Home in Lake Geneva for couple days for Xmas and went into Milwaukee for Real Chili and the game Sunday. What's being built at 13th and Wisconsin? In the 60's there was a great culinary institution on that corner. As to the game, I was surprised at the crowd. Pretty good showing for opponent and time of year.
Zilber Hall- New Student Services bldg.
http://www.marquette.edu/architect/SSbldg_rendering.shtml
Can't remember the name of the building but its going to be the "one stop shop" for students. Finanacial Aid, Admissions, Registrar, etc will all be housed there.
oh, and it's ahead of schedule; apparently it'll be done by Fall 2009
Was that where Grebe's and the old bookstore used to be located?

Grebe's = home of the $1 ham and cheese sandwich. Those things saved me
Was just back on campus today for the first time in a few, I am a big fan of the new Sweeney's Book Store location in the old "China Garden" restaurant.
Well played Sweeney.

China Garden? Pft. Super China!
Grebe's was further east at 12th. Dal's is the answer to this puzzle. Frankly, they should have built a shrine! ::)
Dal's was the first place I visited the Friday night I came to MU for Freshman Orientation. Next to it was the old Abbot Crest Hotel.

And at night the "S" was burned out and it was "uper China". Very Nice.

I'd leave Schroeder late at night, early in the morning and get a California burger (or two) at Dal's. I loved the place; it was the best after Real. My kids, none of whom went to MU, all know exactly where it was. They cringe when we drive buy :P
Dal's had the best vanilla ice cream too. Anyone remember the walkways that used to exist under Wisconsin Ave.?
ah, the California burgers from Dal's. Lettuce, tomato, mayo...delicious.
What year was Dal's?

Yes, but you have to be pretty old for that one!! ;)

It was there until the early 70's. I graduated in '70 and left Milwaukee in '73, I think it was still there in '73.
Yep, there were at least two tunnels around 11th and 13th whereby you could cross Wisconsin Ave. They were closed up around 1970.

Wouldn't be an issue if Avenue Commons was built!!!!!!!!!!!
You know how many New York kids thought those were subway entrances when they first saw them?
What is Avenue Commons? (sorry, been a while since I've been on campus!)
Dal's was there in '72, great greasy burgers!
Whoa there, youngsters. Not only was there a tunnel under Wisconsin Avenue at 13th Street, there was Milt's Hamburgers. Talk about grease!
Avenue Commons was an MU public relations disaster in the mid 1990s where the university wanted to close WI AVE through campus. They were rather arrogant toward the city and once the hospital said it would interrupt ambulance service, then it was dead in the water. Generated lots of hard feelings from the city toward MU.

although nowadays saying WI AVE. is a "fast/direct" thoroughfare is a joke! Anyone with two neurons firing does well to take clybourn/MI ave or wells depending on East/West velocity. I agree closing down WI ave. would mess up the bus routes for sure, though.
I like how they landscaped WI AVE and marked the campus entrances with columns.....but I am glad they did it after I went there. One can no longer jaywalk.
The next crap building to go near campus will be the one that Super China used to be in.

Zilber Hall is going to run the entire length of the 1200 block of Wisconsin, so it is occupying the area that Grebe's used to be in.

Yes, indeed. Check the photo at the bottom of the page from the 1968 Hilltop:

Interesting to look at the pictures in the year book. I don't remember, or more accurately forgot about the median and street lights on Wisconsin Avenues. I think it was known both as Milt's and Dal's, though I too remember it as Dal's. I looked through the pictures looking for familiar faces. I recognize one as a professor of law at St. Louis University and I another who is now a professor at LaSalle.
Funny. I remember it as Dal's when I arrived in Milwaukee in September of 1968.

Not quite. It was one vote in the Milwaukee city council from getting passed and the alderman who held the tie breaking vote (name escapes me but ironically an MU grad) asked his wife what to do and she said to vote against it. And that's what killed it. But if the wife gave a different answer, then it would have been built.
You are right that it did generate some hard feelings from locals. But a lot of those people hate the "rich kids at Marquette" anyways.
I happen to believe that it would have been good for MU and added cohesion to campus. Campus looks amazing now and it is a lot better than it was 15 years ago when Avenue Commons was proposed, but I still think it would have been great. Hence my screen name.
Actually, the 9-8 vote was for the scaled down version of Avenue Commons. The scaled-down version was a narrower road, with no median. The alderman you're thinking of who voted against the proposal was Robert Anderson. Anderson was old and crazy. I actually thought that the original version was pretty interesting and I supported the project. The scaled down version would have been a traffic boondoogle. The current situation is far better than the losing proposal.

I think you're right. I forgot about the compromised scaled down version. I like the current set up better than the scaled down version. However, I liked the version that created a unified campus the most. It would have been great.
Check out page 125...groovy and a bit odd, too!
BTW, which page was Dal's on?
