So they're obviously intentionally passing up all the common sense matchups, what's the reason why?

What are the common-sense matchups? Indiana-MU? Georgetown-Maryland? Because a lot of the local ones already happen on a regular, if not yearly, basis (Wiscy-MU, Butler-Indiana, Nebraska-Creighton, Seton Hall-Rutgers).

We're not going to play the same matchups very year , so except for whenever we have to play Rutgers or Penn St....none of these are all that surprising. Villanova getting a better team would've been nice but Creighton-Indiana, Xavier-Michigan, and Illinois-Providence all sound like solid matchups.

A few possibilities I see...
.
  • Big 10 doesn't want their state schools embarrassed by local private schools (MD/GT, XU/OSU, Creighton/Iowa)
  • Big 10 is saving their best teams to play in the ACC Challenge (long term makes no sense, everyone will play in this eventually)
  • ESPN is trying to keep the best Big 10 teams from playing on FS1.
  • Big 10 didn't realize how good our league was until they started setting up games.
.
My biggest issue is that this should be the year with the best matchups. Kick it off in style and give the public some games that will actually generate interest. That doesn't mean all tourney teams, but there are plenty of good games with non-tourney teams that could be arranged. DePaul/Illinois would be a great example.

Honestly, this sure doesn't feel like a "Tip-off Classic" worthy of carrying Dave Gavitt's name thus far.

Creighton is in Nebraska

They already play the Huskers every year, making Iowa their nearest potential local rival.

I know I'd like to see Marquette play Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Iowa. A solid private Midwestern team that looks to be on the rise again vs. large Midwestern public schools that have had some success over the years. Wouldn't mind Northwestern, either.

Former Buckeye???

He did coach at Wisconsin for two years, but I don't know of any Buckeye connection.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Let's play 'em in Evanston and avenge that loss from 1986!  (I was there)  It would also be a chance to even our all-time record against them which is currently 15-14 for Northwestern.

Rothstein reporting Creighton at Indiana.

Yawn.

Should be a quality game.

Xavier vs Michigan as well.  I expect other solid games.

Not sure what people want here.  I don't see some of these matchups any less entertaining than Iowa vs Wake Forest or Purdue vs Clemson, etc, etc in the ACC Big Ten challenge

5 of the bottom 8 teams confirmed. Maybe including some of their top half teams. Thus far there are none. Stop trying to put lipstick on what is so far a pretty ugly pig.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

The Villanova/Nebraska game is criminal.  I wasn't expecting Maryland but give Nova MSU, OSU, Wisconsin, or anybody else of relevance.  Some of the other matchups are ok but Nova getting Nebraska is laughable.

forgetful

All this confirms is that the Big10 has a lot of crappy teams that no one wants to play.

Nebraska was a NCAA team last year, are the permanently going to be in the bottom?   Michigan was in the Final Four last year, that's one of those bottom 8 teams you reference.  Indiana might be top 15 next year if Yogi Ferrell comes back...that's part of the bottom 8 you reference.

Sorry, I'm not sure what this past year's finish means for the upcoming season, I just don't see it.  That's not putting lipstick on anything, that's looking at what next year should bring.

Regarding Nebraska, the outlook does seem rather bleak.  From Omaha.com:

"Leading scorer and two-time All-Big Ten selection Terran Petteway said last week he will give up his senior season and declare for the NBA draft. Forward Walter Pitchford, a two-year starter, also is leaving a year early to turn pro. Guard Tarin Smith, who averaged 17 minutes a game as a true freshman, is transferring.

Nebraska has signed five incoming freshmen for 2015-16, while junior transfer Andrew White III will become eligible.

Two scholarships remain open for the Huskers, whose only player taller than 6-foot-7 is rising 6-10 sophomore Jake Hammond, who played just 36 minutes and scored three points last season."

Andrew White III, a transfer from Kansas who got tired of being recruited over was the Virginia High School Player of the Year and a top-50 recruit in the class of 2012 (#48 ESPN, #51 Rivals).  He should be effective for them although without Petteway and Pitchford, opposing teams can concentrate on stopping him.

All the matchups...

Xavier @ Michigan
Creighton @ Ind
Rutgers @ St. John's
Ill @ Prov
Neb @ Nova
Penn St vs DePaul
Iowa vs Marquette
G'town vs MD

brewcity77

I suppose Iowa isn't a bad draw for us. Somewhat local, while they lose two starters, they return a pretty solid compliment of players. Most likely will be in the mix for a bid next year.

Georgetown/Maryland is obviously the headliner. All things considered, really the only headline game. No other game matches two teams that were both top-half finishers a year ago.

RushmoreAcademy

Iowa is middle of the pack Big Ten next year.  Losing White really hurst.
Could be better, could be worse in terms of draws.

We just don't know where they are yet. 2 of the 3 will be @ the B10 team's site the other will be @ the BE team's. I expect Georgetown to be @ Maryland so you have a 50/50 shot for a home game.

Outside of the travesty that is Nebraska vs Nova not too bad of a slate.  Really wish it could have been Michigan State, Wisconsin, or Ohio St instead.  Only one headliner but 4 solid games and couple bad vs bad matchups, which is to be expected.

Good for MU. Didn't want Rutgers. Didn't want Penn State. Tired of Ohio State. Already play Wisconsin. I like it. Something different.
