........NOW, ITS TIME TO BRING DOWN THE HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND MAKE THE BRADLEY CENTER UNBEARABLE FOR SHU.
With MU riding high right now, a letdown might be human nature. That's where the Big East's best 6th man must come up huge.......anyway, bring it on Wednesday night!

Here, here. With the possible exception of Pitt, we should win out at home. Especially if our students give us the support they're capable of.
After the HUGE win sunday im expecting the BC to be rockin' tomorrow night
Students disappointed .. the lower bowl was full, but that's just "average" now .. upper deck was maybe 5-10% full. First BE game with students back, big 4 game winning streak, Top 15 team .. that upper deck should be over 50% full.
Pitt will no doubt be a tough game at home come March. However, don't look past Villanova. They're playing very well just like we have been. They have a good PG in Scottie Reynolds, good SG in Mike Nardi, and lots of very atheltic bigs to throw at you. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they beat us at the BC. I'm telling ya'll Villanova is goona be a hard game.

As a student, I was also dissappointed with the turnout. I was able to convince my roommate to come with me by telling him that the guys deserved a great crowd tonight for their recent play of late, but apparently not too many others felt that way.
I don't get it. This was the first BE game students had tickets for, correct? The team comes home after a hugely successful road trip on the road and students arriving 10 minutes before tip could have been standing in the 200's.
A select few get a pass for evening class and kudos to those in attendance, but I'm disappointed in the rest. The semester is a only a week and a half old - nobody had to stay home to study.
Time to step up in support of the team for EVERY remaining home game, not just those on weekends!
The only difference between weeknight and weekend games should be the level of intoxication (for those old enough to drink, of course). ;)
ONeills: True dat.
CWSKeith: Good on you. Keep it up, because for all the talk on the other thread of unifying colors and rally rags or whatever, home court advantage begins and ends with the noise and the students take the lead on that.
O to be 21 and be at school with a team this good.
Even those with night class should not really be excused. I for one was unable to go to the game for that very reason, however I gave my ticket to a friend who didnt have a fanatics ticket so my ticket would not go to waste. There are always people looking for tickets so even if you are not going the least you could do is give your ticket to someone else.
What do you except? Marquette is the place where students never stop studying!
It hurts to type that.
ow...my knuckles...the student body shows for something big, and that's it. But they are slowly getting better.

sadly last night that was true...I know at least 8 or so people that didn't go because of homework/quizzes today, and also a few because of meetings(not a good enough excuse for me even if they are RA's) So if even a 1/4 of the students were there knew a person or 2 that were in that situation there goes a lot of fans. I think the next time we see a game during the week the turnout will be better, I think some forgot to plan for the fact that there was a game last night. Good thing there are only 2 more games during a weekday left.

Students had tickets to all games during break, including Syracuse and West Virginia. This was the first game they were back from break however, and the student section was actually smaller than the two games during break. Come on guys, basketball games take priority over school ;D
I have not seen one single valid excuse yet. The students are pathetic. They come for the big games, thats it, period.
Does anyone know how many students the BC can actually hold if it's filled to capacity and contrast that with the number that actually showed up to the game?
I was also extremely disappointed in the turnout. As I posted Tuesday night I thought there would be a lot of students there after the recent success of the team.........guess not. Like some of the posters i know some people that have quizzez today that "couldn't come" but you can still go to the game and study and prepare for the quiz/test...its called time management.

The the Bradley Center basketball capacity is listed (http://www.rauzulusstreet.com/basketball/nba/nbadirectory.htm) at 18,717. The box score from last night's game (http://gomarquette.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2006-2007/22shu06.html) listed attendance at 15,506.
I know the BC is only down the street but I have a feeling the thought of getting on a bus then waiting outside in the cold for that bus post game is a deterrent for students/casual fans (very weak, IMO).
Do you think if the AL was built to hold 18K there would be a larger student turnout??
Also, do you think the students have created their own monster?? Ex. Word spreads quickly of students camping out...therefore, they have to get there earlier and earlier to get a good seat and then pretty soon the casual fan says the hell with going because they can't 'waste' that much time to sit in line while ultimately ending up in the nosebleeds.
I never had to sit up stairs as a student by now my season tickets are in the upper deck near the student section. It is a completely different atmosphere...which I wouldn't wait in the freezing cold for 4 hours for. (well...yes I would but most wouldn't)
So, yes it is nice to fill up the upper deck for visual reasons but the loud/active students are already at the games making the difference.
The cute girl from Western Civ. didn't come to MU to spend 5 hours on a Tuesday devoted to MU hoops. She has a part time job, 18 credits, two boyfriends (one back at home and one in East Hall), three myspace accounts, an addiction to chai tea lattes, and a love of the ice cream machines...
Continue to beat this drum if you'd like...but the reality is--not everyone enjoys the game as much as we do.
When you're right, you're right. There's a certain level of intensity that you need to get into the lower bowl. Watching a game from upstairs is a very different show.
Maybe they need to give out free beer in the upper deck.

