A few good men saying announcement could becoming sooner rather than later on match ups.
-
Will MU fans get a chance to boo CTC in person instead of when they show his mug on the Titans video? What is Fred saying?

Thought it was supposed to come out this week (based on what I heard last week).

It would be fun....people could get their pitchforks out, light the torches....maybe Coach McCarthy would come...and Aaron Rodgers, too.
-
Has it been said if all 10 Big East teams will be playing? That would mean that 4 Big Ten teams are unable to play.
I would love to face any of the following:
Indiana
Maryland
Michigan
Michigan State
Illinois
Iowa
Purdue
Nebraska
Northwestern (Wojo v. Collins clash)
I would be less than thrilled having to face:
Penn State
Rutgers
Ohio State (seen enough of them)
I am assuming Wisconsin is already part of our schedule.

It is 8 games for (I believe) 8 seasons.

Do we know if current BE v B10 match ups like Marquette v Wisconsin or Seton Hall v Rutgers will be folded into this event or will those be kept separate?
-
MU Wisconsin will not be part of this event

Not even worth mentioning Minnesota, ai'nal?

Not even worth mentioning Minnesota, ai'nal?
They have a basketball team? ;D
-
Have they said anything about how scheduling is determined? Places in conference, television appeal, random? Just know it was said months ago that we had a home game. I suppose that's better than the Big East/SEC thing we entered into where we played UT on a "neutral" floor in Nashville.

Rothstein reported Nebraska @ Villanova is a matchup.

Going all out with marquee matchups out the gate, a'ina?

Concerns me that the B10 might not be using its marquee schools in this event. Back up for schools that have lower level ACC match ups?

Yeah if Nova vs. Nebraska is actually a match up that is not good news.
We need these to be marquee match ups.

Problem with that is if the BE cleans up the bottom feeders and the ACC takes care of the top, the B1G is in a world of hurt come March with that OOC record.

Total joke. What's the point? Our top teams against their garbage. Yippee.

If 8 Big East teams will be playing, two of the schools he listed at the bottom will still be included.

This isn't about Wild, the BOT, Cords, Dick Strong, Craig Kasten or Greg Borca, only TC. Please, stay on topic.
-
I know it will probably not work out the way we want, but in a perfect world which matchups would you want to see?
here are some of mine.
Georgetown vs. Maryland- There is a lot of bad blood between these teams, and they never play each other. They are huge recruiting rivals for DMV players and the game would be competitive and highly anticipated with 2 big names.
Marquette Vs. Indiana- Should both be strong next season, both big name programs, and I think there's another obvious reason. Needs to be played in MKE though
DePaul Vs. Northwestern- both weak teams, obviously close to each other, maybe DePaul could get a win?
Creighton Vs. Wisconsin- play a similar style, maybe Creighton could beat them at their own game
Villanova Vs. Michigan St.- Big name teams with big name coaches. They will both be really good next year.
Xavier Vs. Ohio St. - Would definitely be competitive, X could make a big statement knocking of the arrogant people at THE OSU.
Butler Vs. Michigan
St Johns Vs. Purdue
Seton Hall vs. Iowa
Providence Vs. Illinois
-

Exactly....BOT, Wild, Strong, Kasten (that's makes me laugh), Borca, didn't recruit Wade at all. Very much about TC and Wade. One doesn't exist without the other.
That would be a cool burn, to have the banners come down, lowered slowly. Then we could have Aaron Rodgers throw a lit football at them so they combust.....the place goes crazy. We bring out the old Milwaukee Mustang chicks on their Harleys to run over the smoldering ruins on the court, and then the MPD mounted horse units come in to take a whizz with the Hazmat team right after it do dispose of things properly.
What a burn. Who's going to develop the songs and cheers over the next number of months if the matchup happens? Hell, even if it doesn't, this should be a go project in the event it ever does happen. You can never be prepped enough I always say.

If you don't feel like reading here is a summary.
8 games a year for 8 years
Big East home games on FS1, Big Ten on ESPN (4 each per year)
Games played at teams regular arenas
2 games on Tuesday-Friday
Big East teams will appear a minimum of 6 times (4 teams will play 7 times)
Big 10 team will appear a minimum of 4 times (8 teams will play 5 times)

I'm here to help. How can I help get the process started, the songs written, the chants learned and distributed, the pyrotechnics, etc. Let's knock this out of the park. Think big. He should leave that arena knowing he did nothing, was not valued at all, and all of this would have happened regardless. It is key that we really knock this out of the park and leave it crystal clear for everyone to understand.

