McClone became a prominent prep basketball coach in Wisconsin. From 1951 to 1961, he led St. Mary's High School in Menasha to 10 straight Catholic School State Basketball tournament appearances - winning the state titles in 1953, 1955, and 1960.

One of his St. Mary's players, James Karsten, would go on to play basketball at Marquette.