I wouldn't go that far. MU's student section is much better than when I was in school. The DePaul student section is pathetic. Marquette's is generally strong, and for big games it's excellent.
The quiz excuse is bs. You could be back in your dorm by 9:30. Study then. Even the ones that come are terrible. What do they do....nothing? Do they cheer anything? Chant anything? Have any creative signs? no, no and no!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there was a "Put in Kinsella" sign last night.
What is up your ass, Warrior196? You know thats not true.
I am a Marquette student, and I will be the first to admit the student section is pretty pathetic. Yes, attendance is good for big games. But there are ZERO creative signs, chants, etc. Plus, the majority of students don't care about these mid-week games against an "inferior" team in Seton Hall. Kids just aren't that invested in the team, they look at games as a social experience where they can go drink at a bar before the game then show up 10 minutes after tip-off to sit in the upper deck. I don't know what can be done, but last night was flat-out embarassing to see a half full student section that never got into the game.
There has been a lot of talk and mention about signs. Are signs really that important an aspect of the student section??? I personally dont think so
QuoteThe DePaul student section is pathetic.
In DePaul's defense they play at the all-state arena which is a 45 minute bus ride from campus. That is a huge deterrent to many casual fan students. Thats an 1 and a half of wasted time.
QuoteI have not seen one single valid excuse yet. The students are pathetic
I'm pretty sure class is a valid excuse. My class only meets 4 times a semster so if you miss one you fail the class. There are also a lot of 1 day a week classes on wednesdays so missing those would be the equivalent of missing a weeks worth of class. Both of those are valid excuses even for the most diehard fans, we're paying tuition to go to class and get an education. Basketball is just an extremely good bonus.

Here's a thought....instead of giving prizes to the fanatics with the most attendance points, maybe MU should provide a tuition discount based on number of games attended. As long as mom and dad aren't paying the full freight, that might get some buns in the upper deck.
Unfortunately, MU doesn't have enough student season ticketholders/student interest to force the issue of attendance. I'm told that MSU/Izzone has a rather tough policy regarding student seats and attendance (I'm sure other schools do as well). To be able to institute tough/penalizing policies for missing games, however, you need to have more students that want tickets than are available.
I'll accept class as a valid excuse - but then give your ticket to a friend that doesn't have class...he/she then owes you beer! Everybody wins.

I agree with that. As much as signs are funny sometimes its not like they make anything better. And what about extra credit for classes or a help in the gpa if we go to all the games...? For me it doesn't matter, I won't miss no matter what....well basically no matter what.

First, our student section is not pathetic. Considering that we play in a pro arena, we are getting a good number of kids to the BC for normal games and an incredible amount of kids for big games. The fact that the venue is so big makes the section seem smaller and quiter than it really is.
Second, no one cares about signs, chants, etc. As long as you're loud, thats all that matters.
Third, a basketball game IS a social experience no matter how diehard or casual a fan you are.
Fourth, last night was pretty much a blow out. We were in control of the game the whole time, even when they cut the lead to 5 in the second half. If the game isn't close, the crowd isn't going to be going insane. and that goes for pretty much any other school in the country.
Finally, you're a student (as am I). If you have such a huge beef about this than do something about it. Because you're a student means you have the biggest impact on solving this so called problem. Get other kids to go, make your own signs, whatever. Just quit whinning about it and act. By saying that the student section is pathetic is ultimately calling yourself pathetic.

Couldn't have been put any better. I agree, especially with the as long as you're loud part. And its funny because the only people I know that have called the student section pathetic are those fans that make it so.
You guys forgetting about this?
http://www.dailycardinal.com/sports/wisconsin-got-the-victory,-but-marquette-got-the-fans.html
I am not a student, but I am a season ticket holder. On several occasions the student section has been embarrassed by the opposing team. The Wisconsin game and the Syracuse game were pathetic. There is no f'n way Badger cheers should have been heard on National Television, that is ridiculous. Devendorf from Syracuse should have been booed every time he touched the ball for his antics. It seems to me the only time the students get loud is after a big dunk or a big run that forces the opposition to take a time out. They should be the loudest when MU is on defense, but for the most part the are non-existant. I think it shows in the record too, 3 of our 4 losses are at home this year and all 3 were very winnable with a little more energy.
To be fair, Marquette did not do anything out of the hot timeouts against Wisconsin and Syracuse.
They chanted "Trailer Trash" at Devendorf everytime he touched the ball.
I've attended both UW-Madison and MU for separate degrees and it seems pretty silly to me to put the blame on the doorstep of the students for a large and vocal UW turnout at the BC.
1. The BC is a very large venue for a school that has an enrollment of roughly 12,000 students. (not the student's fault)
2. MU has a smaller alumni and student ticket base to draw from to fill an arena that fits 19,000+ than most schools who have an arena that seats a comprable number. (not the student's fault)
3. UW-Madison is the largest university in the state by far, with an enrollment of 40,000 that doubles the next largest school (not the student's fault)
4. #3 means that there are probably more UW-Madison alumni in Milwaukee than Marquette alumni, and the MU-UW game in Milwaukee would be seen as an easy way to see the Badgers since MU games are not generally sold out (a result of MU alumni not buying up every ticket before they go on sale to the general public, again, not the student's fault)
5. Considering MU's size relative to UW's, the close proximity of the two schools, and the enormity of the BC, it shouldn't be a surprise that the BC has a ton of vocal Badger fans for an MU game (not the student's fault).
The same thing happens when UW plays Minnesota in football in the Metrodome, or UW plays Northwestern in Evanston. I think you'd be hard pressed to see any group of students get excited to play a team where there doesn't seem to be a natural rivalry via proximity, (UW & DePaul) a built-in history of animosity, (PITT) or a marquee name (UCONN most years).