I dont believe the badgers will be involved in this this year. The season starts for them on Nov. 13, and the Big East games are supposed to be played from Nov. 17-20. The Badgers have their first game at MSG on the 20th, so you can rule that day out as well as the 19th because it wouldn't make sense to play on consecutive days. The 2K Classic comes with two home games, which I assume would be their first two games of the regular season. The opener would probably be the 13th or 14th with the second game a couple days later. The only way I could see this work would be if they play a road game on the 18th on the way out to New York, maybe play someone like Villanova or St. John's.

Depaul would get wrecked by Northwestern. Not quite there yet but Northwestern is a tourney team in 2016-17. McIntosh is a stud and Vic Law and Scottie Lindsey are developing nicely.

I have heard that for the last 8 years.

I have heard that for the last 8 years.
Nah, the only time any Northwestern fan truly believed that was the year with Crawford, Thompson, and Shurna. That being said, even if NU isnt a tourney team they have more than enough talent to stomp Depaul. McIntosh would be the perfect fit at PG for next years Marquette team. Hes really fun to watch and can shoot really well and has a ridiculous floater.

I wouldn't mind seeing MU get a game with Northwestern. They'll be good, but a more winnable game than IU would be.

As I said.

Eh Georgetown is in that same tournament and we plan on playing in the Gavitt games. The 2K classic games don't both have to be before the actual tournament since it's not a real tournament like the NIT.

Do you know if you guys will definitely have a Gavitt game this year though? Two teams will be left out from our league, haven't heard which two yet though.

Would be happy with games against any Big Ten team. Rutgers would be least preferred, but a road game in metro NY never hurts.
Would love to see a home and home with Michigan State.

Georgetown is in the 2k tournament at MSG, so they are out this year.

Plural? I think you already bought the GAS banner, no?
I say we take down the George Thompson jersey instead from the rafters and let "Tip" spin him around a few times on the handle of the Broom Lady's work utensil.

Georgetown is in the 2k tournament at MSG, so they are out this year.
Nope not the case at all.
Allegedly the 2 teams out are Creighton and Seton Hall.
Seton Hall and Butler both play in tournaments starting Thursday. If the logic is Georgetown and Wisconsin can't play because they play on Friday then it would follow Seton Hall and Butler can't play either. But obviously some of those teams are playing.
And Yes I do know Georgetown is playing as JT3 has referred to us playing in it numerous times.

I think most likely the two teams that won't play are Butler and Seton Hall. It was never reported that Georgetown would not play in the Gavitt games. Likely Georgetown will play on The first day of the challenge.

uh oh. With Nova gone the bus trips available to Rutgers would be: St. John's, Providence, and Georgetown.
Hopefully it's one of the first two for my sake I would be super pissed if we had to play Rutgers
-
According to Rothstein, St. John's will host Rutgers.
https://twitter.com/jonrothstein

Somewhat underwhelming so far:
Nebraska at Villanova
Xavier at Michigan
Rutgers at St John's
My guess is that Northwestern, Penn State, Iowa, and Minnesota will be involved too, at this rate.
-
Phew Georgetown dodged a bullet.
-
Phew Georgetown dodged a bullet.
At this rate, what would draw the least interest?
Penn State @ Marquette
Iowa @ Butler
Georgetown @ Minnesota
Creighton @ Northwestern
Providence @ Illinois
Add those to the current games and this whole thing would have a massive "who cares" surrounding it.

Rothstein reporting Creighton at Indiana.
Yawn.

The slow leak of uninspiring games is a bit odd. I can only assume matchups are being determined by the draw of a hat.

You are right about that. These should be juggled up:
Minnesota or Iowa against MU or MU and Indiana or MU and MSU
Penn State against Georgetown
Butler against Illinois
Creighton against Nebraska
Much better matchups could be found. MSU and Villanova, etc.

Can DePaul get any more Stoopid? Now that Northwestern is on the rise, they decide to play them every year to prove conclusively that they are no longer the best Division I basketball team in Chicago. (Ok, Chicago area)
-
According to Rothstein, St. John's will host Rutgers.
https://twitter.com/jonrothstein
I'm just gonna come right out and fearlessly predict that the winner of this game will score at least 30 points.

