Texas Style Barbeque Draws Nearly 2,000 Fans

A picture-perfect evening on the campus of Marquette University provided an ideal setting for a Texas Style Barbeque, hosted by men's basketball coach Buzz Williams, Wednesday night and approximately 2,000 fans took advantage of the opportunity.

The event featured a catered meal courtesy of Famous Dave's, games for the kids and a mechanical bull for those up to the challenge. Several current Golden Eagles were persuaded to see how long they could stay on the bull, including junior guard Maurice Acker (turned 21 on Wednesday).

If Buzz Williams didn't meet everyone in attendance Wednesday night, he came very close as he balanced introductions with the fans and interviews with the media. The Texas native took full advantage of the late-June opportunity, signing anything and everything put in front of him.

Each of the 10 returning members of the squad were also on hand for the festivities and each was introduced, along with the new staff, during a short presentation by Williams.

Williams and his staff have been focused on the program's summer camps each of the past two weeks, with the July recruiting period right around the corner. One more summer camp for kids (K5-8th graders only) is scheduled for July 14-18 and space is still available.

BuzzBQ Review

Written by: noreply@blogger.com (mu_hilltopper)

My wife, 2 year old son, and 10 day old son made the trek down to Marquette for the 1st Annual BuzzBQ.

Great show by Marquette, as usual. Perfect night for it. Well attended. Bumped in to the usual internet suspects. The Rice family shared their table with us, and texted their son that one of the Cracked Sidewalks team was eating with them, thinking he'd be really impressed. The return text message suggested I should get a life. Harrumph. Where's the love?

Buzz and the team were out in force, signing autographs, mingling with the crowd. The local ESPN Radio team was there, interviewing players.

I made sure to bump in to Mo Acker, to wish him a happy birthday.

Great event, one they should consider doing every year.

Here are a few snapshots from the affair:

DISCLAIMER-My husband who could not attend asked that I make it known that he did not take these pics.  These are my amateurish attempt.  It's the effort that counts.

This is my first time trying to post pics so if this doesn't work, I apologize in advance.

Nice pics!  I was there too, and it was fun.  Glad I went and met the team up close - they are pretty tall up close LOL!

It was great fun, and Buzz mentioned next year's event!  Sounds like they will do it again - weather was perfect, great food and the athletes, staff and Buzz were first-class all the way.

Great day for Marquette faithful!

I didn't get a chance to attend, but I have to tell you how impressed I have been with our BBall players since Crean took over.  I am sure that they would rather be doing something else, but they are nice, respectful, and willing to put up with fans (an our kids) and give of their time.

Hopefully Buzz will keep that up.

+1, TC always recruited some great kids.

Last night was a great night.  Hopefully it becomes an annual deal.

It was Maurice's birthday the day of the BBQ and Buzz led the crowd in a round of Happy Birthday to Mo.  I think Mo said he was 21??