Wasn't at the Wisco game, but did make the SU game, and the students rode Devendorf mercilessly. (I was sitting in the section right next to the students, with all the priests that Marquette had invited to the game. that's another story... ::)) I distinctly remember booing, chants referring to Devendorf as an anus (in less-polite terms) and the aforementioned "Trailer Trash" chant most everytime he touched the ball.
RE: those games being winnable with a little more energy, I agree, but the fans (students, alums, and otherwise) can only do so much. Hard to get up when the team shoots 35% from the floor, can't rebound, and turns the ball over on what seems like 1 out of every 3 possessions.
And my "if you have a beef with this so-called problem, than do something about it" comment doesn't just apply to students, it applies to everyone else in the BC too. If you think the BC is too quite than get off your butts and get loud. The students aren't the only ones that can cheer, you know.
I agree, I sit up stairs in one of the front rows and I get yelled at every game by some a-hole to sit down. My elderly uncle who I have tickets with got yelled at by some old man at the Seton Hall game for whistling too much. I've been a season ticket holder for a while and I can't understand the lack of support from the non-students. I didnt mean to just complain about the students, but they set the tone. Something needs to be done because MU is going to need great crowds the rest of the way in the Big East.
Oh to be back at MU in the BC again. Just come on out to visit me some time and go with me to a UCI game and you will remember how good it is at Marquette. Tonight UCI played their main rival Cal State Long Beach- and the Bren Center (which holds about 5,000, I think) was about half full (half of that was CSLB fans), and there were maybe 500 students there total. (UCI has an enrollment of about 20,000 undergrad). And this was about the best turn out all year. I know there is a big difference in program strength...but still. Things can always improve at the BC, put it's pretty damn good where it's at too.
My first year at MU was '99-'00 where we had the lowest average attendance since moving to the BC. Slightly under 10,000/game. It was difficult to find people to go to the game with. The lower bowl of the student section didn't fill up and half the students arrived after tip-off. No one wore yellow and probably a third of students didn't wear any MU gear.
A couple of years ago I saw Duke play Virginia at Cameron indoor. At the time Virginia was a low-mid conference opponent. (similar to Seton Hall this year) The intensity of the students, grad students, fans was as high as I've seen at any Marquette game I've ever seen. The intesity was high during warm-ups, the whole game, and afterwards.
The point of this is, our student section has come a long way is probaby in the top 10% of D1A schools. (roughly top 30) However, the there's a sizeable gap between our student section and the top 5 in the country. Could we be better - absolutely. Are we embarrassing - not by a longshot.
I am one of those unfortunate RA's that missed the game. My ticket was given to someone else so you cannot count that against me. Also, Marquette basketball always comes before studying for me...but when it comes down to a financial situation where i cant get out of a meeting to go to a game, I'm not going to lose my job over a basketball game. However much i want to, I need that money to continue to go here and enjoy basketball games so I'm gonna miss and give my ticket to someone else instead of losing my job...and if you don't think that's a valid excuse, you guys have some slight priority problems.

...and if you don't think that's a valid excuse, you guys have some slight priority problems.
I do not think anyone us blaming the RAs from missing the game because of the meeting.. I think they're appalled at whoever set up the meeting in the first place such that the RAs would HAVE to miss the game.
This comes from the sentiment summed up by "while MU shouldn't shut down completely during games, the non-critical things should pretty much always be rescheduled". My first reaction is if you do that for men's basketball, what about women's basketball? And then what about men's/women's soccer? And then diving, hockey, track, etc.?
But I digress and agree it was still very poor planning on the account of whoever set the RA meeting up if nothing else than because lots of those RAs probably have season tickets - majority conflict is usually enough to warrant not scheduling a mandatory meeting at that time.
So basically, our priorities are correct and we are assaulting SOMEONE'S priorities ;D It's just that it's not YOUR priorities that are being questioned (since you didn't really have a choice - which means you can't really apply the priority structure).