So they're obviously intentionally passing up all the common sense matchups, what's the reason why?
-
So they're obviously intentionally passing up all the common sense matchups, what's the reason why?
A few possibilities I see...
.
- Big 10 doesn't want their state schools embarrassed by local private schools (MD/GT, XU/OSU, Creighton/Iowa)
- Big 10 is saving their best teams to play in the ACC Challenge (long term makes no sense, everyone will play in this eventually)
- ESPN is trying to keep the best Big 10 teams from playing on FS1.
- Big 10 didn't realize how good our league was until they started setting up games.
.
My biggest issue is that this should be the year with the best matchups. Kick it off in style and give the public some games that will actually generate interest. That doesn't mean all tourney teams, but there are plenty of good games with non-tourney teams that could be arranged. DePaul/Illinois would be a great example.
Honestly, this sure doesn't feel like a "Tip-off Classic" worthy of carrying Dave Gavitt's name thus far.
-
I knew that former Buckeye Stu Jackson couldn't be trusted!
He's trying to screw us!
-
So they're obviously intentionally passing up all the common sense matchups, what's the reason why?
What are the common-sense matchups? Indiana-MU? Georgetown-Maryland? Because a lot of the local ones already happen on a regular, if not yearly, basis (Wiscy-MU, Butler-Indiana, Nebraska-Creighton, Seton Hall-Rutgers).
We're not going to play the same matchups very year , so except for whenever we have to play Rutgers or Penn St....none of these are all that surprising. Villanova getting a better team would've been nice but Creighton-Indiana, Xavier-Michigan, and Illinois-Providence all sound like solid matchups.

They already play the Huskers every year, making Iowa their nearest potential local rival.

I know I'd like to see Marquette play Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Iowa. A solid private Midwestern team that looks to be on the rise again vs. large Midwestern public schools that have had some success over the years. Wouldn't mind Northwestern, either.

Let's play 'em in Evanston and avenge that loss from 1986! (I was there) It would also be a chance to even our all-time record against them which is currently 15-14 for Northwestern.

2014-15 Big Ten Standings (Bolded teams confirmed in Gavitt)

8) Illinois
9) Michigan
10) Minnesota
11) Northwestern

Yawn.
Should be a quality game.
Xavier vs Michigan as well. I expect other solid games.
Not sure what people want here. I don't see some of these matchups any less entertaining than Iowa vs Wake Forest or Purdue vs Clemson, etc, etc in the ACC Big Ten challenge

5 of the bottom 8 teams confirmed. Maybe including some of their top half teams. Thus far there are none. Stop trying to put lipstick on what is so far a pretty ugly pig.
-
The Villanova/Nebraska game is criminal. I wasn't expecting Maryland but give Nova MSU, OSU, Wisconsin, or anybody else of relevance. Some of the other matchups are ok but Nova getting Nebraska is laughable.
-
All this confirms is that the Big10 has a lot of crappy teams that no one wants to play.
-

Nebraska was a NCAA team last year, are the permanently going to be in the bottom? Michigan was in the Final Four last year, that's one of those bottom 8 teams you reference. Indiana might be top 15 next year if Yogi Ferrell comes back...that's part of the bottom 8 you reference.
Sorry, I'm not sure what this past year's finish means for the upcoming season, I just don't see it. That's not putting lipstick on anything, that's looking at what next year should bring.

Regarding Nebraska, the outlook does seem rather bleak. From Omaha.com:
"Leading scorer and two-time All-Big Ten selection Terran Petteway said last week he will give up his senior season and declare for the NBA draft. Forward Walter Pitchford, a two-year starter, also is leaving a year early to turn pro. Guard Tarin Smith, who averaged 17 minutes a game as a true freshman, is transferring.
Nebraska has signed five incoming freshmen for 2015-16, while junior transfer Andrew White III will become eligible.
Two scholarships remain open for the Huskers, whose only player taller than 6-foot-7 is rising 6-10 sophomore Jake Hammond, who played just 36 minutes and scored three points last season."
Andrew White III, a transfer from Kansas who got tired of being recruited over was the Virginia High School Player of the Year and a top-50 recruit in the class of 2012 (#48 ESPN, #51 Rivals). He should be effective for them although without Petteway and Pitchford, opposing teams can concentrate on stopping him.

I suppose Iowa isn't a bad draw for us. Somewhat local, while they lose two starters, they return a pretty solid compliment of players. Most likely will be in the mix for a bid next year.
Georgetown/Maryland is obviously the headliner. All things considered, really the only headline game. No other game matches two teams that were both top-half finishers a year ago.

Iowa is middle of the pack Big Ten next year. Losing White really hurst.
Could be better, could be worse in terms of draws.

Are the last three matchups at a neutral site or something?

We just don't know where they are yet. 2 of the 3 will be @ the B10 team's site the other will be @ the BE team's. I expect Georgetown to be @ Maryland so you have a 50/50 shot for a home game.

Outside of the travesty that is Nebraska vs Nova not too bad of a slate. Really wish it could have been Michigan State, Wisconsin, or Ohio St instead. Only one headliner but 4 solid games and couple bad vs bad matchups, which is to be expected.

