
Although he was recruited by Vol coaches as a high schooler, Maymon didn't seriously consider the Big Orange at the time.
"Tennessee was in the running but they got in late and I already was pondering my decision," he recalled. "I still like Buzz Williams. He's a cool guy and that's why I picked Marquette - the coach - but things just didn't work out there."
Maymon is just as fond of Bruce Pearl, whose flair for marketing and showmanship is helping establish Tennessee as a high-profile program.
Asked what most attracted him to Big Orange Country, Maymon replied: "The stage. Almost every game is on TV, so this program is in the spotlight. There's a lot of talent in the conference. Coach Pearl is a real genuine guy, cool to be around, easy to talk to. I feel like this is a place where I can be a good teammate."
Maymon, a lefty, is exceptionally quick for his size. He is strong enough to play the 4 (power forward) and agile enough to play the 3 (small forward).
"I'm probably one of the fastest guys on the team, as far as lateral movement and all of that," he said. "I'm not slow by any means. I could play 2 through 4. I'd be comfortable at the 2, 3 or 4 but I can't play the 1 (point guard). I've tried it before and it's too hard.
"I think my best position is the 3 ... or the 4. It doesn't matter which I play. As long as you put me in a position where I know I can get the ball and I know I can be successful, everything is going to work out fine."
Vol assistant coach Jason Shay believes Maymon is skilled enough to play some 3 and 4 next season.
"Jeronne, for his size, has great versatility," Shay said. "He's got great court awareness. He can be a primary ball-handler. He makes good decisions because the ball's not like a hot potato out there for him. He's calm, under control, and has some poise with the basketball.
"He's a very good passer and decision-maker. He can handle the basketball, create plays for himself and for others. He's played undersized all of his life but he's got a great, physical body, so I think he can finish plays on the inside because of his strength and his quickness."
Whereas he was unhappy at Marquette, Maymon seems thrilled to be at Tennessee. He appears to have a great rapport with his new teammates.
"Oh, yeah," he said. "I knew Kenny Hall from AAU ball. During my visit here I got some guys' numbers and I began texting 'em.
"Everybody's real cool and down to earth. We're just trying to have a good time, bond as much as we can. We want to finish off this year strong and get ready for next year."
"I think my best position is the 3 ... or the 4. It doesn't matter which I play. As long as you put me in a position where I know I can get the ball and I know I can be successful, everything is going to work out fine."
So he was upset with not playing the 2 and he still isn't going to play the 2?
Oh, as long as he gets the ball. Got it. Hope it works out for him but I'm glad he's no longer a part of this team.
"When he moved to Milwaukee to attend college, however, his career stalled. Playing nine games with the Golden Eagles last November and early December, he averaged 4.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 16.3 minutes per game."
How exactly does one's career stall after 9 games????? His career was just getting started. Almost comical.
I agree with you. It would have made more sense if he sat out 3 games then decided to transfer... that could be 'stalled'.
I'll just write it off to poor journalism as usual.

Doesn't matter. How does Daddy feel?
In some ways we can look at Crowder's scholarship being available due to JMay leaving. My money says Crowder produces at a higher level than JMay the next 2 years. After reading the full article, i'd say it might paint JMay as being a bit selfish, but he certainly isn't a bad kid. To a degree if I were him and basketball was probably my best opportunity at success or to make a really good living, I too might be concerned about how I'm being used..if I'm playing a position that doesn't maximize/showcase my skills. Certainly, not everyone is going to be of the caliber of Lazar Hayward.

Yes - and he was getting decent minutes. Especially for a freshman playing for a BEAST team. But the minutes weren't at the 2..... ?-(
Let's see... yep, almost every game on TV here....
A lot of talent in the conference? Well, sure, in your division. Not in the other one. The team winning that division might not make the NCAAs.
Bring on Mr. Crowder.
Wow. And he's quick?
Maymon: "I'm probably one of the fastest guys on the team, as far as lateral movement and all of that," he said. "I'm not slow by any means..."
Crowder on his current team: "We've got a bunch of young guys on the team, a bunch of freshmen, and as one of the guys with the most experience I'm just trying to tell these guys what to expect while holding up my part at the same time."
(I know they quotes aren't apples to apples. It's disillusioned vs being a team player and leader)
Crowder seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders. Glad to see Maymon gone and replaced with someone who knows how to play on a team.
