MU is the most dangerous team in the BEast.  It's very noticeable and I still think we have room to grow and get better.

Man is this team fun to watch.  We have so many weapons when we play our game.  We are a team that no one will want o play come tournament time.  If Kolek can start hitting threes with a bit more consistency, we are REALLY dangerous.  He hit a couple of huge ones tonight, and then looked like he had never shot a basketball on others.  If he finds it, it’s going to be a fun March.

What I love about this group is we are capable of winning in a variety of ways.  That's why I've used the medieval weapons analogy.  We punked Nova in Philly with GE shredding the nets and Kur owning the defensive rim.  Tonight it was Kolek early, team D, JLew being JLew, and Morsell destroying their will and confidence.  Just a tremendous, tremendous, win after a tough loss on Sunday.

After so many years of Wojo, my brain is just broken thinking of the fact MU just swept Villanova.  I mean, that can't be right, can it?  They'll recount the points and correct it by morning, right?

Shaka has made it all look so easy .. I occasionally get hit with a wave of anger toward Wojo and the many years the program galactically wasted on him and his process.

Yep.  Good coaching and personnel decisions.  Incredible how much of a difference it makes so quickly.

Shaka tying the school record for most Top 25 wins with his 6th tonight.  Wanted to repeat this in this thread.  Incredible coaching job.  We outrebounded Nova tonight 35-27.

What's great is we can play better..still quite a few careless/unforced turnovers.  I think we will see more minutes for Kam and Joplin, less for Elliott down the stretch.

Agreed, it’s a balanced league but I honestly think MU is the best team. It’d be good for MU if Providence made up their 3 Q1 games that were cancelled as far as the regular season goes. I think MU has the best chance to make the S16 of any of the Big East teams.

What season was it? I’m guessing the other season had a few post season wins included in there also.

Looks like we have one more shot at a ranked team before the post season.

My take is we're really good if Kolek plays solid hoops.  He doesn't have to go bananas but if he gives us like 8-10 pts. plus his dimes, look out.  That said I think we should axe the floating passes to Kur unless he's wide open.

So true.  We can play better which makes us really dangerous come tournament time.  With Wojo, we would collapse down the stretch.  With Shaka, we are getting better as the season goes on.  Tonight we had so many moments for so many guys.  Kolek hit some big threes along with his outstanding passing. JLew was his usual self.  Morsell put the team on his back when we needed someone to step up.  O-Max had some key plays and his D is great.  Joplin had some nice plays.  Kam, Stevie…solid.  Greg struggled yet knocked down key free throws.  Oso and Kur.

Just a complete team effort tonight against the team that has owned the league for years.

This is at least the third prediction (but first from you that I know of) in the last month or so of Elliott about to get fewer minutes. And yet Shaka obviously trusts Elliott and values what he brings to the table and keeps giving him a good amount of minutes. I mean, tonight was the very rare poor-shooting night for Greg, and yet Shaka played him despite that.

I don't have any more (or less) love for Greg than I do for Kam or O-Max. I just want to win, and I'm fine with whomever Shaka decides to play; he has an excellent feel for who should be on the court.

That Top 25 stat is fantastic. This team's got a ton of heart.

I like Greg.  However, I get nervous every time he puts the ball on the floor.  I just feel Kam will force his way onto the floor more due to (in my opinion) being a better defender, ball handler, quicker, and he's shooting the 3 better in Big East play - 46% to Greg's 44%.  That being said, Greg helps space the floor and is an asset to the team.

Greg is a jump shooter, and the last two teams have made a concerted effort to chase him off the line. Until he proves he can shake free or make the good pass out if it, he's a tough play at the moment. Kam can score off the bounce, and he also has range 2 feet further out in a pinch.

I think MU is a better team than Nova, but Nova has a better chance to make the S16. Nova has tournament experience.

What I like about Shaka is that he is playing a lot of players and giving them the chance to develop. I think Jay Wright is making a big mistake playing so few players, which does go against my argument that Villanova has a better chance to make S16. Villanova's NCAA experience gives them a better chance to win the first round game than MU. However, if they both win in the first round the advantage switches to MU in the second round, because of their depth.

Kam does a lot of good things

If you’re looking for one thing that will get him even more minutes look no further than being the second leading rebounder on the team with 5 tonight.

Yep that’s not a typo. He’s gotten exactly 18 minutes in each of the last 4 games and I didn’t see that rebounding effort coming, but I saw him sky for one and said to myself ok Kam I see you.

Still baffles me that Darryl doesn’t rebound better for his size/build and the amount of dog he has in him.

Today was different for the guards though- I’d bet my arse Shaka challenged them to hit the glass and help on the boards.
Kam 5 reb in 18 mins
Greg 3 in 20 mins
Steve 3 in 3 mins

Season highs for the first two and 11 of Marquettes 15 bench rebounds (Oso 3 and Jop 1).

Guard rebounding might be the single biggest factor to keep an eye on for Marquette if they are to take an even higher step

If that's what we had to endure to have the program like it is now continue for a long time...that's worth it to me. But yea those years were just awful and Wojo never felt right, even in the rare moments when things seemed to be going well. Shaka, even if this team struggled like most of us expected, still feels like the right fit (i.e., he's not a dope and develops gritty teams).

This is exactly the jolt the school/program needed. So thrilled.

Not only did we sweep them, we had the lead in well over 70 minutes of the 80 minutes played and beat them in low scoring game and a higher scoring affair. IMO, we were the best team on the floor for both games and Jay Wright knows that MU basketball is on their way back. Prior to tipoff to the conclusion of the game last night did I have any doubt MU would win the game. It is a nice feeling not having to "steal" a game.

