Notre Dame-Under Armour Deal Called Largest In College Sports

Notre Dame and Under Armour today formally announced a 10-year deal in which UA will design and supply footwear, apparel, training equipment and game-day uniforms for each of the school's men's and women's varsity sports teams (Under Armour). Officials "did not disclose financial terms" of the agreement. But Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick said, "By any measure, it is the largest deal of its kind in the history of collegiate athletics" (SOUTHBENDTRIBUNE.com, 1/21).

Sources said that the value of the deal is about $90M "both in cash and merchandise combined." Swarbrick noted that the agreement "could eventually be worth even more," as it "allows the school to take some of the cash the company owes the school in company stock" (ESPN.com, 1/21).

Under Armour makes great stuff. We wore their compression gear in the field. Makes sleeping in the cold a bit more bearable.

People here don't like Notre Dame but they are a power brand. Good move by both sides.

Correct, the 10-year $90 million deal tops the existing record of $10 years $82 million Adidas gave to Michigan.

However, ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted this:

@darrenrovell Notre Dame says they'll get more $ in product than any other school. Only qualifier? Nike likely gives Oregon more than they guarantee them

I think this is correct, Nike's support of Oregon, while not stated directly, exceeds anything any other school will ever get.

That said, ND is now #1 when going by stated deals ... until someone else tops this deal later this year.

As if there was any doubt, this further signifies Under Armour's place among the big boys.  They were originally kind of an edgy, outsider brand and signed teams with a similar identity, like Texas Tech.  Now they've become common place and have signed one of the most powerful, not to mention traditional, schools in the NCAA.  Remarkable brand story.

No one is happier than UCLA, Stanford, and/or Texas.  UA, Reebok, Adidas, Nike etc are more than welcome to come on down and look to break its NDs record.

Under Armour moved early to seed its gear in the military, especially in JSOC. It was great for their brand and we got next gen technology tactical gear for free.