MU is hosting.
-
Thank heavens we didn't get Rutgers.
-
Good for MU. Didn't want Rutgers. Didn't want Penn State. Tired of Ohio State. Already play Wisconsin. I like it. Something different.
-
Is it a stretch to see the Big East winning 5 of the 8 games? I'm predicting that Maryland, Michigan and Indiana take care of business.

On November 19th.

I was really hoping for Purdue. They're going to be solid next season and playing either here or there the atmosphere is excellent and both arenas are great on TV. I'm pretty disappointed but that's life.

Iowa is a good one especially at home for next year.
Def beatable but still a tough team. Utoff is a goofy lookin dude but can ball.
Our team is still a big ? So getting a solid but not great team at home is nice.
Winnable but not a joke

BOOooooOooooooooOOOOoooooooOOOOoooo
-
During my four years at MU we played Iowa twice and went 0-2 in those games, so a victory against them next year would be extra sweet.

Nope those should be the only 3 games they're favored in, so 5/8 should be the minimum for the BE.
I'm predicting a 7/8 win for the BE.

This is a terrible lineup for FS1.
Nebraska at Villanova
Illinois at Providence
Rutgers at St John's
Iowa at Marquette
The Big 10 had seven tourney teams last year, only one will play on FS1, and against the 9th place team in our league. Yes, we have higher hopes, but this is still a ninth place team in a ten team league that lost three starters. And that's the marquee game on FS1.
-
The matchups aren't as bad as I originally thought. Of the 8 B1G teams the Big East plays this year, three of those teams were in the top seven (Maryland, Iowa, Purdue) and the other five were in the bottom seven (Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers). Michigan and Illinois, while finishing in the bottom half last year, are still high quality programs. Michigan made the Elite Eight just a season ago.
I would have much rather preferred taking teams 4-11, in order to avoid the bottom three teams (Nebraska, Penn State Rutgers) from the B1G. Under that scenario, while we still would not have played Wisconsin, Maryland or Michigan State, we would have then been able to face Purdue, Ohio State, Minnesota and Northwestern instead. You sacrifice not playing the top-3 teams by not playing the bottom-3 teams.

Whatever. I'm done worrying about what's good for FS1. I'm just going to focus on MU...and I like the Iowa game.

All four are state schools from the B1G on FS1. Nebraska finished in the top 10 in attendance and have two top 100's coming in.
It's only year one. Wish FS1 could've landed a higher profile Big Ten school.

MU should be gelling early due to the Italy trip, so hopefully that gives us an early season edge.

Agreed. A lot of complaining about something that is in year one of an eight year agreement. People were posting every marquee match up possible and then complaining when it doesn't happen.
Iowa will be a fun game too.

The way it is setup is that every from the Big 10 will appear at least 4 times. This pretty much assures that the 6 teams left out this year will be in next year. But the college game swings so quickly who knows who will actually be good/bad from year to year.
Since this was put together this year and a lot of scheduling is don years in advance it was probably hard in year one to get room on some schools schedules. Now they can plan ahead but still have to make sure all schools get their chances.

I think this is a solid set of match ups the first year. Big East has the ability to win every game. Would be nice to come out of it 5-3 or 6-2. Iowa a very good pick for us and will likely sell out the BC as they travel well.

Are people thinking that Creighton is going to be good next year? I have no idea and don't follow other teams much. But based upon last year and their recruiting, I just don't see them beating Indiana as Indiana should be pretty good. Marquette should not be favored against Iowa at this point. DePaul and Penn State a toss up, and maybe the same with Rutgers/St. Johns, although St. Johns could be pretty good. Maryland should be favored over GT.

Creighton will be interesting next year. They are adding two transfers and a top-100 redshirt that didn't play this past year. Maurice Watson, who transferred in from Boston University, is very good. Like he had NBA scouts watching him before he transferred to a bigger conference good. They also add Nevada transfer Cole Huff, a 6'8" athletic big that averaged 12.4 ppg/5.4 rpg while shooting over 40% from three. Ronnie Harrell will be the redshirt, supposed to be an excellent player.
Creighton lost games that they led in the final minute six times this year. That's crazy. Those three, along with Zierden and Hegner is a solid foundation. Will probably depend on how fast they gel, but at least their fans expect them to be significantly better than last year.

According to SI.com, G'Town and Maryland are going to play each other in back to back years in the Gavitt Tipoff....
http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2015/04/21/maryland-georgetown-series-gavitt-games-rivalry
"In 2015-16, the teams will meet at Xfinity Center in College Park, Md., as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games between the Big East and Big Ten. The Terps and Hoyas will then play in 2016-17 at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., for the same event, according to the Washington Post."