Neither did the team it appears. In the postgame press conference, Morsell and Shaka used the word “confidence/confident” an excessive (and almost awkward) amount of times. Shaka is really getting these guys to not only believe in themselves, but also to believe in each other. That’s a recipe for a very strong finish to this year.

This is a serious question:  Since Dec 11th have you watched a single Marquette game where you didn't feel like we were the better team?  Maybe at Xavier or vs UCONN?  Because honestly I haven't.  That's not to say we should be 12-0 or that our opponents didn't deserve to win, but it's pretty remarkable that we haven't had a single game where we were nor right there down the stretch for a month and a half.

At Xavier is a tough Big East opener for a young team and UConn was the better team with Morsell unavailable.  Marquette has a very well constructed roster when healthy.  They have a shot against anyone.

Well, I truly think our best is better than any team in our league.  And I'm not just saying that because I'm biased.

I really like this team and am amazed how the sum has become more than the parts. Something we haven't seen since buzz.

That said, I think the Achilles heel is a physical big man inside. Our success in the NCAAT will very much depend on match-ups. If we get matchups like Villanova the whole way through, with no dominant and physical big I think  we could win it all. But if we run into someone like Illinois with Cockburn I think we'll struggle unless we a) can get that big into foul trouble or b) just shoot the lights out.

If we lose a game in the NCAAT I think it will be one where we get just absolutely wiped on the glass.

Agree with this.   Shaka has been an alchemist with this team, something Wojo could not do.   And this team could be vulnerable to a physical, wide body big.

They've actually done a good job of defending posts as the conference season has moved on.

Watson says hi.

They really frustrated him and made it challenging for him game 1. Completely changed the dynamic of the game.

The only other game from PC game #2 where a big dominated down low was Osun on the Bonnies.

We do a great job of pressuring the ball and denying post entry with fronts and weak side help. Because of that, we're more likely to see guards/wings have bigger games against us or bigs beating us on second chance points.

I seem to recall Obiago and Yetna abusing us in game 1 - we won that game because we shot 50% from 3.

Cockburn would have been a major problem for us.

The good thing is that there are only a handful of teams with bigs like that - I just hope we don't run into them or we catch shooting magic in a bottle again if we do.

I don't consider Yetna a "wide bodied" big. He's a stretch 4. I'll leave it to Tower but I interpreted his wide bodied big giving us trouble statement as an offensive threat. Ike did/does nothing offensively so I didn't include him.

Cockburn is a major problem for every team in the country. That's not exactly a a revolutionary take.

Teams that can pound the paint and rebound obviously could cause us some problems.

It is also about rebounding.   A wide body post player able to play bully ball and pound the offensive boards have and will cause MU problems.
I'm not angry, I'm not critical.  Kur and Oso can get muscled.   MU has been able to deal with it for the most part except on the boards.   Watson beat MU up in the second half and won the game at the end.

We also beat that same team by 30 on our home floor.  There's no doubt our best beats their best.  Now when it comes to Gonzaga, Zona, Purdue, Illinois (with Cockburn), Kentucky, Baylor, Auburn, and others?  No one is saying that.  However, outside the NCAA top tier I think we can play with anyone even with our rebounding issues.

Not true. Wojo was amazing at turning gold into lead.

The truth is even if H and H came back with Howard and the rest of that team it had significant flaws on the defensive end. I don't have any confidence they would have done anything in the tournament.

I'm really concerned about teams with size knocking us out of the tournament, and several of this year's top teams have size.

Let's look at the teams as they are seeded on Bracket Matrix.

Auburn has Kessler, Gonzaga has Timme and Holmgren, Purdue has Edey and Williams.  Baylor might be the one seed that is Marquette's best matchup.

Looking at 2 seeds, Arizona has two bigs, and Kentucky has one dominant rebounder.  Those are bad matchups.  Kansas and UCLA would be better matchups.

Duke has pro size and talent. They are the 3 seed I least want to draw.  I'd much rather draw Houston.  If Wisconsin is placed in Milwaukee, we can't play them.  The other 3 seed is Villanova, which the committee will have to avoid if MU plays them in the BET.

I like the matchups against the 4 and 5 seeds a lot more.  Texas Tech, Michigan State, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio State would all be ok with me.  Illinois would be a nightmare with Cockburn.  Providence is an unlikely draw.

If Marquette ends up a 6 seed, I want a draw of Houston and either Kansas or UCLA .

If Marquette ends up a 4 or 5, I'd love Michigan State for the Joey factor.  But there are several options where I think MU matches up well.

UConn is the one team that I thought looked better than us the first time around in BE play.  They're the one team I give us a less than 50/50 chance to win the rest of the way in BE play.  I'm sure we'll probably drop one or two outside of them, but I think they are the toughest game we have left.

Watson says hi.

Nate Watson was smothered by Marquette for about 75 of the 80 minutes.  Kuath and Oso do a pretty good job. What the give up in strength they make up for with athleticism in blocking shots.  Preventing bigs from scoring hasn't been the issue. Preventing teams from grabbing their own misses has been the issue.

I wonder how we'll do in the BET this year. Ever since we have been in the BE our track record for the tournament has been abysmal.

I really liked what I saw from O-Max Wednesday night.  He's another true X factor along with Kolek's scoring.  He is starting to slow down a bit and not force things in the half court.  We all know he is  quite capable of guarding multiple positions.  Personally, I'd like to see him.crash the offensive glass every so often..  GE has had a few off nights but he'll be fine. Again, the weaponry, leadership, and versatility of our roster is moving towards a formidable and imposing force.
