David Staniford

David Staniford begins his fourth season as Marquette's head men's tennis coach. In his three years at the helm of the Golden Eagles, his teams have compiled an impressive dual match record with individual conference championships at No. 1 singles. Last season, MU was 14-8, including a home court record of 8-0. The team upset Wisconsin for the second consecutive season and also posted a win over Iowa. Staniford's players also were victorious over impressive regional teams such as Hawaii, Boston College, Indiana State and Northern Illinois. Marquette was ranked 11th in the region in a final season midwest poll, the highest in Marquette history. His 11-year overall career record is 150-126.

Staniford came to Marquette from Illinois State where he was the head men's tennis coach for eight seasons. During that time the Redbirds compiled a 106-104 record. In addition to those duties, Staniford was head coach of the ISU women's tennis team from 1985-90.

Staniford has coached extensively in several countries. Over the past 25 years he has coached many outstanding juniors in Australia, Canada, Oregon, Illinois, Florida and Wisconsin. Several of his players from the past have gone on to state, national and international honors. One former player, Carl Limberger, went on to be ranked in the top 100 players in the world. Jorge Gonzalez, whom he coached at Marquette, is now on the ATP Tour and is a member of Puerto Rico's Davis Cup team.

An outstanding junior player in his native Australia in the late 1960s, Staniford went on to play #1 singles at the University of Oregon. In Australia, he was coached by legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman. In the early 1970s he played in numerous tournaments on the world circuit, including several Grand Slams, while continuing with graduate school.

Staniford continues to play in national USTA tournaments and has been ranked No. 1 in the 35 and 45 divisions in central Illinois, including ranking No. 1 in the region. He was the third-ranked men's 35 player in Canada in 1982 and was a doubles finalist at the 1983 Canadian national tournament.

Staniford holds three degrees from the University of Oregon. He earned a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1970. Staniford received a master's degree in physical education and recreation from Oregon in 1970. A former Rotary International Graduate Fellowship recipient, he went on to earn a doctorate degree in physical education and leisure studies in 1975. He has also studied at the University of Sydney and the University of London. His studies have allowed him to become an expert in movement analysis and biomechanics. He has authored many articles and several books including Natural Movement for Children, and his latest work, Natural Tennis.

Staniford regularly conducts local, national and international clinics. In addition, he conducts corporate clinics and outings and follows several of his former players on the ATP Tour.
