Pat began his high school career at Bayside in Queens, New York. After three years at Bayside, Hazel transferred to Blair Academy and was reclassified as a junior in 2005. During his first year at Blair, he played against current teammate David Cubillan from Saint Benedict's in the New Jersey Prep A Title game. Saint Benedict's won, 74-59, as Cubillan scored 17 and Hazel had 8. Pat averaged eight points and eight rebounds during his junior season.
Hazel averaged 11 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior, starting every game and helping the team to a 19-8 overall record. He shot 47% from the field and was ranked the 56th-best fifth-year prospect by HoopScoopOnline.com. He netted eight points in the Jordan Brand Regional Game at Madison Square Garden following his senior year.
In September 2006, he chose Marquette over Hofstra, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Patrick entered Marquette as one of four recruits in the 2007-08 freshman class. The others are Trevor Mbakwe and Scott Christopherson.
Patrick is the son of Lance Sr. and Wanda Hazel. His father played basketball at York College and his brother, Lance Jr., played at Queens College. He is a communications major. Current Milwaukee Buck Charlie Villanueva is also a Blair graduate.
