During the game, I looked up his record wondering how long he had been at ND and when he might retire, and was amazed that he is only 63 years old. I could have sworn that he was in his early 70s.

That was a fantastic press conference. As an MU fan, it gets no better. And BE marketing should take what he says and market it. That was fantastic.

Likable guy..didn't realize he was that affable and so laid back. Kind of refreshing, but not sure I'd love it if our coach was so laissez faire about a loss to a rival..

Really? If Marquette’s coach showed up like that ever. Win or loss. I’d want him gone. Pathetic. Could you imagine having a talented kid and thinking this is the guy I want to be my kids mentor. I sure as heck couldn’t.

Absolutely. You see experienced coaches do versions of this often. If the other team whups you, be gracious. It costs nothing. Then go back to work.
I would worry more about a coach with that resume' and experience throwing a tantrum over a non-conference game in December.

Tower summed it up perfectly. That is a coach that has earned his stripes, made a ton of money and can hold a presser like that. I wish more coaches were that candid.

I think overall they are pretty happy with where they are now. And if UConn were invited to the ACC, they'd leave too.

Just watched the entire presser. Brey was philosophical, accepted a big chunk of the blame and tried to take a self-deprecating, laughter-is-the-best-medicine approach. The guy has won a lot of basketball games, and, as lawdog said, he won 2 NCAAT games just 9 months ago -- including a double-digit win over Alabama. I'm also assuming this wasn't out of character for him, so his demeanor didn't especially surprise anyone who follows ND hoops. If he started swearing, ripping the players and throwing things, it would have been phony.

One thing Brey implied and said outright a couple times is that ND simply doesn’t have the athleticism to compete with teams like MU. That is directly on him.

I get the fans frustrations with Brey though. Since making the Elite 8 in back to back years in 2015 and 2016, they have been pretty mediocre overall. Last year was nice, but there doesn't seem to be anything resembling progress, especially if JJ Starling is one-and-done.

For perspective, Notre Dame has made 2 elite 8’s in the past 8 years. Marquette has made 2 elite 8’s in the past 45 years.
Football is what many there care about of course. But Notre Dame is good at a wide variety of Olympic sports. Eventually, if one sport doesn’t win enough they will make a change.
He’s gone from making the NCAA’s 70 plus percent of the time to 60% overall now. And that’s the low end of what they would likely accept there for basketball.
He’s well liked and well known as a nice guy with a good perspective which has also helped his longevity.

Either you forgot one of Marquette's or are intentionally framing this poorly. Marquette has made two Elite 8s in the last 20 seasons, one of which resulted in a Final Four. Yes ND has made two in the last 8, but they lost both.

ND has had more NCAA tourney appearances than MU in that time.
The stretch where MU had more NCAA appearances than ND going back many decades is when Crean made 4 of 6 and Buzz followed with 5 straight.
Overall results between the two schools have been very similar going back many decades.

Ive found I liked him substantially more since he stopped wearing the dark t-shirt/suit coat "Im the GM at a mid tier strip club" outfit. And grew a beard.

I didn't find anything about it? It was refreshing to hear him be honest about his team and the game they just played. Would have preferred more of that from monotone wojo back in the dark days instead of his scripted bullcrap
